I guess the breakdancing Yoda easter egg on the Attack of the Clones DVD doesn't count.

I got a little something in my eye watching Big Bird sing "It's Not Easy Being Green" at Jim Henson's memorial service. I'd never seen that before.

Rainbow Connection is depressing? Don't Want to Live on the Moon is depressing? Since when? I mean yeah they'll both make you bawl like a baby, but they're not depressing.

kermit's Hurt

Came here for this. Upset that it wasn't even in the first three. Further annoyed that it was referenced as NiN's, when Kermit's version is clearly a cover of Cash's cover of NiN's song.

Donald_McRonald: Muppets are an abomination.

You're going to want to go ahead and back out of the thread slowly. NO! Don't run. You'll just make them angrier.

ive watched the whole funeral. the worst part was frank oz's eulogy. he tells this awesome long story (and hilarious) about jim. and then just as hes wrapping it up he stops, pauses, and explodes into tears, and weeps "i miss my friend!" and walks off stage

Here you go, a cover of a Muppets song by someone you'd never expect (pops)

/takes a while to get to it, just after 2 minutes in

I'll have to check that when I get home. The last time I saw that on YouTube, the Henson Estate made them take it down.

When I was really little, I loved the various Big Bird movies. But in Follow That Bird there's a part where he sings - something about being a blue bird, as I recall - while in a cage, and child me always had to leave the room or I'd be bawling.

I've always loved this rendition. He's perfect for the song.

I remember watching Jim Henson's funeral on television when I was younger. It was the first real death I remember dealing with. Very sad.

/Thank you Kermit

yes, yes he is :)

I just love the lyrics to "I'm going to go back there someday." It's my favorite Muppet song, besides The Dream Factory.

I love puppetry. (Or muppetry) Gesture and posture are the game here. Big Bird's bowed head after "Green" spoke volumes.
In an age of digital whatever-you-want-to-see-you-see, I true true stage performances like puppets and muppets come back.

I didn't know that existed. Tight.

This
. I had similar thoughts when I saw the Wallace & Gromit link two rows below this one.

In an age where we're bored of CGI-based films because there's so many of them (imagine anyone taking you seriously if you were to predict that around when Toy Story came out!), nobody even considers returning to the older methods. If you watch an average episode of the Muppet Show, or Fraggle Rock, or even Sesame Street, the level of the craft is astounding.

The fact that articles (and threads) like this even exist is testament to the fact that they connected with us in such a meaningful way that even 20 years later people remember it. I was only born in '85 but I remember all of my Sesame Street and Muppet-related VHS tapes like I'd just watched them. Will they say the same about any of the stuff kids watch these days?

I HATED Follow that Bird when I was little for the exact reason you've stated. The sight of Big Bird in a cage, painted blue......it just scared the shiat out of me.

What about Grover's rendition of "C is for Cancer?"

FriarReb98 [TotalFark] 2009-03-22 08:56:24 AM
The first time I remember hearing "Time in a Bottle" by Jim Croce was on the Muppets. To this day it still kills me.

yourmotheristhespeedlimit 2009-03-22 09:05:42 AM
When my two year old can't sleep, we watch old Muppet Show clips on YouTube. I find it's a great way to expose him to good music.

They_no_kill_BakBak 2009-03-22 09:09:09 AM
Does "A Boy and his Frog" not count?
That will make anyone who's ever liked the muppets lose their shiat.

Dwight_Yeast 2009-03-22 10:08:55 AM
The Muppets cover of Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler" (from the Muppet Show) creeped me out as a kid. I think it was the gambler Muppet's spirit leaving his body that did it, as I remember having bad dreams based on that bit.

marxychick1 2009-03-22 11:05:35 AM
I thought I was the only one who sobbed my eyes out at "I Don't Want To Live On The Moon." My daughter has a nicely illustrated hardcover book with the lyrics that came with a cd of the song, and I can't even read it with her without bawling like a baby.

Metraxis 2009-03-22 11:13:13 AM
A most depressing Muppet song list that doesn't include Ernie's rendition of "Somebody Come and Play"? Preposterous. For extra wrist-cutting goodness, find the animated version.

Had to stop it after "stars in the sky"

Thanks for that. Never seen it before either.

Adding "I'm Going to Go Back There Someday," to your compliant, if you don't mide. Someone is confusing 'poignant' with 'depressing.'

SecretAgentWoman 2009-03-22 01:11:03 PM
I remember where I was when I heard Jim Henson died, like others remember where they were when Kennedy was shot, etc...

I burst into tears. Kermit died, and so did a big part of my childhood. I was 20.

agreed, it will. but doesn't fit, cause its by the talented Tom Smith, and not a Muppet.

"I Don't Want to Live on the Moon" probably stirred among the first feelings of romantic longing in my life. Still gets me.

uptonogood 2009-03-22 02:06:23 PM
youtube more than earns its keep by just keeping the footage of that funeral for all the world to see. being able to make a grown man break out in tears cos of the muppets singing - priceless.

Six_By_Nine 2009-03-22 02:14:40 PM
I can't believe that list doesn't include (I think it's called) "Just One Person". You know that one? The one where a room full of Muppets got the news that Jim Henson died and break out into that song?

I can't even think of that one without welling up.

theurge14 2009-03-22 02:21:51 PM
I miss the Muppet Show.

theurge14 2009-03-22 02:24:09 PM
And now for the happiest Muppet lyrics:

Yorn desh born, der ritt de gitt der gue,
Orn desh, dee born desh, de umn bork! bork! bork!

Samwise Gamgee 2009-03-22 02:35:09 PM
Count me in as one of the children who bawled to 'Dont Want to Live on the Moon'.

Not it's not. It's much more similar to NIN's version. It even has the original lyrics.

I don't mind at all :)
