The Funk Brothers have been on more #1 hits than the Beatles and Elvis Presley combined. Do yourself a favor and track down the documentary "Standing in the Shadows of Motown."

I second that emotion.

I like the documentary, but I almost wish they'd kept the interview segments and the concert segments separate and not alternatingly intermingled. The band was hot and I know that's what it was about, but I wasn't a fan of all the guest singers (*coughjoanosbornecough*) and that broke some of the momentum for me.

RIP, Funk Brother, and thanks for all the great work.

Well, I guess God needed a drummer in his band...

/I hate that cloying crap

Earguy [TotalFark] 2009-03-25 07:49:53 PM
Uriel Jones dies and goes to heaven. Outside the Pearly gates he's talking to St. Peter about the band.
"Who" askes the drummer "do you have playing here?".

"Everybody" says St. Peter, "We've got Billie Holliday, Ella and Bessie Smith sharing vocals, Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Willis on guitar, the bassist you just wouldn't believe'"

"So," askes the drummer, "who leads the band?"

St. Peter waits just a second before answering and replys, "Well, it's God of course, but occasionally he thinks He's Berry Gordy".

Earguy [TotalFark] 2009-03-25 07:50:40 PM
Uriel Jones dies and goes to heaven. While he is waiting outside the pearly gates, he hears some incredibly fast drumming coming from within heaven. He immediately recognizes the playing, and asks St. Peter if that really is Buddy Rich playing drums in heaven. St. Peter responds:
"No, that's God. He just thinks that he's Buddy Rich."

AiryAnne 2009-03-25 08:40:43 PM
Maybe he was watching American Idol tonight...

Man, if God thinks he's Buddy Rich, I can only imagine how he'd chew out the non-believers...;)

Fair enough...but in my defense, I said "Home of Rock 'n' Roll"...not the "Birth of Rock 'n' Roll".

But can you beat this list, with Mississippi and Chicago combined:

Marvin Gaye
Stevie Wonder
Question Mark & the Mysterians
The Stooges

Brownsville Station
Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels
The Marvelettes
Gladys Knight & the Pips
Tammi Terrell

Oh, so much THIS!

During the intro to 'Grapevine' you can hear the bassist's notes causing the snare on the drum to rattle before the drummer kicks in; just one of the coolest things ever.
And Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a great documentary.

Y-you're sure you want him on the list...?

LOL...my mom (79 years old) loves Kid Rock. Just wishes he'd not cuss so much. And the Kid is good to the City, so yeah, he can stay.

Hey, there's a few on there you wouldn't catch me listening to, but I'll admit it's subjective.

/really thought Madonna would have been the first to be slammed
//Diana Ross actually had to cancel concerts here for lack of sales. She has quite the reputation for being a majorly despised biatch in this town.

Here's Ben Harper doing "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" with the Funk Brothers from "Standing in the Shadows of Motown."

Soon as I saw the headline I was going to come in here and mention Standing in the Shadows of Motown. I see it has been well covered. What really amazed me is that most of the guys now look like the crowd found at Denny's for breakfast or walkin around the mall. Then they start to play...

RIP Drummer Man
Glad you lived to get some of the respect that Jamerson missed.

KwameKilstrawberry:
Nice list. I'm gonna save it. You can also add
Roxy Petrucci of the metal band Vixen (new window) with whom I went to High School.

The_Philosopher_King 2009-03-26 02:46:09 AM
Now that I looked it up, you can also add these to the list of people from Detroit area or if not born here, got their start here:
Rare Earth
Wilson Pickett
Insane Clown Posse
Ray Parker Jr.
Suzi Quatro

Was Frijid Pink known nationally?

Am I the only one who feels sorry for the kids coming along now and the music they have to listen to on the radio? We had Motown, Stax, TSOP, the English Invasion and all those great one-hit wonder bands who made some awesome records. So much great music, so many great musicians. These poor kids got Kanye, Jay-Z and Bouncie Knowles. WTF happened to talent?

I stole it from Metro Times Top 100 Detroit Songs. There's some old blues people that I'd never heard of that I took off, but probably should have left in.

Oops - I meant to put Rare Earth on there! Their version of "I'm Losing You" is epic.

Hmmm, dunno if Frijid Pink was nationwide or not, but I sure have heard of them.

/Still pissed Cleveland got the RNRHOF. WTF?

They had a hit with House of the Rising Sun in the mid-70s. Although the only place I ever heard it was on a K-Tel commercial when I was a kid...

Kind of a creepy sludgy version of the song.

/alarm goes off in 3.5 hours...too tired to linky
//the only places I hear "Bip Bop" played (one of Paul McCartney's silliest songs ever)
///and then the next song will be "Hangman" or some growling psychedlic blues.

Jones provided the propulsion for the short-lived "psychedelic soul" movement. That's him cooking along on the Temptation's "Puzzle People," a criminally forgotten album.

/come in and take a look at your mind.

He wasn't the last great funk drummer alive. I can see Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown's drummer) play every Monday night here in Madison, WI.

I didn't see the whole show, but as I was watching Smokey Robinson and Berry Gordy, as well as the "Idols" singing Motown songs, I couldn't help but think about this cat and wonder why nobody mentioned him-not even Ryan Seacrest. Did I miss it?

One of the best documentaries, of any kind, I've ever seen. Two thumbs up from me.
