What? What's wrong with sorcery? The act of finding a source.

Sourcer. One who sources.

Sourcee. One who is sourced.

I don't see how he would be against it. Monks get to add their Craft to their Strength, Inquisitors need to use spells too. Is their anyone associated with the Pope who doesn't use sorcery?

Fark the Pope.

/because a 9 year old got an abortion after she was raped, and the Vatican excommunicated her mother and the doctors

//also because the Vatican opposes the use of condoms in the fight against HIV/AIDS

chaosweaver 2009-03-21 09:47:51 PM
Yes yes, sorcery is bad, and condoms increase your risk for aids. is it just me, or has the church been getting crazier since john paul II died?

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2009-03-21 09:48:12 PM
"In today's Angola," he said at Mass in Luanda, "Catholics should offer the message of Christ to the many who live in the fear of spirits, of evil powers by whom they feel threatened."

belief in spirits is bad. Belief in a Patron Saint, however - that's totally cool!

And there's absolutely NOTHING in common with worship of the saints and those who worship ancestor spirits. nope. totally different, i'm sure.

Bestow upon me knowledge
Wizard-all knowing all wise
I want to rule this kingdom
Make sweet the breeze now defiled
Dethrone the evil princes iron fists
In velvet gloves of sin
Parade the grey robed monks
The vestal virgins, wheel the wyverns in
Let the ceremony
Consecrate the marriage
Let me be the protege
Of five magics
Give me alchemy
Wizardry
Sorcery
Thermatology
Electricity
Magic if you please
Master all of these
Bring him to his knees
I master five magics

Possessed with hellish torment
I master magics 5
Hunting the abyss lord
Only one will stay alive
He who lives by the sword
Will surely also die
He who lives in sin
Will surely live the lie

To a lot of Christians (not necessarily Catholics either by the way), the increasing popularity of things like Harry Potter and 'alternative religions'/spirituality is a serious concern. They see such things as tools of the devil and a very real spiritual danger.

Jsc810: //also because the Vatican opposes the use of condoms in the fight against HIV/AIDS

Maybe a continent already straining with population issues should stop rampantly procreating? I mean, condoms are effective, but they're not fool-proof against AIDS. I hate to be the "abstinence-only" guy in the thread, but if you're HIV+, and you don't have sex...it's much harder to spread the disease.

What about young-Earth creationism? Can we get a holy verdict on that as well? We might as well get all of the nutty obsolete concepts out of the way at once.

chaosweaver: has the church been getting crazier since john paul II died?

it's this. And until this pope kicks off, it's not likely to get better.

McManus_brothers: .it's much harder to spread the disease.

Problem is most people who have HIV in Africa don't know they have it.

theorellior: What about young-Earth creationism?

Mention that to a Catholic clergyman and he'll be calling up the nearest psych ward to get you committed.

McManus_brothers: Maybe a continent already straining with population issues should stop rampantly procreating?

That's the beauty of AIDS in Africa. It's a Malthusian solution to all that rampant procreating.

You realize, however, that if everyone in Africa started using a condom, even if you grant a 90% effectiveness for birth control and AIDS transmission, you'd be making real progress in limiting population growth and the spread of AIDS.

From what I can tell, most Christians really don't consider atheists to be that big of a threat.

1derful 2009-03-21 10:01:53 PM
I therefore take "magical weapons", pen, ink, and paper; I write
"incantations" --- these sentences --- in the "magical language" i.e. that which is understood by the people I wish to instruct; I call forth "spirits", such as printers, publishers, booksellers, and so forth, and constrain them to convey my message to those people. The composition and distribution of this book is thus an act of MAGICK by which I cause changes to take place in conformity with
my Will.

start marketing condoms using the face of the Pope on the packaging.

that'd pretty much kill the sex drive of most people. ok, maybe 5% of the population would get turned on but those are the same people who think abe vigoda is a sex god.

I think the Pope should make a point of mentioning that to people every chance he gets. Sometimes it takes repetition to make it sink in.

Continued belief in certain 'alternative religions' have very real physical consequences for some Africans. There was even an article on extensive Gambian witch-hunts on Fark yesterday or the day before.

I think the vast majority of Christians have no problem w/ Harry Potter or alternative religions. There is a fringe (Pat Robertson, Fred Phelps, etc.) that is rabidly pro-Christian, but most Christians are fine with those things, and they're simply trying to live their own life. It's anecdotal, but in my church (Catholic), out of roughly 1000 parishioners, maybe less than 50 are what could be described as hard-core.

Nah, back in the early 90's I hated RPG's, I was playing the hell out of Dune 2 at the time.

It does. Alas among the young earth creation types you've got lots who think the Pope is all sorts of stuff, so it wouldn't do any good for him to tell them, since they wouldn't listen anyways.

wiredmaverick: You taught me a new word today subby. Much appreciated.

phrenology?

/not subby, just curious
