He died doing what he loved.

Making crappy commercials.

+1

But I'm sure the class action lawsuit will prove that it indeed had, and the accident was due to operator error.

Oh, he got his wings alright.

They had a moment of silence for him at the NY Redbulls game tonight and showed some photos of his stunts. I was actually moved. For 30 seconds.

The sad part is his sponser (red bull) is the one giving statements. Doesn't this guy have any friends, family, or even a manager?

Everytime a skier dies trying to make a totally crappy commercial, an angel gets its wings.

Make total sense, right? Not that bell-ringing crap.

bmwericus 2009-03-29 12:20:54 AM
'He died doing what he loved' - presumably that was impacting the ground at a very high speed?

I don't really get this anyway, I though BASE jumping was stupid the first time I saw it in the 1970's [how's that for cutting edge/edgy kids?], I remember the first guy to ski-parachute off of El Cap, and I thought that was foolish.

Some things never change and people die 'doing what they loved'

Whatever, I hope that is in the video you left for your kid to remember you by.

Yeah, this is why when you have a kid, maybe you ought to get a safer hobby and not be so selfish.

Or do it when the kid is older and can appreciate the 'died doing what you loved doing' bollox.

There are no old BASE jumpers.

My sister had a boyfriend in the Air Force who went BASE jumping during Desert Shield and broke both ankles jumping off some 1500-ft antenna in the desert somewhere beyond Riyadh. His buddies had to tell some cock&bull story about what really happened so he wouldn't get discharged.

He died jumping off some bridge not too long after, so I can tell this story now.

"Skinink suffered a fatal stroke during uncontrolled laughter when, as a peeping Tom at Maria Sharapova's house, he watched her boyfriend suffer a massive heart attack during the couple's lovemaking. 'He died doing what he loved' Skinink's parole officer said."

audionerd 2009-03-29 01:45:01 AM
Although I feel for the guy and his family and friends, if you do dangerous things, death can ensue. I watched this the other night after watching a guy shear off the right side of his Mercedes on a light pole. Luckily the guy didn't have a passenger, or it would have been fatal. He was trashed, got out with a scratch on his head, and all he could do is blabber about not getting a DUI. The moral of this story is BASE jump alone, and use German engineered equipment. Right? Right.

Jesus H Christ guys how long does this thread have to go on before someone mentions a Darwin Awar....oh, he had a kid.

Every time I see some asswad leaping off a building with a parachute I silently pray for a stray gust of wind to slam them against the wall and send them screaming to their untidy deaths. But then, my Mom didn't love me very much.

I don't know about the rest of you haters, but I think dying after ski-jumping in the prime of health and leaving your family millionaires is probably better than you're going to leave your family when you die on the toilet after working in some dead-end middle management job for decades.

Maybe that's just me, though.

/sad tag jumped with him?

Shane McConkey was an amazing free skiing innovator, and if nothing else a human being with a family that loved him. I can't believe there are still people that don't respect human life. No matter how someone passes, their life should be celebrated, not berated by a bunch of people that seldom stray from their keyboards...

Or maybe being there for your kids as they grow up is more important than the money.

Why don't you call his three year old daughter and ask how her celebration is going?

You say that because you've never skydived. Of course it sounds stupid and risky and it brings no appeal, you've never flown towards a sunset using your arms as wings, flying around cloud hills, fealing the wind on your fingertips.

For me, moving around yourself sitting on a chair, attached to a structure supporting 4 rotating discs and a propulsor that works thanks to 4000 controlled explotions per minute, finding a way around other vehicles like this with people inside that are either drunk, smoking, talking on their cellphone or all of the above, is what sounds stupid, endangering and ridiculous.

But maybe we're just used to people dying in car accidents.

Blue skies, black death, brother. Hope heaven is high enough for you.

For the f*cking assholes ripping the guy for continuing to do what he loves (and pays the bills) despite having children and a wife, what plan do you have in place in the case of your demise? People die every day that don't participate in activities such as BASE jumping.

RIP Shane and condolences to your friends and family.

/have lost more friends to drunk drivers than 20 years of "dangerous activities" in the mountains.
//Krupps, Elephantman, Notwithout, very Fred Phelps, he might be looking for some recruits for the funeral. F*cking losers.
