Yet when Rollins was interviewing Gene Simmons -he refused to call out this douchebag when he was bragging about his money.

Everything in America is on the decline because of greed.

Why utilize new technology when you can whore out old ones?

Capitalism. It doesn't mean innovation. It doesn't mean consumer benefit.

The bottom like is farking people over.

I'm trying to think of any other musicians/ industry people that welcome the elimination like Rollins does. It was kind of refreshing.

There's still a lot of great music out there that's got nothing to do with commercial pop. Independent labels are still churning out incredible music, you just have to know where to find it.

Of course, a bunch of retards on Fark will call you pretentious if you like anything that's not manufactured pop, or use a certain website named after a farming tool as a method of discovering new music, but I'm sure most people have a thick skin about internet insults.

The industry had their chance to move forward ten years ago when they nuked Napster. They didn't understand it, they felt threatened by it, and they were stupid enough to think they could stop it.

Good riddance to a system run by bean counters and geared to reproduce past successes rather than reward innovation. One day a future generation will dig the bones of RIAA execs out of the La Brea Tar Pits.

Mr_Fabulous 2009-03-23 11:20:45 AM
OK, that'll teach me to post and then RTFA.

That brief interview was actually the most intelligent and interesting thing I've ever heard from him. (Which is damning with faint praise, but hey...it wasn't that bad.)

So, never mind.

I take whatever Pitchfork fawns over with a grain of salt. Some of it's not bad, but quite a bit of it seems to suggest that even Indie labels are guilty of payola. (Deerhunter, anyone?) All in all, Pitchfork is just another source that I use to find new music.

Agreed. With file sharing, Myspace, torrents, etc, there is no reason why you shouldn't check out a band you've never heard. People just need to stop believing that what's played on the radio and hyped on TV is an indication of what every new album sounds like.

Kick back watch it crumble,
See the drowning, watch the fall
I feel just terrible about it,
That's sarcasm, let it burn

I'm gonna make a toast when it falls apart
I'm gonna raise my glass above my heart
Then someone shouts "That's what they get!"

For all the years of hit and run
For all the piss broke bands on VH1
Where did all, their money go?
Don't we all know

Parasitic music industry
As it destroys itself
We'll show them how it's supposed to be

Music written from devotion
Not ambition, not for fame
Zero people are exploited
There are no tricks, up our sleeve

Gonna fight against the mass appeal
We're gonna kill the 7 record deal
Make records that have more than one good song
The dinosaurs will slowly die
And I do believe no one will cry
I'm just farking glad I'm gonna be
There to watch the fall

Prehistoric music industry
Three feet in la brea tar
Extinction never felt so good

If you think anyone would feel badly
You are sadly, mistaken
The time has come for evolutionfark collusion, kill the five

Whatever happened to the handshake?
Whatever happened to deals no-one would break?
What happened to integrity?
It's still there it always was
For playing music just because
A million reasons why

(All) dinosaurs will die

I think that's what I was getting at. I'm a big fan of Merge records. I was in no way endorsing Pitchfork, but was saying that is one alternative avenue from the radio or MTV to find new music.

Not everything Pitchfork writes about is great, but they do seem to cover a lot of shiat that is great. So it's a primary source for me.

Exactly. The way Pitchfork does their reviews and grade albums is the epitome of pretentiousness, but at least they cover a good amount of good music coming out today, even though its extremely odd that they fawn over anything Kanye West does.

Most "indie" labels aren't independent, that's why. Most of them are merely the "minor leagues" to build up grassroots support for a band before they are brought into the majors. The labels are all owned and distributed by the same major labels that spawn the next pop star.

Not a hater, he just isn't as smart as he tries to appear.

But the '$19.99 for a CD' thing?

When CDs first came out the record companies said the price was high due to the new technology and would eventually drop to $5.99.

Yes, I'm sure it's better than any liner notes in the history of classical music, jazz, classic rock. I mean, it's on the CD of a Tinsel Town rebellion band, and you know everything, so I'm betting the motherfarking farm on it.

He has probably memorized as much info as he can on just about any topic. He reminds me of Janeane Garofalo; in a situation where he can sit there and recite what he's read, he does well and comes off as highly intelligent.

Hit him (or her) with something that requires much analytical or critical thought and can't be answered with something they memorized from a book, and you're in for a train wreck. At least a mild accident, anyway. That's the difference between knowledge and being able to quote what you read.

And the artist make less money from a CD sale than vinyl or cassettes as the record companies still hold out $.50 or so to compensate for the difficulties in making CDs.

Of course, I guess we should all be grateful that CD burners were not available back in the 80s or CD technology would have been outlawed like DATs.

I do a deal with my daughter like carbon tax credits. When she wants Shinedown, I offer her a 2 for 1 in something less plastic and insipid. Thus far this has made her a fan of Nirvana and Cheap Trick, and kept Coldplay off her MP3 player. She hates most Zappa and all Rush, but she's still young and stupid.

Pop music today is just awful, it's like some form of state sponsored conditioning as to how we should aspire to mediocrity.

Kali-Yuga 2009-03-23 03:38:46 PM
Dingermann: Never understood this logic. Does music somehow change when it becomes popular?

Not necessarily, but when bands (like Metallica) change their music to become more popular, the quality definitely suffers and any "artistic integrity" they may have once had goes right out the window.

And a band/group being popular with mainstream America is definitely an indicator it will be nothing more than radio friendly pablum.

I know it's become a cliche, but it's true that anything wildly popular in music and/or art, does suck.

Now think about what the spirit of your post was and tell me if Carlin was or was not taking advantage of that sentiment with his own punchline ... taking liberties with statistics and facts because those idiots will kinda get it and laugh as though it were true. He dumbed down his own art, to make it funnier to the average person.

Ha! Well put. It's very minimalist in a way that's not interesting (opposed to minimalist music that is - Murcof, Eluvium, Steve Reich, etc).

As far as finding new music goes, I've been using the 'net to do that since I was 14 (29 now). I'll not wax nostalgic, but the best sources for finding new enjoyable music have been through forums of bands I enjoy and MySpace Music (of all places).

Don't know if it was less or not but the companies were/are notorious for not paying artists much money.

And, not to give you any shiat, but I don't recall DAT being outlawed...

Of course it's greed. Look at the ridiculous 'music' on the majority of stations (except classic songs)that are in heavy rotation. All over-produced, watered down and vomit-inducing flashiness. Nothing is REAL anymore. It's all garbage. I haven't listened to the radio in 3+ years.

Turn off the radio, turn on real talent!!!

The Audio Home Recording Act of 1992, while it didn't outlaw Digital Audio Tapes outright, essentially killed any home consumer market for them when it was mandated they had to include a Serial Copy Management System in all DAT recorders.

Professional DAT equipment was exempt.

No, because Rollins is a bully and a hypocrite who mined the death of his friend under unfortunate circumstances to further his career and who talks shiat about Hollywood even as he cashes checks from shows he has been on. There is really no reason to think that whatever spews from his mouth has any weight to anything whatsoever.

"YOU GUYS ARE AT WAR HERE, I WAS IN A WAR. THE INDIE ROCK WARS. WE WENT INTO BATTLE EVERY NIGHT. YOU THINK YOU GOT IT TOUGH HERE IN THE MIDDLE EAST? DID YOU NOT READ GET IN THE VAN?"

I actually find Rollins amusing sometimes (including his work with IIII), but did anyone catch the "special" where he went over to the middle east and told a bunch of twenty-somethings that the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was to drop Ramones albums from airplanes? I think it was the first time I've ever seen an audience at a show being taped for public broadcast so unaffected by the performance.
