(MTV) Unlikely Review states that Pearl Jam's "Ten" sounds just as good now as it did seventeen years ago. Reviewer assumes it actually sounded good in the first place   (newsroom.mtv.com) divider line 144

Yeah, right, Subby. Pearl Jam's "Ten" really sucked in its time, as compared to the other great stuff that was out there. Here are the top 5 songs on Billboard's chart for the time when "Ten" was released:

1 Boyz II Men - End Of The Road
2 Sir Mix-A-Lot - Baby Got Back
3 Kris Koss - Jump
4 Vanessa Williams - Save The Best For Last
5 TLC - Baby-Baby-Baby

Yep, no way that songs such as "Once," "Even Flow," "Black," "Alive," or "Jeremy" could compete with that stellar calibre of material. Yep, that Pearl Jam album sure sucked compared with all the other outstanding music of that era, huh?

And the #1 album of that year? Garth Brooks' "Ropin' the Wind." #2 was Michael "I was still kinda black back then" Jackson's album "Dangerous." Yes, it's true that a groundbreaking album (Nirvana's "Nevermind") was #3, but #4 was a Billy Ray Cyrus album, "Some Gave All." Yep, no way that Pearl Jam's best-known album could could ever be in the same league with albums that contain such classic tunes as "Achy Breaky Heart," huh?

Ten was their best album without a doubt. Animals wasn't bad either as a sophomore effort. But they steadily went down hill from there.

Awwwwwwww... Is someone stomping on your cherished memories of times gone by?

Poor thing...

No, Cyberluddite only pointed out that everything else around sucked. I would posit that Ten is one of the best albums of the past 25 years.

Of course, that's my opinion, and it should now way influence what you think about it.

As do I, except he failed to mention "Porch" as another example of awesome from that album.

It's being released for Rock Band today.

I can't wait to get hammered and sing Oceans. It's going to be epic, by which I mean epically terrible.

pixistick 2009-03-24 02:32:21 PM
Let's see I still listen to Ten regularly

How much do I listen to this crap?

Cyberluddite: 1 Boyz II Men - End Of The Road
2 Sir Mix-A-Lot - Baby Got Back
3 Kris Koss - Jump
4 Vanessa Williams - Save The Best For Last
5 TLC - Baby-Baby-Baby

That would be none Bob.

If you ever find the version of Porch from the Atlanta concert (1994?) that was released on a 3-disc digipack, it's among one of the best concert version in any genre. Around 15:00 long, IIRC. Amazing.

/has spent more money on PJ bootlegs than any other artist, by far

Back in the day, I sold the CD for a premium at a local used record store. I imagine it's worth more than most tapes.

I would concur with that as well. As was Nirvana's "Nevermind" album that came out the same year, as unpopular as that sentiment may be among the Fark "I only listen to obscure indie music that none of the rest of you peasants has ever even heard of so I'm much cooler than you" continigent.

I loved that concert season where they released every (?) show from the tour on double CDs. My ex and I not only bought the Memphis show, but several others just to get different versions.

I wish I knew where to start on those, there are so many... The one I was referring to was back when you had to buy the individual discs (5-6 songs each) for about $15 each, made in Austria/Japan/Germany, etc.

When they started releasing later concerts, that was a pretty genius way to preempt the bootleggers and the burgeoning Napster people.

Ten is one of those albums that no matter what mood I am in I can listen to and have the music compliment my mood.

I can pretty much enjoy Hail to the Thief the same way.

Dreadstar [TotalFark] 2009-03-24 02:44:36 PM
Ten is definitely one of my "desert island" albums. First time I heard "Brother" on the radio a few weeks ago, I almost drove off the road having a joygasm.

17 years from now, THIS will still hold up.

Sooner or later in every thread about Pearl Jam someone posts a link to a Pearl Jam misheard lyrics video, so I might as well get it out of the way here (guaranteed not to be a Rickroll).

GregoryD 2009-03-24 02:56:23 PM
Pearl Jam took almost a full year to hit once the album was out. Alive was around, but I don't think they really hit until Evenflow. (although I think Alive is the better song) Then once Jeremy hit, it was over.

I was never really a big Pearl Jam fan, especially not in comparison to some of my friends, but I did like "No Code" and their EP "Merkin Ball".

Cyberluddite: 1 Boyz II Men - End Of The Road

I still know the chorus of that song by heart.

El Chode [TotalFark] 2009-03-24 03:03:18 PM

Hands-down, one of the best rock albums ever. It's replayability is simply undeniable.

The band has put out great albums since then, but nothing comes close to Ten.

Ten is a great album, not much doubt there.
But, for my money, Dirt is still the best album to come out of Seattle during that time period.

The Fark general rule of thumb for liking bands appears to be "If most people have heard of them, then it's not cool to like them."

It may be a little late to be considered the same time period, but my vote is for Soundgarden's Superunknown (yes, even Black Hole Sun, which I have heard eighty brazilian times thanks to MTV)

Ten is easily one of the best albums of the 90s. And Vs was an awesome follow up. Fun to listen to both albums for the sound and realize you don't hear that any more, because pretty well no one records like they did, especially with Vs.

/almost got crushed at a midnight release party for Vs

Superunknown still doesn't get all the credit it deserves.

I still listen to it daily.

Like Suicide is quite possibly one of the greatest songs ever written in the 90s.

I have a vinyl copy that came out the week before the CD IIRC. It has no title at all.

Were there ones actually pressed with "Five Against One" as the title?

And did anyone order the tittie-pink box set (new window)?

I think I am going to.

Pearl Jam has been my favorite band for eighteen years. Ten is a classic.... but I'm a huge fan of their later stuff too. I'm really looking forward to the new album and tour. They are the best live band out there.

It's hard to believe it's been that long ago since Ten was first released. The fact that Brother is #1 on the modern rock charts just goes to show the state of popular music these days.
