I think she'd be interesting as a guest speaker. She seems down to earth and fairly intelligent. And has an actual job.... unlike some of the previous housewives that have occupied the White House.

She can talk about how her pooter got her into the limelight.

It's true. She's famous for being married to somebody, not for what she's actually done in her life. Get used to it.

Yeah, being a lawyer or knowing more about politics than you ever will couldn't possibly be a factor.

She isn't famous for those things. She is famous for her husband and his political career.

I don't in any way mean that as a shot at any of her accomplishments or skills. Most people would never have heard of her without the existance of Obama.

I don't particulary care for the woman, nor her husband. However she could talk about how being from a two parent traditional houshold helped her reach her goals, and encourage other Americans, not just African Americans, to model their families on her parents, and her current family with two involved parents and the value of a good education for the children.

She could talk about the corrupt Chicago political machine, but I doubt she will.

I first read that headline as "Dear, Malkin." It makes more sense to read the story the correct way but Michelle Malkin would be a far more entertaining speaker.

Without her husband, she'd be just one more of thousands of lawyers. She's had a couple of good jobs. Lots of lawyers have. Why do you think she'd be invited without the last name Obama?

Hilary Clinton would have made more sense.

You seem pretty concern over this. But you shouldn't be, it was the students and staff at the school that went to all the trouble to get her, so why not let them have their fun?

Hillary Clinton was in the same position 16 years ago. Look how she's turned out.

Mr. Titanium 2009-03-28 01:13:41 PM
Why even have a commencement speaker? The focus SHOULD be on the graduates. They won't be listening to the speaker -- they are too busy planning the next few days of partying, moving, dealing with family, partying, and all that stuff. What's the point of a commencement speaker anyway?

If MO is a Secretary of State (or something similar) in 16 years then I'd believe she'd deserve the recognition. Right now, she's just a famous wife.

Moralpanic: I'm not especially concerned about it. I'm just pointing out that despite her amazing arms, she's really just famous for being married to somebody.

So people only select commencement speakers based on how famous they are? Wow, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton must really be busy.

Well, it's true that she's only famous because of Barack, but she's still a qualified commencement speaker. If she were just another lawyer, the difference would be that she wouldn't have the celebrity status.

You just proved my first point. She was invited because of whom she is married to, not for what she's done in her career. If you actually read any of my posts you'd see that I never said she wasn't qualified to speak. I only commented on why she was chosen. A reason that you yourself support.

A commencement speaker is generally just the final cheerleader before the school throws you to the dogs.

Well, i have to go walk the dog, but i'll save you some time and let you know ahead of time that Michelle will be holding dinners for dignitaries based on the simple fact that she's first lady with no real 'accomplishments' in life. Oh, and she'll also meet lots of heads of states, and again, it's simply because she's first lady and not because of any 'accomplishments' she's done.

Commencement speakers are generally chosen because they are of interest to the audience. Some speakers would be interesting to listen to, others would not...

Example:
Michelle Obama is known as an interesting speaker.
Nancy Reagan was not.

BTW, The DBS was not invited to speak at the school.

I think that you have a point, but you're also missing a point. I mean, HC was known for her activism in health care, etc. Laura Bush and Ma' Bush didn't stand out as much as HC. Maybe, as you said, because they *knew their place* and that their rise to notoriety wasn't through any actions of their own. While I admit that Michelle Obama mostly fits under this category (rising through no action of her own), I believe that her ambitions are as great as HRC's once were, if not greater, and that even if she weren't the First Lady, she would still have become a more-than-average, successful individual.

That being said, this is about the First Lady, not Michelle Obama.

Retarded biatching aside, I think this is very cool of her. For a rather small school with no national recognition (like Harvard, Yale, UCLA, etc.), their little grass roots campaign to get her to speak paid off. Good on her for agreeing to do it. And wouldn't it thrill the graduated if hubby tagged along too? I wouldn't mind meeting either of them, myself.

OK, I call bullshtye. She came from a family with a spiegle catalog worker and a city waterman on the south side of Chicago. She worked very hard, skipped grades, went on to Princeton and Harvard (none of these on legacy scholarships). She's the first First Lady to have a Post-Doctorate degree. She's served as a Dean in large universities, sat on corporate boards, all while raising two young daughters.

This woman earned her spot. Is she more visible due to her husband? Of course. But she deserves all the respect due to a person with a doctorate who came up from a family doing blue and white collar work.

She does not have a 'Post-Doctorate degree'. Primarily because there is no such thing, and secondarily she has a JD, a first professional degree. Frankly the JD is seldom referred to as a Doctoral degree because it is not a research doctorate, but a first professional degree like DC, for Chiropractors, PharmD, for Pharmacists, or MD for physicians.

A PhD is a doctorate, and studies after the doctorate are post doctoracte studies, and there are some certifications available post doc such as in Psychology that recognize work after the terminal degree for licensure purposes.

I have a doctorate, but I don't expect any college to have me chat them up because my parents worked for a living. They asked her because she is the first lady - which is perfectly fine.
