Hmmmph. It's already being held by customs. Sounds like the U.S. PLANS to repatriate it. But they couldn't IMMEDIATELY be reached for comment.

Hey, Frank! We've got to print this story in 5 minutes! Can you see what their side of it is?

Phone rang once and nobody answered, and I didn't have time to wait any longer!

Alright, great, we tried, but couldn't reach anyone for comment. We are thorough and honest journalists!

"smuggled to the US over a century ago"

FTFA: The coffin is currently in the hands of the customs authority in Miami, Florida, who confiscated it after it was shipped to the United States from Spain, added the statement.

Over a century and it's still stuck in customs. Damn.

I actually cried a bit when the Buddhas were blown up. When you are that old, you transcend your original religious roots and simply become part of Humanity's collective history. (Sort of like the way the Pyramids, Stonehendge and The Temple of Athena have become a part of our collective history.) When the statues went down, a little bit of what makes us Human died.

They should totally return those items to Egypt who built them fair and square on the backs of countless slaves.

I'd be interested to hear why you feel this way Farbekrieg? Or, were you just trolling?
I'm not saying theres anything wrong with your feelings, provided you can give a reason (even if the reason sucks).

However I think that the original poster of this subthread is correct, blowing up magnificent pieces of art & history does destroy some of what makes us human, i.e. our collective past as a species.

On the otherhand, the destruction of the Buddhas along with the events of 9/11 and Eric Robert Rudolph's life, are all teachable moments about how religious fundamentalism coupled with explosives = EVIL.

I was in Cairo recently for a couple of days. It's so run down and dilapidated and overpopulated.

The pyramids were cool, though, and the people were nice.

The English at least did pull off one case of beneficial looting, the Elgin marbles. If they hadn't been looted from the Parthenon some parts quite likely would've ended up gone for good eventually.

Coupling 9/11 with blowing up the buddhas is, well, ignorant. And the transition from one religion to the next is, without a doubt, more human than living in the past. Violence, according to history, is more human than peace. ars breva, and all that. sorry, it's been a long day, so I'm not stating that as eloquently as it sounds in my head. Also, the buddhas weren't very artistic. just big and old. big and old doesn't automatically make something important, else people like teddy kennedy would be getting knighted.

Important fact about the NYC collection (well, most of it, anyway): The Met had permission to remove the items from Egypt.

Antiquities laws are finally being enforced around the world, so there's a good chance we'll send this mummy back.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art returned a masterpiece of Greek art (the Euphronios krater) to the Italians a few years ago, but they bought it in the 1970's under very suspicious circumstances.

And I think that the Greeks will get the Elgin Marbles back, as well. They asked for them in 2004 and the British wouldn't discuss it because the Greeks hadn't built the museum they'd promised to to hold them and the rest of the Parthenon artifacts.
