That wasn't so much of a fact check as it was an opinion check.

pixistick: That wasn't so much of a fact check as it was an opinion check.

That's what I was about to say. To-wit:

THE CLAIM: "We will recover from this recession. But it will take time, it will take patience, and it will take an understanding that when we all work together, when each of us looks beyond our own short-term interests to the wider set of obligations we have to each other, that's when we succeed."

How do you "fact check" that?

NeoAnderthal [TotalFark] 2009-03-25 10:01:42 AM
The facts were few and far between last night.

Mind if I lift the Conservative v. Liberal comparison?
With due credit of course.

Watched a good portion of the press conference last night.

I think we all need to "hope" that Obama's plan works, regardless of party affiliation, because I think there is one thing both sides can agree upon: If it doesn't work, we are totally f*cked. We will just be passing our problems onto our children and grandchildren, who will have it WAY worse than we have it if this doesn't work.

Meh...Hoover's policies failed for three and a half years in an economic situation far worse than this one, and we still managed to recover almost completely in a decade. No need to go all doom-and-gloom here...if he doesn't cut it, we vote him out in 2012 and try something else. America has seen worse.

FTFA

THE CLAIM: "We will recover from this recession.
THE FACTS: No one really knows when the recession will end.

Are they serious? That's a complete non-sequitor. It's exactly like saying the following

THE CLAIM: What goes up must come down.
THE FACTS: No one really knows when it will come down.

THE CLAIM: Puppies are adorable
THE FACTS: biatches don't know about my kittens

THE CLAIM: Beer is awesome.
THE FACTS: Obviously you hate whiskey

You really want to hope for a World War II type scenario if Obama's plans don't work? I sure as hell don't.

No need to go all doom-and-gloom here...if he doesn't cut it, we vote him out in 2012 and try something else.

If he doesn't cut it by 2012, we're gonna be totally f*cked because we will have added a shiatload more debt with nothing to show for it, putting us in a much, much worse position that would require the types of solutions that aren't politically feasible in order to fix it.

oops- one more:

"....cut our deficit in half by the end of my first term even under the most pessimistic estimates."

pessimistic estimates (Congressional Budget Office) does not agree.

/just like all politicians, he is using his own projections, just don't be dishonest about it or use a honest qualifier.

Meanwhile, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office last week predicted that the Obama budget would produce deficits averaging nearly $1 trillion over the next decade.

Wow, shock, dismay. Obama says one thing, and reality is something else.

I don't hate Obama. I don't want him to fail. I just think he's in over his head and we're going to end up even more screwed up than we were under Bush. And i'm only referring to the economy on this, not the socio-political firestorm that he's ushering in.

aba: From NeoAnderthal's profile: Conservatives believe each individual is responsible enough to make their own choices and live their own lives with minimal government intervention.

So you're saying that conservatives are pro-abortion/right to choose?

Conservatives believe the fundamental role of the government is to protect the citizens from each other, from external enemies, and from abuse of power by the government itself.

Illegal wiretapping? Torture? Those aren't abuses of power from the government?

I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'.

You know, Obama has taken more heat than I think a President normally would in his first two months. Then again, he is changing much more that a President normally does in his first two months, and he certainly knew the situation of the country when he took the job, so it's not like it should surprise anyone that people aren't going to give him as much slack as his predecessors.

DrZiffle 2009-03-25 02:33:53 PM

The only thing that gets me in a twist is completely ignoring all of those extra-budgetary "emergency spending" deals that Bush used to get around that pesky congress.

DarnoKonrad: Shryke: actual facts . . . Funny.

Want me to rub your blind face in some of them? Or did you fail to read the full article?

Here's one!

THE CLAIM: "Our assumptions are perfectly consistent with what blue-chip forecasters out there are saying."

THE FACTS: The Obama administration's economic growth projections are more optimistic over the next five years than those of the Blue Chip Consensus, a monthly average of 50 economic forecasts from the private sector.

The Blue Chip projection is for a deeper contraction this year than is foreseen by the administration - 1.9 percent versus 1.2 percent. Then it foresees growth of only 2.1 percent next year, instead of 3.2 percent, and less than 3 percent in each of the next three years, when the administration's forecasts are for 4 percent or better.

After 2015, the blue chip forecast is a little brighter than the administration's.

SOOOOOO, the next year will have 50% MORE contraction then Obama's numbers, and 40% LESS growth the next year, and so on. This, if I need to spell this out for you, spells much larger deficits than Obama predicts. I would also say this is hardly "perfectly consistent".

As another posted pointed out, it's kinda hard to fact check a speech full of rainbows and unicorns, so the article is kinda short.

Gosling [TotalFark] 2009-03-25 02:35:26 PM

This is fact-checkable?

"I think kittens are cute!"
"Oh, really? Let me just break out the charts..."
