I saw them on the this tour, and there was a huge drunk guy up front who kept asking them to play this song, but they never did. I kind of think that was maybe just to spite him.

That was very nice, thank you.

Always felt bad for Trey Gunn in this double trio. Just seemed superfluous.

And Mastoletto's got them big ham-handed WHOMPS that make him irrelevant as well.

Fripp/Bruford/Levin FTW

I just don't get I guess....I have tried many times over the years to listen to this band, and I just don't like them. Maybe it's them, maybe it's me, but I thought that performance sounded like crap.

Say what you will about Trey Gunn in this lineup, but his "The Joy Of Molybdenum" album is absolutely brilliant.

As for Mastelotto, he really didn't shine in Crimson until Bruford left. I saw them in 2001, and he was incredible. I still haven't listened to the new lineup with Mastelotto and Gavin Harrison, but I imagine that combination of drummers has to be amazing.

bbernardini 2009-03-23 09:09:45 AM
Addendum:

Mastelotto was the drummer on XTC's "Oranges and Lemons," and that's a great performance as well.

Also wanted to say that he's come a long way since being a member of Mr. Mister.

...and on lead vocals: Jay Sherman.

2 KC links in 3 days? Awesome. Though this song has always kind of struck me as goofy, I still like it.

Gavin Harrison can do no wrong. He's my #1 favorite drummer working right now.

I think not going to see the double-trio ranks up in my top 5 shoulda-seen-them.
In hindsight, as much as I love the 'discipline' era, I think the DT pretty much is my fave Crimson.

Intriguing to see Fripp sitting down, too.

? He's always sitting off to the side. I saw them in Montreal in the 80's and Fripp stopped playing when a camera flash went off.

dmax: Fripp/Bruford/Levin FTW

And that other guy, whats his name? Adrian Blue? Baloo? Something like that.

I've never felt sorry for Trey Gunn... "King Crimson - Eyes Wide Open" has got to be one of my favorite concert DVD's... and Trey Gunn is amazing on it.
2 bass players ain't a great idea though.

Funny how the masses will practice their schadenfreude when a young starlet gets annoyed by people taking hundreds of pictures of her vagina and digging through her garbage, but they'll happily oblige some old fart who doesn't want to damage his precious retinas. I wonder what would happen if Fripp got the TMZ treatment.

Good band, though.

It doesn't have anything to do with retinas--it has everything to do with copyrights. Fripp is ultra-anal about people recording (audio or video, even photos) of the band. He's determined not to do nonsense publicity stuff, but also very guarded about unlicensed reproduction of the band's work and image.

i agree. the album did absolutely nothing for me but the dvd rules for some reason.

If that's the case, then it might do him some good to learn about the bootleg scene. If anyone is going to make money off of him, it's not going to be the sandals-wearing dude pushing 50 in the fifth row with a DAT recorder in hand. At least, not in the western hemisphere.

saw them on this tour as part of the H.O.R.D.E. fest along with Blues Traveler, Lenny Kravitz and Rusted Root as well as a few years later in a much smaller, more intimate setting. Fripp came out and chatted with the fans waiting at the door prior to them being opened..

Both were amazing performances from two different, but equally amazing incarnations of this band.

This video had WIN all over it...

neat.... it's weird though, i've never heard any 90's KC stuff, i somehow recognized that song... maybe i heard it on the radio once...

THIS link peaked my interest though...

Didn't know he typically sat when playing with Crimson; seen the League, and there, it seems normal...

It's you.

While copyright might have something to do with it, it's mostly that the person with their shiatty little flash camera is not present in the performance, they are a leech on the energy between band and audience. It's no different than someone having a conversation while the music is playing. I believe RF has called that "vampiric" before.

I'm totally with him on the photography part and for anyone who whines "But it's just a photo, what's the big deal", do this experiment: instruct a friend or family member with a camera with a flash to take a picture of you any time they feel like it, while standing 5 to 10 feet away pointing the flash right at your eyes. It could be while you're eating, while you're watching TV, sleeping, whatever, they can't tip off their intentions. I bet you your first reaction isn't going to be "Hahahaha, that's so cool, you stood 5 feet from me and now I'm functionally blind for a moment".

For the Pat M. fans, if you haven't already, check out the P4 CD The Roar of P4, which is RF, TG, PM and TL in total improv mode. I was at that gig and it was pretty intense.

Yup. No Prob / you're welcome.

Let's hope it gets to see the light of day, fully, officially.
it was so neat to finally see "starless" and "lament" in action!

I noticed that the sound quality on the "easy money" clip [from the same source/concert/clip as that "improv" greenlit from a few days ago] is remarkably better than the other versions of the same clip on youtube. methinks the person got the original reels or just dubbed a soundboard copy of the concert onto the video part of the clip] [i believe it's from the Central Park concert???]

Uhh, you're kidding right? Adrian Belew has played with everybody, and he's been in the band for 25 years now. He's played on Talking Heads' Remain In Light, Paul Simon's Graceland, played with Bowie, Henry Rollins and even William Shatner (lol did not know that!).

Anyway, yeah I saw this tour, in NYC, and I remember thinking that Fripp looked like he was going to assassinate anyone in the band who got one note wrong, or anyone in the audience who annoyed him. Creepy dude.

I can one-up you on that list: when Spinal Tap played in Mesa, AZ, back in...93???...he came out and played bass on Big Bottoms.

Of course I'm kidding. I was pointing out the previous poster's failure to mention Belew as an integral part of the band.

And don't forget that he went to the Frank Zappa School of Rock

Good to see Dick Cheney and his old pal G. Gordon hanging out again...

I prefer the 80's quartet lineup, which as a bonus provided my favorite musical insult. While rehearsing/recording Three of a Perfect Pair, Fripp had another hissy-fit about the drummer's meter-shifting tendencies. When asked to comment on this by a reporter, Bruford replied "It's safe to assume by now that Mr. Fripp can count to four" (paraphrased)

/and Belew played with Nine Inch Nails, for you youngsters out there

interesting since his creativity totally swan dived after the mid 70s, including his odd time fetish. says alot about the later KC stuff i guess.

Bruford comments on this performance in his autobiography--the band members hated the behind-the-scenes maneuvers needed to produce it, and they hated the end result.
