When you get trampled to death going to see the pope, you get into Heaven no questions asked, right?

Why does anyone care what this ancient, ex-nazi youth, virgin (not counting altar boys) has to say???

I don't get it ... but then again I don't have invisible friends.

IIRC, there was another German who thought he belonged to a chosen people and strongly encouraged them to reproduce widely.

This is the first time I can think of Western media caring about Africans dying since LiveAid.

(Wow...my first insta-green.)

I find it ironic that the Pope's main message was to tell Africans to get their friends and neighbors to abandon silly mysticisms and beliefs in wizardry...so they can become Catholics.

It's official. Compared to condoms, the Pope has now killed more people in Africa.

Go Pope Go!

Two people out of tens of thousands were wearing condoms? That sounds like about the right ratio for condom use in Africa.

Then they'd be invisible companions. Friendship requires interaction.

In this context I'm pretty sure it's the African bit that's being made fun of, lots of dumbass leaders in Africa are against condoms; they're sent by White people to poison us. Poison like AIDS...erm, wait, no, worse. Yes.

Sinful condoms still save lives

I saw the article where he said condoms make the risk of AIDS worse, but it didn't say HOW.

Can anyone elaborate on WTF his logic was for that inane statement?

Nope. Herr Pointy Hat was the dummkopf who said something dumb about condoms this time around.

I'm quite sure some of this article is copy/pasted from the article posted earlier (the one on sorcery). The bit about him walking slowly and wearing white robes is exactly the same. Not that I am terribly bothered about making it a big deal at 04:30 but reading the two back to back gave me a tingly deja-vu feeling.

/Probably a simple explanation.

Off-hand I'd say it was the practice of "dry-sex" where African dudes reputedly prefer a dry pussy to a wet one, thereby increasing the damage done to vaginal walls and increasing the likelihood of a condom tearing. It's just what I heard though.

More than likely a wire report posted several places verbatim. AP affiliates do it all the time.

The REALLY ironic part is that the African sorcerers predicted this would happen.

The watered down, Vatican-approved version is that Condom use will increase promiscuity.

However, it's not uncommon for missionaries and even Church officials to claim that HIV can pass through a condom, or even claim that Condoms are actually CAUSING the disease (as in they're contaminated with HIV). It's the age-old story of creating irrational fear to scare people into complying with your dogma.

He is saying that condoms encourage promiscuity, which aids in the spread of aids.

Some people see condoms as a mechanism for allowing promiscuous sex without the threat of pregnancy....therefore condoms encourage t3h s3xin.

Aids spreads primarily via sex...therefore they believe that condoms encourage aids.

What they're saying is that if people abstained from sex with more than one partner over their lifetime, it would cut aids almost immediately.
They're correct, they're just being unreasonable.

It's only considered crazy when its someone elses wizardry. If its the stuff you believe in, its fine. Me? I only believe in Gandalf's wizardry. I just never understood how he could hang out with all those short doods and not want to kick them around like a football. Not even once! That's magic.

Yeah, but that ignorance usually has the same genesis as the other locals lunacies. If I had to bet on who influences those church workers more, the church that believes in evolution, and the locals who insist goats are witches, I know where my money is.

Only if you've been living under a rock for the last 10 years. You forget how to use Google?

WTF is this lazy "link or BS" crap all the time? People are so mentally slothful they can't even be bothered to fact check, so instead they rely on everyone else to find their info for them and thus shape their opinions entirely upon 2nd hand details. Isn't that how Religions get started?

While the Pope said that condoms aren't the solution, which is true (ie, they don't cure AIDS), he did go on to say that they can exacerbate the problem, which doesn't seem to be supported by any study that shows any alleged increase in promiscuity balances out the overwhelming effectiveness of the condoms. (ie, if the condoms prevent AIDS 90% of the time, for them to make matters worse, only 10% of your population can be having promiscuous sex. Any more, and even at 100%, you'll have fewer AIDS cases.)

MBK [TotalFark] 2009-03-22 12:55:43 AM
You know, I'm pretty anti-Religion, but I have to give props to Pope John Paul II. He made strides in trying to right the wrongs of the past. He prayed at a Mosque (pissing off a lot of his own followers). He apologized for basically everything Catholics did in the past.

He still stayed Conservative when it came to female priests, gay marriage (though he did say they deserve *EQUAL RIGHTS*), and the AIDS epidemic (Still bashed Condoms).

It seemed like he was getting around to trying to make Catholics more moderate, but he just didn't have enough time.

As for this guy? I don't like him one bit. No idea why. I guess John Paul looked like a friendly grandpa type to me (I grew up Catholic), and this new guy seems like a creepy uncle type.

Actually, it's "suspect until corroborated". The person making a claim has the burden of proof. here's how it works.

Person #1 makes unauthenticated claim.
Person #2, skeptic, says, "Put up or shut up."
-EITHER-
Person #1 then slinks off to the shadows or says something like, "Do your own research. What do I look like, your biatch? God."
-OR-
Person #1 provides corroboration.
Person #2 says, "Interesting. I have learned something new."

It's what prevents people from blindly accepting one person's statements as fact.

In Catholic school, in AMERICA, they tried to lie to us and tell us that HIV regularly passes through condoms (allegedly the condoms contained pores bigger than the virus). This bullshiat is definitely a Catholic thing and not just something that comes from African superstition.

This. It's not mysticism when we do it. Hell, it's not even a sign of being mentally disturbed, when we do it. But you'd better get lil' Jimmy to see the priest/shrink. He's too old to still have imaginary friends.
