Hi folks-
This is my middle school young women's ensemble in concert this past Friday. It's 100% volunteer- the ladies put in 3 - 7 hours a week outside of normal school hours. And yes, the average age of the girls is 12.

In December, several of you very kindly supported them in a local endeavor; we just wanted to say thank you.

That's cool. Be proud of your Farkers, Drew.

That's really nice of them, but they should probably get the congestive heart failure checked out.

They sound beautiful. All of their hard work is paying off...that's not an easy piece. You must be very proud of them!

PfizerX 2009-03-22 01:29:46 PM
That was actually really good, kudos.

The girl doing the solo at the beginning should sing Gaelic music (Enya style), it would fit her nicely.

They're not professional, of course, but for 12 year olds they're pretty damn good. Unfortunately for you this thread went green before the TFers could chime in, so the quality of replies will be lacking. Still, they did a good job.

/12 year olds, dude.

Ok...It's nice that a bunch of girls did that as a "Thank You" for those who showed support, but I lasted about as long as I do at the elementary school talent show.

Take it to TFD.

Yes, we're the only ones devilishly clever enough to post pedobear pics.

I've always liked that arrangement, except for the key change, it moves way out of the range of a developing voice.

On a serious note (pun not intended, but I'll go with it), how'd a middle school get away with a song with a chorus of 'praise the Lord'? I guess it could be a parochial school. Just curious...

Since this is fark, I'll go ahead and fark it up a bit too-

Thanks- I re-arranged it for SSA choir and lowered it a M2. It's much more comfortable (top note is an F)soapdish: So what's the conductor look like?

In the hopes of dispelling myths and rumors about religious music. Past SCOTUS rulings give a lot of leeway to music educators in music choices. I did Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus with my sixth graders last year. It's not a question of religious content, it's cultural context that matters. That's a historical piece of music. O Sifuni Mungu shows a blend of two different cultural styles.

The line is drawn when the teacher starts telling students they should believe this or that.

My personal favorite isn't parent complaints about religious music, it's the hispanic immigrant father griping that I shouldn't do songs that aren't in english... Curse me and my love of Dirait On

yup! just send your $5 to Drew, and you, too, can be one of the cool kids!

actually, TF was pretty boring, imho ... i had two sponsors, back in the day, and i actually enjoy being a liter more ... and it's free

it wasn't so much higher quality, mostly just "more stuff"

it does have a different feel up there though

That... is absolutely one of my favorites. I wish Lauridsen had more for SSAA. Stroope and Snyder (she writes GREAT things for developing SSA) are mainstays in my library, too.

I was wondering that too. I suppose it will take years to undo the shiat that the Christian Nationalists have accomplished under Bush. Time to donate a little more to the ACLU...

/You can turn any thread into a politics thread

I love Stroope's music. Winter is probably the greatest song he's ever written but the man is such an farking prick. I guess it's true, great composers tend to be awful people.

While we're on the subject of generous Farkers, there was a guy like 6 months or so ago who had a sick kid and was asking for donations for some special treatment. Jason340 or something wasn't it? Whatever happened to that? Did he raise the money he needed? I couldn't donate myself (was in the process of moving 4 states away), but I remember keeping my fingers crossed that the kid made out alright.

Afrotaki 2009-03-22 04:20:36 PM
I gotta say, that was exceptionally good for a middle school SSA choir. Most high school SSA choirs sound way worse than that.

Have you done Weep No More by David Childs with them yet? I bet they'd sound really good on it.

/personal favorite is Polly Von, TTBB arrangement. I don't know who arranged it though...

His son died about 2 weeks ago without getting the treatment that had been promised.
