Developed by Jinguan Auto, which also makes bullet-proof limousines for the new rich in this vast country of 1.3 billion people, the vans appear unremarkable.

As do the anuses they sell.

They cost £60,000, can reach top speeds of 80mph and look like a police vehicle on patrol. Inside, however, the 'death vans' look more like operating theatres.

Thank God they included the performance stats. This will not do for my next vehicle as I am looking for a death van that can hit at least 120.

I'll just have to keep looking.

In a country as big as China, I don't see why they haven't figured out it's way cheaper to have executions in, you know, local prisons situated in various states or cantons, whatever they've got over there.

Kind of like we do it over here. Having to drive all over a country with 92 time zones just to shoot people has to be pretty pricey, compared to just having local walls to put them against.

This is why I get so confused when people talk about 'valuing human life.' If you look at the numbers, and problems we humans cause, humans actually have absolutely no value.

Try your nearest Ford dealership. They make a death van that can probably hit 120. I think it was called an Explorer.

The Chinese government is a weird amalgam of autocratic despotism and capitalism unrestrained by civic conscience, not socialism.

You know it's just a matter of time before the Acme Death Van Manufacturing Co. starts lobbying the Chinese government to make more and more infractions punishable by death, so that Acme can sell more vans and certain Chinese bureaucrats can make more cash by selling organs.

\doesn't it seem ironic that corruption is punishable by death
\\but the rather corrupt-seeming practice of selling organs from killed prisoners is not punishable by death?

I can relate to your above statement. For the longest time I've had trouble seeing any good in the human race as a whole or in many individuals that are basically scum.

One thing that doesn't make sense is how "the vans save money on building execution facilities in prisons or courts." What "execution facilities" are really required for lethal injection -- a table with restraints, a box of the relevant drugs, maybe a camera? I have a hard time believing any of these things are expensive, especially in China. Why would the docs prefer to operate within the cramped confines of a van?

As politically incorrect as it may be, human lives DO have value, but are subjective to the human making the grade. The life of a human can be of greater significance, thus greater value, than another. For example, I place a greater value on the life of a girl scout than that of a child molester. As Farker's often joke, the value of an American is greater than that of some cot-chewing African shooting at our helicopters.

If you actually perceive no value on human lives, you are either completely neutral (doubtful) or utterly pessimistic... or just Chinese, apparently.

When the Chinese finally get tired of this shiat, they will probably have more trouble finding government vans than government buildings. The government vans will probably be able to continue to operate during riots better than a building possibly without power or a building besieged.

More directly, the irony is that corruption is punishable by death in a nation with a society built upon winked-at corruption. Rampant-yet-denied corruption at every level of government is part of the rich Chinese cultural heritage.

I'm not being snarky when I say that. I'm a huge Sinophile in some ways. I didn't really understand some events in Chinese history until I started thinking of the dynasties (including the current one) as Chicago politics writ large.

wtfisthat: I'm inclined to believe that this is China's way of carrying out population control. Maybe the Chinese Gov't figures at 1.3 Billion people Human Beings are a dime a dozen.

I took a class in college about population, sustainability, etc. and one of the things my professor talked about was China's economy and the growing environmental concerns stemming from it. I'll never forget this... he made a comment that China will indeed have a very real problem in this context, but it will not have quite the issue controlling people's behavior to deal with it as we do. China isn't really known for its human rights record. When its government wants something from its population, it takes it.
