What's that? Collective Soul is having a concert? In ATLANTA? We surrender! We surrender!

Hender [TotalFark] 2009-03-26 03:43:15 PM
I would make a snarky "These guys are still around?" or "People still care about Collective Soul?" comment, but I did buy their last album. Hurm.

I'm not a fan of Collective Soul, but "Run" and "The World I Know" were pretty good songs...

Hell, I went to see them last Saturday night at Universal Studios for Mardis
Gra. The band was pretty tight, but Roland fell short. I think his voice was cutting out on him.

I love douchebags who get sarcastic about crap like this. It is like Bono. He is a douchebag because he actually goes out and tries to help people.

Then there are those who say...Who cares what such and such (Sean Penn...Bono...whoever) have to say...they are just Actors/Singers. Yeah, and they likely know way more about what they are talking about then the loser making the comment.

HOW DARE THEY?

For some reason, I thought of "Duece Bigalow: Male Gigalo" when I read that comment.

Honestly, I think Collective Soul sucks mountains of doggy dongs, but I don't think it's "stupid" to try to raise awareness of world crises. When I was a young teen, I first became aware of apartheid when I heard the song "Free Nelson Mandela" by Special AKA.

HotLonelyTeenageGirl [TotalFark] 2009-03-26 07:11:51 PM
I came in here to hate a whole lot, but you know what? Ed sounds very reasonable in that article about why he';s doing it, and it probably WOULD be good for people in Atlanta to have their awareness raised a little more.

Not that we'll ever do a goddamned thing about the Sudan because we won't piss off the Chinese.

Good for them, a decent band trying to raise awareness without getting soap-boxy. I think I read they put their last album out by themselves after geting dropped by their label, and it actually sold ok. I dont think they ever tried to come off (or were marketed) as anything but a straight-up rock band.

Well there was a big thing about refugees from african nations here in atlanta and how they need help, its small but it bring recognition because for every one douche on here being a dumbass you have 5 that learn something about the area.

There were many hints, allegations, and things left unsaid in his words. He needs to give a dosage of truth, not have a disciplined breakdown. The youth over there are in a blender, and afterwords there will be no collective soul left in their home.

The Amazing Mumford 2009-03-26 11:36:15 PM
How can anyone hate Collective Soul? You may not enjoy their music but they seem like a decent group of guys. Someone asked them to help out with their cause and they said yes. Nothing stupid about that subby.

And musically speaking, while not my favorite band by far, every album they've put out has had at least a couple of solid songs on there and a couple of albums have been fantastic top to bottom.

Darth Invictus [TotalFark] 2009-03-26 11:52:46 PM
I don't like Collective Soul's music. Not that it sucks or anything, but because they got a lot of airplay during a very dark time in my life, and hearing their music brings back very bad memories.

That, and fark Darfur.

They can kill each other to their bloodthirsty hearts' content, and it won't make one goddamned bit of difference to my own well being.

We should fix our own house before we try to fix everyone else's.

Until they divest their own fortunes to help them, Collective Soul can eat a bowl of dicks as far as I'm concerned. Same goes for that bombastic billionaire prick Bono.

Darth Invictus [TotalFark] 2009-03-26 11:56:02 PM

I refused to perform at Sun City during that time as well, all because of musicians. I mean, I was only playing trombone in the high school band, but it's the principle, you know?

I'm not jewish, so we should have just let that whole Hitler thing run it's course, too. I mean, it wouldn't have made one goddamned bit of difference to my own well being.

You're a real spiffy guy. Glad to know there are billions more just like you. Keep up the good work!

BravadoGT: You know, if there's one thing that can stop the murder, rape and pillaging of the defenseless civilians of Darfur--it's stocking them with food, clothing and other goodies!

THIS

I'm all for helping people who need it, especially in a country where vicious war with child soldiers has raged on for over 20 years while the majority of us ignore it. But throwing money at it will not stop the rebel factions from stealing more children to torture into soldiers so they can continue this vicious circle. All it does is give the bad guys more supplies to steal from the people who need it. If you want to help Darfur you can start by watching the documentary Invisible Children and then showing it to anyone who will watch. If we raise enough awareness for the majority of people to agree we need to step in and help, then maybe we can get a well trained military in there. Normally I'm a pacifist but I believe this conflict can only be solved by removing the rebel leaders involved. Take out the leaders and not only will the child soldiers no longer have to shoot at civilians in fear of being tortured, but there will be no authority left to steal the children and "train" them in the first place.

If you can watch this documentary without feeling sick inside or at least shedding a tear or two, chances are you aren't human.

That was my point, essentially. For all of Collective Soul's good intentions, they might as well burn the money they raise for all the help it actually does. And while it may be easy to ask aloud "Well, what HAVE you done for them?"--that doesn't make any effort or intention valuable. I could dance around with a lampshade on my head and say "I'm doing it to call attention to Darfur"--but does that really help them (or more importantly, legitimize my act by asking "Well, what have YOU done?") Of course not.

Darfur doesn't need charity. It needs guns, and people to point them at the Government and Janjaweed forces that are terrorizing the country. That's the only thing that will stop the carnage. And sorry, but that's a million miles away from paying your 35 bucks, buying a few Michelobs and bobbing your head to an hour of songs at the Tabernacle...

LOL! Great song, BTW. Tried to buy a CD copy of the entire album a few years ago - it was waaayyyy out of print and ended up costing me about $35 with airmail, etc.
