Stupid liberal ivory-tower intellectuals. They should teach the Conservative style of marriage: marry 1 guy and sleep with him 10 times during the course of the marriage.

My money is on a divorce in less than 3 years. You're not buying a car, honey.

That sounds like a prescription for a long, happy marriage.

Humphrey narrowed responses from more than 150 men to a shortlist of 10 men with a sense of humor and as tall or taller than Humphrey.

Wow, high standards there. Who were the dopes who said they had no sense of humor when they applied? Or did they have to pass a humor test?

And you thought liberal arts degrees were silly

There's a slow descent into uselessness of your humanities degree. The further down the list you go, the more you've wasted your college years:

History
Anthropology
Classical Studies
English
Sociology
Cultural-Specific Studies (i.e., Women's Studies or African-American Studies)
Psychology
Film Studies
Art
Political Science
Law

Since it's not on your list, I'm going to conclude that my philosophy degree is highly useful.

I assume you're talking about undergrad degrees, in which case, I'd say everything on your list except English is useless except to the extent it's enjoyable to the person taking it.

Really? My question #1: Did your school teach you how to proofread?

Who is her professor, Bret Micheals or Flavor Flav? This is really not much more than one of those shows or the bachelor. It is just that some college (thank goodness it is in England) decided to be dumbasses and giver her college credit for living. She is an attention who-a.

The really useful graduate degrees are always more specialized. My choices for grad school were National Security, Military History, and Maritime Studies. As it turns out, I decided to study the last two and work with the underwater archaeologists.

I thought it was marry one girl and then get caught wearing a diaper in an airport restroom while doing meth with a male hooker?

UNC_Samurai: The really useful graduate degrees are always more specialized

Sure, but there are useful graduated degrees in several of the fields you mention, even if the degrees are usually more specialized. And lawyers generally just have a non-specialized J.D.; there isn't much point to getting the next level specialization (LLM) unless you're in tax or are a foreigner trying to practice in the U.S.

1) Don't go to law school because you think you'll make a shiat ton of money. If that's the reason you're there, quit and do something else immediately.

2) Don't think that the economic slow down hasn't hit attorneys. Lots of firms are downsizing and right now probably isn't a good time to be solo.

So...good luck with that.

I wouldn't be so sure. School rank? Class rank? If you're at a highly ranked school of if you're near the top of your class, you'll probably be in good shape (~$130k/yr). If you're pulling median grades at Roast Beef State College of Law and Cosmetology, you're in for an unpleasant surprise (~$35k/yr doing PI work with tons of student loan debt, unemployable in anything except law because employers think you're overqualified, etc.)

Its always interesting to see how much crap Liberal Arts majors get around here. Its not that people talk about how great their own careers or majors are in engineering or business. Its all about how LA majors somehow suck. The greatest thread was the one where the Wall Street Journal posted a comparative list of salaries for people with only a bachelor's degree 10 years after graduation--a Philosophy degree made damn near the top of the list if not the top itself. This place went batshiat crazy.

You know what they say, "over-specialization breeds weakness." Your "studying old boats" and military history education will certainly help you get a job in so many more places than my JD.

Be sure to let all of us know when you get to make a 15 second appearance on a random shipwreck special on the History Channel so we can watch the crowning achievement of your life.

Tron Lafontaine: OK, I'll bite... how exactly is an English degree useful?

I assume some of them get hired on to do editing, journalism, technical writing, etc., in which case the skills they developed in class are put directly to work in their jobs. The rest of the jobs on the list don't seem to have any real employment prospects in-field unless you get a graduate degree.

/was not an English major.
