Is subby trying to say Kerplunk sounds just like, say, Nimrod? Cause, yeah, it doesn't.

I've almost entirely stopped listening to the punk/emo shiat I listened to while I was in high school/early college, but I'll still listen to "American Idiot" every once in a while. It is actually not half bad. However, even I think I have bad taste in music.

/Jethro Tull on now

yes, they have a poppyer sound..but really.. how were the ramones less poppy sounding? Joe Strummer CHOSE to be a punk. he came from the upper class. Rotten?lets not get started on that asshole.same chords, same strum. these guys toured there asses off, toured their way out of obscurity, and were given a chance by a record company with dookie. the rest as we say is history.

/how many bands have had the drummers dad be the driver for a tour?(lol)they EARNED every bit of success they have.
/its not Greendays fault that retards like Blink 182 came after 94. Greenday=poppyerpunk.blink and simliar bands=just a whole level of shiat on its own.

HAHA my FAVORITE counter argument. Some time ago a I was railing on and on about how some musician sucked or whatever and a friend of mine said, "you know- you keep going on about how much this musician sucks, but you know what? I'll bet he isn't sitting in his mansion biatching about what a shiaty musician you are." Shut me up pretty quick LOL.

/Not a fan of Green Day though- not my cup of meat.

You're complaining about repetetiveness in punk music? What's next, demanding that AC/DC or ZZ Top go prog? Or that blues musicians should finally "get over it"?

Not a fan of Green Day or the genre itself, but being consistent would be the least of my worries as a pop band.

They haven't been doing it right since the Radio Radio Radio 7 inch. Let's Go! was the beginning of the end for them, though it included a few decent songs and the gatefold double 10 inch on white vinyl was kinda cool packaging.

Green Day has never done it right.

Green Day got me into the Bouncing Souls when they opened for them in Asbury Park, NJ. My brother-in-law was at that show too, though we didn't know each other at the time.

I liked Kerplunk, Dookie, and American Idiot.

I'll bet my entire right hand that if Green Day and The Dead Milkmen where to cosmically switch places, then everybody at Fark would be whining about how the Milkmen are repetitive, poppy shiat while lionizing Green Day and lamenting that they don't make music "like that" anymore.

I know you, Fark.
I know your soul.

I would argue that Green Day doesn't really easily fit into any genre. People who think they are punk are going to say they are too poppy... those who say they are pop say they are too aggressive to really be pop. Rock? A couple of their songs... but not on the whole.

I thought American Idiot was a fantastic album in concept... not necessarily in execution. That said, Jesus of Suburbia is one of my favorite Green Day songs and it's 9+ minutes long. How punk is that?

People who distrust Green Day's ability to be good musicians really need to listen to all of Warning, their 2000 release post-Good Riddance and pre-American Idiot. It has the same attitude as Insomniac, which was a reaction to the popularity of Dookie and the backlash from fans, but much more focused and positively applied.

/Dookie... Warning... Nimrod... American Idiot... Insomniac... Kerplunk... Smoothed Out Slappy Hours; in that order

The Ramones were the greatest. I'll agree with that as long as it refers only to those who either don't know the Ramones, or know of the Ramones and don't like them. Here's why:

Call it power pop and get the fark off your pedestal.

It's amazing how folks love to advocate the "revolution" of now-30-year-old music and refuse anything after that. Things change, and if you don't like it, do what your heroes did and pick up your own farking guitar/mic/drums/bass/whatever and make the music you want to hear instead of whining that other people aren't fulfilling your expectations. Given a few weeks of playing you have as much skill as some of your vaunted gods of music so no excuses; the DIY ethos is one of the fundamentals of punk rock, remember?

STFU and play.

eh, I think it's a bit unfair to lump in Green Day with that load of shiat. Granted, I think Green Day helped pave the way for those bands to torture us via the radio, but that doesn't really seem like Green Day's fault.

I have no ill will against Green Day. I think if they weren't as big as they were and you couldn't easily associate them with the above listed acts, they'd probably be listed up their with the Screeching Weasels, etc.

That said, not entirely sure why American idiot garnered the rave reviews it did. Can't say i disliked what I heard, but it wasn't anything too special.

Fortunately, nobody here is in charge of my CD or MP3 player.

Personally, I love power pop. It's my favorite type of music and I don't care what anybody thinks. In fact, the more fark hates it, the more I like it.

Green Day is like MCR is like any power pop band before them. Big, fat sounding guitar work with catchy hooks and melodies. Do they produce some crap? Absolutely. That's why they made a fast forward button.

When it comes out, I'll be one of the first to steal it.

I'm by no means an expert, but to me Insomniac seems like the last punk record that Green Day did. Dookie was HUGE when I was in high school and that's what got a lot of people turned on to the Clash and the Ramones. Insomniac has to be my favorite album by them, but after that they started experimenting more. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but if they recorded another straight up punk record it wouldn't hurt my feelings.

The problem with a lot of people in the punk and metal genre is that if you make money off of your music you have sold out or you were never any good to begin with. What the fans seem to want is that the band has to struggle their way through life. Any musician with a small amount of success is no longer worth listening to.

I don't like Green Day because I don't like punk. According to a lot of people though you have to be starving to death, drug abusing, and your cd's have to have a poor sound quality to be "good".

Go back and listen to the Sex Pistols with a serious musical ear. YOu know what you will find? A lack of ability, a poor recording, and a lot of over dramatized anger.

I don't care if you like it but I'm tired of hearing about how bands that can barely play are some of the greatest musicians ever.

Pave_the_Planet 2009-03-26 11:44:35 AM
I loved Green Day, and then around the time I turned 19 or so, I lost interest, just about the same time that American Idiot was big. Political music gets annoying really fast.

It had fun, rocking tunes on it.

I hated them a couple of months after Dookie came out, but have since admitted they are actually not too bad. They have even, from time to time, impressed me.

I'm not saying they have nothing that is terrible; in fact they have quite a bit of crap. I'm just saying they have done enough interesting or just plain good stuff, every once in a while, to force me to constantly reevaluate my opinion of them over the past 15 years.

I was a pretty huge Op Ivy fan, and I loved most Rancid albums. I am definitely not trying to say anything bad about them. I just prefer Green Day. American Idiot and Warning are two of my favorite punk albums. They are no Dead Kennedys, but I don't think they are as poppy sounding as everyone seems to think here.
