(AP) Obvious Despite the bad economy, summer camps are still filling up, proving two immutable facts: 1) parents will do anyhting to get their kids out of the house and 2) the lure of freedom, beer and teen sex is more powerful than money   (hosted.ap.org) divider line 54

But, the real excitement of course is going to come at the end of the summer, during Sexual Awareness week. We import two hundred hookers from around the world, and each camper, armed with only a thermos of coffee and two thousand dollars cash, tries to visit as many countries as he can. The winner of course is named King of Sexual Awareness week and is allowed to rape and pillage the neighboring towns until camp ends.

Yeah, but at that rate the poor kid's tools are not going to be rusted, they'll disappear entirely from their anatomy.

I loved summer camp as a kid. Lots of good memories. Shot my first gun. Kissed my first girl (Jessica Corbin, whatever happened to you?). The rope swing over the pond. One-Eyed-Charlie the Chef's (seriously only had one eye; guy caught some German shrapnel during the war) ham and cheese breakfast casserole. Campfires, wiener roasts, s'mores and flaming marshmallows. Swapping dirty jokes and drinking smuggled beer. Winning the kayak race at the camp Olympics. Yes, lots of good memories.

Except for the poison ivy. I could have done without that memory. And the camp's well had a bit of a sulfur problem, so you'd smell like rotten ass after a shower. Outside that, though, it was all good.

I went to Girl Scout camps growing up (just one or two weeks)and one summer in college when the summer job market sucked, was a counselor.

The summer I was there, about a third of the staff were lesbians, and the co-directors met at the camp a few years prior and were married in England. They slept in separate tents, though, and I did not pick up on that until someone mentioned it to me (and asked how I could've missed their rings). My gaydar doesn't work as well on the lesbians, I guess.

I also missed out on a lesbian lake skinny-dipping excursion, but spent the 4th of July in Chicago getting trashed with a bunch of the international counselors instead.

Good times.

When we first started hanging out together, this morning, we were just friends; but things change, and I've fallen in love with you. I just know that if you gave me a chance, I could make you feel so good. So I am coming, not as your buddy, and not as a co-counselor, but for the first time as a man - a man who loves a woman, and who wants to hold her and provide for her and, yes, have sex with her; but no, seriously, Katie, I love the way you laugh and I love the way your hair smells and I love it that sometimes for no reason you're late for shul, and I don't care that you're bowlegged and I don't care that you're bilingual - all I know is that I would have said no to every single person on your list because I've always wanted you.

/not obscure

I can't even imagine how much bubble-wrap they must put around the precious snowflakes at camp these days, but when I was a kid, camp was AWESOME. Rifle range, archery range, swimming, boating & canoeing, turtle hunting, horseback riding, campfire food made out of 50% dirt and leaves, poisonous spiders and snakes. Unlike the movies, the girl's camp was on the same side of the lake just on the other side of the dining hall, so except for the crappers & showers the camp was essentially coed. Many, many 14-year-old boobies were groped just out of range of the campfire light.

One summer, they opened up an old "store" shed that hadn't been used in awhile to distribute the bullets and arts & crafts supplies from. They found a very old retail rack of "Fizzies", which were a 60's abomination that were supposed to be an instant soft drink. They were actually alka-seltzer with coloring and sweetened with sacharine. Even when fresh, they were horrible, but these were antiques, so they sold them to us for a nickel a pack. We discovered that if you threw them in the lake, fish and turtles would eat them, get a REALLY surprised look on their face, and then puke. It was the best summer ever!

NO.. what it means is parents are too poor to take a vacation. I went to summer camp 8 or 9 years in a row because my parents didn't have the money to go to myrtle beach or Florida every year like everyone else in their social circle.

/probably more fun for the kids anyways.

I went to camp in Florida in 83-85 at a camp with a Lake Crystal and a kid had drowned there years before. His grave was right there on the lake shore.

Camp was great and I am glad I was sent there. The kids that really had it made went to "ski camp" where they had a new Mastercraft ski boat and got to ski all day.
