(Abc.net.au) Interesting Police will keep an eye on the convoy of a bikie gang travelling from Sydney to Canberra to attend a tattoo show and the funeral of a gang member. Does anyone else think "bikie" sounds less sinister that "biker"?   (abc.net.au) divider line 64

Spongebob would join a bikie gang.

In America, we're called "bikers". Get that straight. B-I-K-E-R-S. Bikers.

robmilmel [TotalFark] 2009-03-28 10:31:39 PM
Bikie sounds like that old English gang (mods or rockers? Don't really remember) that rode scooters.
Hell, most Angels could have killed a group of them just with BO alone.

"Bikie" conjures up images of training wheels.

My four year old has a bikie.

The alcoholic neighbor down the street is a biker.

You'ld prolly get your ass kicked if you called a Hell's Angels member a "bikie"...unless, I suppose, you were an fellow HA from Australia.

kmmontandon [TotalFark] 2009-03-28 10:39:08 PM
Considering that the vast majority of "bikers" these days are yuppies & post-retirement boomers desperately trying to buy their way into a lifestyle, I don't find either term threatening.

No doubt. You wouldn't believe how many doctors, lawyers, and execs are at your average bike rally.

The Toecutter - he knows who I am. I am the Nightrider! I am the chosen one. The mighty hand of vengeance, sent down to strike the unroadworthy! I'm hotter than a rollin' dice. Step right up, germ, and watch the kid lay down the rubber road, ride to freedom!

My nephews rode their bikies after they graduated from their trikies. They gonna get on their horsies next and play with dollies?

That's so gay, all they need is a purple bus and Hugo Weaving.

They're not going to a tattoo show either. It's a "body art exposition". And it's not a gang, it's a "social club".

Damn, I was just thinking skit of that the day before yesterday! "Gangs of old ladies, fed up with society's view of them..."

Some day, I gotta see if Amazon has a decent price on a Monty Python box set.

Sorry.

Also, bikie sounds like they would use curse words like "Doody-head" and "Poo-poo".

They see me rollin', they be hatin'! That is how the life a bikie is...

Don't fall in love with me, my panties are already promised to my mates, and there is nothing you can do to change that.

(However, if you can teach me to chain stitch so that I can make doilies, I will soon be the envy of every Hells Angel in the land, and I will come back for you)

"Bikies" sound so gay! Dirtbags has an international tone, and is easily understood

Short i it is. Australians tend to think that their colourful use of language makes them cuties.

Man, I just knew this was gonna be Australian slang. Except for the British rhyming stuff, Australian slang is the strangest slang in English. I had an Australian Japanese teacher in high school, and, man, she said the silliest things.

Nnnnnnnnnno, she was a white lady, descended directly from Irish debtors and thieves. She was well over six feet tall, her hair was a bleached sort of white blonde, she had a broad, flat face and large teeth. Her arms were flabby. She was monstrous, just a big, tough looking lady.

I almost broke her knee with a cricket ball one time.

Ikimasen 2009-03-29 12:52:48 AM
I guess that fact that it was going from Sydney to Canberra would give it away too. I... skimmed the headline.

She, of course, was the replacement for the black American Japanese teacher I'd had previously, who had a stutter and Crohn's Disease. Who once sat on a jury for a street corner shooting and told us the story without mentioning guns, instead employing a complicated gardening metaphor (instead of teaching Japanese).

But at least he didn't say 'cheesed off.'

Ernest101au 2009-03-29 01:12:20 AM
A biker is just some guy on a (motor)bike. You can be a biker and wear pink lycra. A bikie rides usually rides a Harley and deals in speed, weed and hookers. A bikie in pink lycra just had a strippers G-String thrown at him. Why the hell don't American bikies give a sh#t about sharing their names with all other two wheeled road enthusiasts? Hence the distinction, you pink lycra wearing, english language mangling, breathtakingly ignorant vaginal belches.

Long i. Same as biker but change the last syllable.

Forget what I posted above. (Sgygus is a dumbass sometimes) I was thinking about the second syllable.

Australians put ie on the end of many words.

Trucker - Truckie
Carpenter - Chippie
Builder - Brickie
Breakfast - Brekkie

All I can think of off the top of my head. The word Bikie was funny when I first got here, but the gangs down here are brutal. I wouldn't giggle too much if you ever met one.

torch [TotalFark] 2009-03-29 01:35:48 AM
The Aussies have it all wrong. Bikies are people who ride bicycles. Bikers ride hawgs, yo.
