Piano thread?

I'm throwing in some Menahem Pressler. I'm probably biased, but he's absolutely superb, especially for 85. And a riot to watch play.

He plays a lot of notes really fast.

He's like the Yngwie Malmsteen of the piano.

Almost as bad as this:

Notes really fast do not a good player make.

Occasionally it threatens to sound like music, then flies off into rapid aimless noodling again. Bleah.

Kyosuke [TotalFark] 2009-03-22 11:10:34 AM
Meh. Keith Emerson could do that.

Yeah, I much prefer the tastefully subdued version that Harry Connick does on the "20" album. Not the best or most technically precise rendition, but I like its soul. This is the closest I could find to a link to it... (pops)

craigdamage 2009-03-22 11:26:41 AM
That guy fails on the piano.

Anything by Thelonious Monk trumps hell out of that.

Horowitz doing Chopin.

Really,ANYTHING with passion and or sincerity beats that.

Emotion will ALWAYS defeat tricky scale exercises.

Yikes!
Hell yes I better give notice to Jarrett.......or else he will scold the HELL out of me!

(in the middle of a performance no doubt)

I agree. Oscar Peterson could play fast, but he also had soul so it felt real.

I came here to say this.

Pentaxian

Am I missing the joke? He asked the genie for a "tiny pianist" and the girl wants to go home with him?

That seems to be not right.

Cosmic J 2009-03-22 01:44:00 PM
He probably asked for a 12" pianist, or something like that

I'd assume for a piano that size, he'd need a 12 inch pianist...

Getting the strip requires knowing the actual joke, in which a guy in a bar is showing off his 12" pianist, and explains that he got it because a genie misheard his wish. The specification of the size is the important part to take away from the original.

Lots of whiny "fast = bad" losers in this thread... this guy is definitely pretty high up there on the amazing scale.

So you ride the short bus and can't appreciate the complex harmony and incredible virtuosity. Plenty of people like the stride style and the twinkling keys...

this. if all you see/hear is fast 'noodling' and dont get how insanely complex and crazy this is, you absolutely fail at understanding music.

Please Refrain From Fronting is one of my favorite albums. It's good to hear that people outside the Twin Cities are familiar with Minnesota jazz groups featuring David King on drums.

I think David King is insanely awesome, but I'm also a huge fan of Nathan Wood from Kneebody. I think there's some really exciting stuff being made right now in this post-jazz / new-jazz genre: and what makes it so special is the way the drummers are stepping into the spotlight again and stealing the show. Bands like The Yellow Jackets (new window) are a huge influence on these groups, but they didn't have that monster drum sound. Wood and King bring this whole new vibe with their rock back-beats and BIG kick drum sound.

I can wait for Kneebody's new album. They're apparently working on it now.

exactly, since this guy has even more amazing technique he obviously has 'no soul'.

Kyosuke: Meh. Keith Emerson could do that.

on a semi related note, theres actually a video on youtube of KE and OP together, i swear to god.

Fast playing does not = bad. Some songs are just showoff pieces designed to be played as fast as possible. This is one. if he was playing the Sonata Pathetique that fast, i'd be raged, but he wasn't. Relax.

Oscar Peterson,Keith Jarrett, etc ., ALL say Tatum was the best AND fastest ever.

That was pretty damn impressive.
