Hey, all I ever wanted to do was not to be a giant disappointment to my parents, and in 30 years I haven't managed that.

You're pissed about the guitar? GTFO.

There was a period in time where Jeff went somewhere no one else did... his whole catalog is awesome but there was a 5 year span where he just transcended music

And yet you still prove yourself.....
Sorry, I fail to see the problem ....

My favorite Jeff Beck solo is from Roger Waters' What God Wants, Part 3

Link (new window)

Waters also got some truly godly playing from Clapton on Sexual Revolution:

Constipated Duck showed me the ways of Mr. Beck.

Man, Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice" sound really comes through on that one.

/Now you can't listen to the link without seeing Crockett & Tubbs speeding across Biscayne Bay in their Scarab, can you?

Agreed. His tone and feel are unmistakably his own - truly one of the greatest guitar players of all time. And Simon Phillips = win.

Jan Hammer gives new meaning to the term "noodling." Only Ray Manzarek was worse. I've always been convinced that Beck chose him for "Wired" because he knew he couldn't top "Blow by Blow" so he figured he'd just get a keyboardist who specialized in throwaway riffs and pointless solos. That way, when the critics complained, he could blame it on Hammer.

For all his ferocity, Beck can surprise you with something like "Suspension" from "You Had It Coming" to let you know he still has the touch.

I was lucky enough to see the Jeff Beck Group when Rod Stewart was singing. Stewart kept his back to the audience most of the time, but the music and the interaction among the musicians on stage was spellbinding. It's sad how many of todays stars have not mastered their craft and rely on electronic wizardry to produce a sound instead of musical ability.

At least you're not 65 (I assume)..which Beck will be in June.

/so, at least you got that going for you

Jeff Beck on GEE-tar + Jan Hammer on KEY-tar=WIN

I liked Jeff Beck a lot, 30 years ago. But that clip looks like the basis of SpongeBob's halftime show episode.

I know I'm being critical, and nobody wants to hear it, but this song seriously sounds like something taken from the cartoons I listened to growing up. It doesn't seem like anything out of the ordinary or special.

I want to make a few points:
1. Jam Hammer's keyboard [loop] sound sounds a lot like late 70's / early 80's tangerine dream keyboard loops. [wasn't he in the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the early 70's? "the innermounting flame" is an awesome album.

2. I'm not a big fan of Jeff Beck, but like a poster above, I really like his work on "Amused to Death" album by Waters.

3. Simon Phillips is an awesome drummer. I only know him from his work with 801 [801 Live 1976], [and possibly Mike Oldfield?? dunno].
For some reason I find his drumming style and Terry Bozzio's style very similar... i get the two confused sometimes lol.

(shrug) It's definitely a product of its time, and many of the sounds used in it are dated. I don't think that's necessarily bad, it's just a fact of the time it was produced.

That said, it's not so much that anyone overly admires the composition, which is pretty standard 70s fusion. It's Beck's sublime guitar playing that always merits attention.

Has any major star done less with or had less regard for their talent than Jeff Beck?

He seems to hold his skill in such distain(sp?) that it's as if he
would rather be known for restoring old MGs than for his great guitar playing.

And I, too, think he is much better than Clapton.

Jeff Beck is one of the greats. I saw him a few years ago when he toured with BB King. Quite a show.

Here he is 2 years ago doing a fine cover of "A Day in the Life" with that little honey Tal Wilkenfeld on bass (new window)

jeff beck is awesome on records but 9 out of 10 times live hes either awful or mediocre like on this video. for someone everyone raves about being so tasteful, hes usually really tasteLESS live. ive got a bootleg from 81 that hes really good on, but thats the only one ive heard.

Beck hasn't played with a pick since "Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop".

Wicked, wicked playing - must see live.

/TUE - Simon Phillips on Pete Townsend's "White City" or "Empty Glass" - serious.
