Looks like AngryatWhipperSnappersBassist will finally be able to shut his complaint box for a few weeks, this is one of the five Metal bands that he has heard of. Before you get all frothy at the mouth, know that I think Iron Maiden is awesome and I have spent a few dollars to see them live.

My recs for this week:

Crom - The Restless King (new window) - Crom is actually just one man playing all the instruments himself (along with singing) and then mixing them to create his studio album. I usually hate Power Metal but his mixture of Viking and Power Metal is pretty awesome. This guy is quite talented and his 2008 release "Vengeance" is one of my favorites.

Svartsot - Jotunheimsfærden (new window, do not click if you don't like harsh vocals)- This band plays some incredible Folk Metal. I think that it's pretty cool that the lead singer can pull off the Death Metal vocals and Black Metal vocals pretty well in the same song. The musicianship is also top notch and if you listen to the rest of their album "Ravnenes Saga", there are actually some pretty catchy riffs in addition to the great folk instrumentation. It's a shame that they disbanded after only one album.

Forefather - Steadfast (new window) - I'm pretty sure I recommended these guys in a thread that went red, so sorry if you TFers have already listened to them. I thought Forefather's 2008 release, "Steadfast", was an instant classic. There is a decent mixture of clean and harsh vocals and I must say that the guitar work is phenomenal. I've listened to this album quite a few times since acquiring it and I am still finding new stuff to appreciate about it.

I like Svartsot a lot. I didnt know they disbanded though. That sucks. Though if you havent heard the new Finsterforst yet, I highly recommend you do. It is wonderful.

I actually haven't heard the new Finsterforst yet, I just have Weltenkraft, which I think is pretty awesome. The Pagan Knights tour was great (I just saw it on Thursday). Suidakra and Alestorm both played with great energy and they seemed to be flabbergasted that were so many Americans that knew their songs and cheered for them. I am not a big Tyr fan, but they certainly tore it up and made me appreciate them more.

Yeah Maiden :)

2 Mins to Midnight is an all time classic spent quite a few pennies on maiden over tha years.... In fact if I had never heard maiden before I don't think I would like metal music.

Up the Irons :)

Can't we get some Nevermore up in this biatch?

Nevermore - Enemies of Reality

W.A.S.P.'s Chainsaw Charlie. Yeah, I know they look like buttrock, but you owe yourself a listen to this song. It lives up to the name and is solid heavy metal.

Jelonek: Awesome peppy violin-metal. Fun for the whole family, even the ones who hate everything from thrash to prog.

Virgin Steele - The Fire God Power metal that doesn't have the stale power metal feel. Unique vocalist, carefully chosen riffs that stand up to repeated listens.

Demolition Hammer - Human Dissection Brutally aggressive thrash. Incredible drumming, vicious vocals, pounding riffs. Heavy stuff.

saintwrathchild 2009-03-22 11:27:20 AM
I've never been able to fully stomach Maiden. Something about their production values, especially on the early records, just...irks me. Maybe it's rawer than I like, maybe it's a generational thing (I'm 22), I don't know. The songwriting's there (Cradle of Filth's cover of "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is great, and I love "The Wickerman" and Dance of Death), I just don't like listening to their 80s work.

W.A.S.P.'s Chainsaw Charlie.

FTFM.

Bonus:

Flotsam & Jetsam Fun thrash with clean sounding vocals.

He plays (I assume) bass. Bass strings are thicker than guitar strings, therefore have more metal than most other instruments. He's also old. Therefore, he has (maybe) literally played a lot more metal than you. Actually, I have no idea what that means either, but he's right about having a point: he's old.

Don't get me wrong, Maiden is one of my favorite bands ever. (have all the albums except for the Blaze ones, plus both versions of Live After Death) But seriously, They have been on this thing, I believe, more than any other band. How about something different?

Quite true, actually, albeit I prefer to nod toward the Rock in Rio version for credit. Same goes for my preference of Maiden's own "Hallowed" recording. That synth intro from the Donnington live album is SO cheesy, and the studio original has all the same problems I mentioned earlier (too-thin production).

