Funny thing, when I drove thru there this morning at 5:45, it was open, save for one lane southbound. Lotsa lights though.

Guess the truck driver was driving one morning when the sun didn't shine.

No, but that was the other direction I pondered taking the headline. I chose old-school over obscure.

Moderately, these days. He's almost 30 years gone.

Goddammit. If you're driving a big rig, you go through the deer. There's less damage that way.

He's obscure to anyone under the age of 30, including me.

Not quite sir. Under 30, 24 in fact, know full well who Harry Chapin is.

If the front ones don't hit ya then the back ones will

Well i WAS going to come in here to snark about a nanny state over-reaction, but HF really is a scary mofo. Getting a splash of the aqueous variety on you is not a pretty way to die.

I will, however, ask how that community sustains itself. There is a slideshow on the site filled with pictures of 400 year old residents packed into a gym for the evacuation; it's like a social security black hole.

Adolf Oliver Nipples 2009-03-21 06:14:30 PM
Good effort, subby, but the meter was a little bit off and you didn't capture any of the redneck flavor because you didn't use any colloquialisms.

Still, it gets a 9.5 from the East German judge.

I'm no chemist, but is a quart of hydrofluoric acid dangerous enough for 5000 people to be evacuated?

My drivers ED Teacher would hit you in the back of the head if you even looked like you would swerve. He said slow down if you can , If not center them up. He had 2 girls that he had taught die in a wreck when they swerved to miss a dog.

StoneColdAtheist 2009-03-21 06:30:08 PM
Yep...NEVER swerve unless it's a human. That's not to say not to steer around them if you can, but only if it is totally controlled. Coworker of mine was killed when she swerved at the last instant to try to avoid running over a farking snake (another coworker survived, so we knew exactly what happened) and rolled the car.

Now, you Corvette guys need to modify that advice. A deer in the front seat with you will kill you until dead... ;^)

Russian_you: I'm no chemist, but is a quart of hydrofluoric acid dangerous enough for 5000 people to be evacuated?

Yes. The nastiest acid out there. Eats through glass and metal. Spill it on you and it will soak into your tissue until it gets to your bone -- then start dissolving that.

vicejay [TotalFark] 2009-03-21 06:35:03 PM
Actually, I wish they'd make this a part of the driver's ed course/videos. You should not swerve for anything smaller than a cow.

Not sure if I'd swerve for a human. A child, for sure.

mks113 2009-03-21 06:35:46 PM
And what's with this Harry Chapin bit?

I swerved to miss a deer = I've been driving too many hours and I fell asleep.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2009-03-21 06:45:12 PM
A quart of it doesn't justify evacuating a large area. A potential spill of a truckload might.

Jgok [TotalFark] 2009-03-21 06:53:02 PM
You're all missing the big picture...

There's a poll on that page for us to screw up!

StoneColdAtheist: Yep...NEVER swerve unless it's a human.

Sorry, I've seen what damage a deer can do to a car. I'll swerve and trust that my reflexes will keep me from wrecking, rather than purposely wrecking in order to avoid an accidental wreck.

Juniper Jupiter [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-03-21 07:11:30 PM
Hydrofluoric acid? Isn't that a component for Prozac?

You'd think exposure to that would make people very, very happy!

Before their lungs turned into swiss cheese, of course....

Yeah, I've seen it too. Do what you need to, but for most people a violent swerve to miss a small animal the risks outweigh the benefits. Large animals are more problematic, especially with low or sub-compact cars.

YMMV

N. Nobbs 2009-03-21 07:19:56 PM
If it's a choice between hitting a deer and swerving into a tree, hit the one which ISN'T anchored to the ground by several feet of roots.

Deer will generally bounce (or fly) away (depending on F = MA), but an oak tree ain't going nowhere!

justafarkingchef 2009-03-21 07:20:48 PM
I've hit 13 deer in 3.5 years driving truck in MI

berylman 2009-03-21 07:23:55 PM
Juniper Jupiter: Hydrofluoric acid? Isn't that a component for Prozac?

Prozac's tradename is Fluoxetine and the active molecule contains an aromatic trifluoromethyl group. They really have nothing in common other than presence of flourine; the flouride of hydroflouric acid behaves vastly different than the organic triflourotolyl in prozac.

Fuggin Bizzy: Goddammit. If you're anyone driving a big rig, you go through the deer. There's less damage that way.

I lived in Iowa for five years. More people are killed from swerving and hitting other cars, ditches, telephone poles, then from deer. Go straight and hope the deer dodges you.

Cars are so quiet now, that you should probably give your horn a honk going around blind curves. One some highways, that means doing it every 30-60 seconds. People laugh but I've never hit a deer.

hit the deer. The insurance adjuster will see the hair, and your claim will be taken care of quickly with no change to your rates.

swerve to "avoid a deer"... rates go up, you might be personally on the hook to replace the utility pole or guide rail.

Killed by an off road hazard and then killed again by a deer? That's a terrible way to go (twice)...

Hydrofluoric acid is nothing to mess with. It's extremely toxic and frankly if the tank ruptured it would be all over the news.
