They always manage to find an excuse against peace... so do the Pelestinians.

Perhaps it's all the cash both sides get to attempt peace rather than actually achieving it.

I'll wait here patiently while someone explains to me that Israel truly believes in a two-state solution and accepts the palestinian right to exist.

Justified considering all of the rocket fire coming from East Jerusalem. Oh, wait a minute....

Palestinians should send some rockets into the expanded settlements.

*sigh* I give up. I usually defend Israel, but I can't defend this shiat. If the Israelis allow this, they deserve what's coming to them.

EABOD, Netanyahu.

Let them, and we can start selling arms to the Palestinians too

Stopheles 2009-03-25 12:55:12 PM
Would the U.S. support a nation that did this that WASN'T composed of Europeans and surrounded by darker-skinned folk? If Israelis were mostly Sephardic Jews, rather than Ashkenazi, I doubt that it would be the number-one recipient of U.S. foreign aid, or at least it wouldn't be number-one by such a massive margin as it is.

SaintAnky 2009-03-25 12:56:35 PM
I used to defend one side or the other in these situations. Now it seems both the Israelis and the Palestinians have blood on their hands and are not operating in good faith.

At this point I think the best solution is for the US to declare neutrality in this issue, cut all foreign aid (including military support to Israel) to the afflicted region and let the aggrieved parties work it out themselves. At least our conscience will be clean at that point.

I dunno...that's sort of like putting two praying mantises close to each other to see which one eats the other.

While we don't take part in the fighting, some of the hypothetical blood is still on our hands.

What's the alternative? Give every Palestinian a full vote in the next Knesset election and hope that Israel can somehow maintain its Jewish identity? It seems like it's in Israel's own best interest to pursue some sort of 2 state solution, and the settlements aren't really helping.

moralpanic 2009-03-25 01:01:17 PM
What made this possible was Ehud Barak sellout to the right.

Dude, you're barking up the wrong tree. I'm a Jewish Zionist. However, the Palestinians have a right to a place to settle, and it's absolutely imperative to the hope of a lasting piece that the Israelis proceed in good faith.

This is not good faith. Israeli settlers don't "need" this land. They're continuing an old policy of evicting the Arabs from their land and developing the property for wealthier Jews. The ultimate goal is to destroy the Palestinians' property claims for a future state, which is one of the guidelines for the peace process. Even allowing settlement in the West Bank, much less encouraging it, as the new coalition is doing, resets the peace process, and it throws yet another cookie to the ultra-nationalist douchebags who do Israel more harm than good.

This is why Israel can't have nice things.

They didn't -- well, before the Israeli parliament made it illegal to mingle, fraternize, step foot in,. . whatever language you'd like other than Apartheid.

That's it, they've BOTH forfeited their right to the place.

Let's kick them ALL out, and found Atheistland there. That would be fun.

We'd be better caretakers of the Holy Land than either the Jews or the Palestinians anyway.

And if Tats ever said that, well, the world divides by zero basically.

At this point, I think almost everyone is getting tired of both sides now.

indylaw: This is why Israel can't have nice things.

Many settlers think the Jordan River bisects Israel.

Two state solution is no solution at all. And I can't figure out why anyone would be an apologist for a society that's based on ethnicity.

We killed a bunch of G.I.s in WWII to stamp that shiat out.

OlafTheBent: Perhaps it's all the cash both sides get to attempt peace rather than actually achieving it.

There's an actual correlation bewteen the amount of money received by the PA and the number of murderous terrorist acts they commit. The more "aid" money is sent to their government, the more Israeli civilian dies. Hmmm.

Democratic Secularist Omnivore: /can't wait to hear Tatsuma rationalize this one

I really love living in a world where a Jew has to justify his right to live in Jerusalem.

It's just not the same without czar. Us loony liberals are running shifts to provide opposition to the hardliner fundamentalists, but it's tiring work. We don't have the rabid zealotry fueling our posts.

moralpanic: What made this possible was Ehud Barak sellout to the right.

Actually, the mere fact that Barak is in the government (and he's the one who gets to approve new cities all over Judea and Samaria) makes it LESS likely for new Israeli yishuvim to be created in Judea and Samaria.

Since he got onboard with the government, this is him and not Moshe "Boogie" Yaalon whose became Defense Minister. Yaalon was previously dismissed from his position in the IDF for his refusal to carry out the ethnic cleaning of Gaza back in 2005.

Sure, that would work. What do you think the US News Media would make of that? Hollywood? The last President who pushed on this gang got Lewinskied 24/7 for a year.

Someothermonkey 2009-03-25 01:08:27 PM
vernonFL: Palestinians should send some rockets into the expanded settlements.

They will. Then the Israeli's will invade, kill a couple thousand Palestinians, most of them being civilians and justify the whole exercise by blaming the rockets. A brief media blitz follows and then the worlds goes on.

Stopheles: If Israelis were mostly Sephardic Jews, rather than Ashkenazi, I doubt that it would be the number-one recipient of U.S. foreign aid, or at least it wouldn't be number-one by such a massive margin as it is.

Glad to see your anti-Americanism is completely unburdened by reality:

Top Recipients of U.S. Foreign Aid, FY 2004[5] Nation Billions of Dollars
Iraq 18.44
Israel 2.62
Egypt 1.87
Afghanistan 1.77
Colombia 0.57
Jordan 0.56
Pakistan 0.39
Liberia 0.21
Peru 0.17
Ethiopia 0.16
Bolivia 0.15
Uganda 0.14
Sudan 0.14
Indonesia 0.13
Kenya 0.13

These numbers shift, and certainly Iraq is an outlier due to some war or other that apparently happened over there (I haven't seen it in the news lately, so I'm not sure what its current status is). But the combined aid to the nations surrounding Israel (even leaving aside the billions Obama wants to give Hamas), belies your "massive margin" claim.

When the US gives up New York, the UK London and France Paris, we'll talk. That's like saying Brooklyn isn't part of New York since it's not Manhattan.