I love Falkenbach. As far as creating an atmosphere and making sure it permeates throughout the entire album, Falkenbach is a master. I find that if I put one of his albums in, I have to listen to the whole thing rather than a few songs.

I've given Equilibrium a couple chances in the past and they never really grew on me. I love Folk Metal so you would think that I would enjoy Equilibrium, but for some reason they never clicked. I think it might be due time for me to give them another shot...

Good tune from Maiden. I have to admit, even though I like Maiden, I think they're one of the most over-rated metal bands of all time.

You ever try to talk shiat about Maiden, or even mildly criticize them, in front of a person you just met who proclaims to like metal? They are on a pedestal for some reason, even amongst people who only passingly listen to metal.

Still, great tune from them. My personal favourite is Fear of the Dark. Or Running Silent, Running Deep (Run Silent, Run Deep?).

Oh, and if we haven't had a Children of Bodom thread yet, we definitely should. One of the best metal bands to really hit it big in the last decade.

M'eh, I'll get over it. If it matters, that is the ONLY song in all of CoF's catalog that I enjoy--which I think says more about Maiden than Cradle. I just think Cradle manages to fill the song in more while tightening it up than its writers' original recording (not necessarily on the vox, though, [the] Bruce has some incomparable pipes, and Dani is obnoxious on any take).

For a long time, I wondered why their lyrics were so goddamned awful, then I found out dude improvises them in the studio. What a farking joke. Just go instrumental. Between that and the excessive tough-guy bullshiat, I can't take them seriously at all.

Indeed. Kalmah > CoB

Here's what I would've contributed this week, if I'd gotten up before noon. I'm on a big sludge kick lately, and these guys put on one of the best shows I've ever seen when I saw them about 3 years ago (though I was drunk of my ass and OMFG they had a GONG on stage):

See, I wouldn't go so far as to call them overrated. Their influence is way too prominent these days (as they are themselves) to just write them off like that, and I'm pretty sure you can trace Melodic/Symphonic Anything directly back to their guitar work. Without them, I probably wouldn't get to enjoy Amon Amarth, Finntroll, or Dissection. But that's exactly it for me: they're an essential influence. They brought classical melody, history, and theatre to metal, but that's only a few of the ingredients that make up my favorite genre. In Pulp Fiction, Mia divides people as, what, Elvis or Johnny Cash? I do the same thing with Maiden and Black Sabbath, since one is so melodically-based and the other driven by thick rhythms--to wit, "Wrathchild," in my opinion, is one of Maiden's most Sabbath-y tracks.

They're not "overrated" at all, and they're on a pedestal for a reason. Maybe you had to be there circa 1980-1985 to know why.

They're not the greatest metal band of all-time or anything (though they certainly belong in any such conversation), but they were hugely influential, and played a style of heavy metal that was fairly pioneering in the face of an almost total lack of popular acknowledgement and radio play. When considering their massive influence, in what way could they be "overrated"?

/thinks a lot of people don't know what the word "overrated" actually means.

damn, i didn't even get up in time for the flamewar! I am disappointed. But seriously gays... maiden? i can turn on any clear channel classic rock station and hear this within 15 minutes. i'm not hating on em, everybody loves maiden, but... really?

anyways, here's some more palatable death/grind. more "mainstream" if you will. check em out...

Nasum - Scoop

Napalm Death - The Silence is Deafening

And in my weekly "Dave Witte is God" post: Burnt By The Sun - Forlani

Carcass - Corporeal Jigsaw Quandary, one of my favorite songs of all time. plus i'm wearing my retardedly-expensive carcass reunion tour hoodie right now. *snuggles*

Eazy-E - Neighborhood Sniper, just to round things off.

Cheers you farkers!

Kliffoth, BigSnatch, SPna15, y'all know i've been listening to this folk metal stuff you keep posting but i just can't get into it. when the mandolins and wind instruments kick in i just start seeing the video for "the safety song" start playing behind my eyes. not knocking it but... it's too damn folky.
/i guess that's why it's called folk metal.
//to each their own... or some shiat like that.
///would it be rude of me to re-iterate that kliffoth knows not the touch of a woman?
