From TFA

Obviously Alaskan lawmakers aren't willing to subsidize Palin's political aspirations.

I'm sure Sarah Palin has no problem with Alaska accepting all the Federal money they can get just so long as she can say she said "thanks but no thanks" when it's time for her presidential campaign.

Palin/Limbaugh 2012

Has the State of Alaska paid back the Feds for building the pipeline yet, which yields so much $ for Alaska that residents don't pay taxes but actually GET a check from the state for the royalties?

Sarah Palin is stupid and dumb and stuff.

If you had put Palin/Jindal 2012, I might have actually believed you weren't trolling.

Quite a few Farkers - myself included - predicted that this is exactly what would happen. Though to be fair it was about as tough as predicting the sun will rise tomorrow.

I believe a grand total of three governors have refused part of the stimulus;
they are all Republicans and they all have designs on running for President in 2012...

...but there's no connection, and you'd be a fool and a Communist to make one.

That would be too good to be true for the Democrats.

Let's hold off on that sentiment for 18 months or so. If the economy, or Afghanistan, or Iraq, or Iran, or something else, goes pear shaped, Palin/Jindal might look more appealing. At which point the Maya will look down from Maya heaven and say "December 21, 2012. Warned you. You still voted for Dumb and Dumber."

dj_bigbird: but actually GET a check from the state for the royalties?

No, we do not get a check from the state for the royalties. We get a check from an investment corporation from investments made with 25% of the royalties. You'll want to check out the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation (new window)for more information.

The big problem with that being that the next day she said, "I never said that."

Palin's complaints about the stimulus

Unfortunately, a disproportionate percentage of the federal package available to Alaska would increase government operations. It's a stretch to certify that more spending on more bureaucracy actually grows an economy.

Yeah, she'll be 48 three years from now. I don't think she's gonna age very well over the next 3 and a half years.

Has your state paid the feds back for all of the roads and infrastructure in the 40s and 50s that you all benefit from? That happened in the lower 48 before Alaska was a state. Its our turn. Besides, you should really live in a state where the people have ownership in the natural resources, not the government.

Not to mention the boat load of taxes the feds get from the pipe line. They've more than made their money back.

She reads like the Phillipines call center girl I had the misfortune of getting when I tried to talk to my bank. "Well, sir, the balance item does reflect the charges that were processed when the card was run for 337.13 four times."

She's obviously posturing to further her political ambitions, knowing full well that Alaska will still get the money.

That requires the executive to sign off on it (at least in every state I am aware of). That's what I find interesting. Can the federal government say that the state legislature can pass a bill without approval (or veto override) of the state executive, even if that is a violation of the state's constitution?

Alaska is a net recipient of federal tax dollars, not a net payer. So basically, this money is being taken away from other state's taxpayers to be given to Alaska.

That pipeline hasn't been built. And when it does get built, it will be built by Canadians under a sweetheart deal. Palin sold her state down the river for the sake of political expediency.

As a Canadian in the oilpatch, we thank Governor Palin for her awesome generosity. I'm not sure that you should, though.

Then explain that check I mailed to the IRS this week. What the hell was that? A gift?

I'm sorry you all are so damned butthurt over an issue that none of you gave a wet shiat about before Sarah Palin was picked for the VP slot. But having to help subsidize Alaska is part of the price you pay when the Fed and environmental groups locked most of the state away from development. We've got enough natural resources up here to make us financially independent. But we can't get at them because the Powers That Be decided they wanted to save the trees up here because the rest of you lot had already cut yours down without a concern for the consequences.

I believe dj_bigbird was referring to the oil pipeline, not the natural gas pipeline. The oil pipeline has been there for over 30 years. dj_bigbird is also mistaken about how the Permanent Fund Dividend works.
