One of the great Guido details you never see anymore is the guys with pants so tight they had to carry their wallet, car keys and Marlboro Lights around in their hand.

Maybe it's because I live where I do, but damn it I like the Camaro as a vehicle.

I doubt I would want one as my primary car, but they sure are fun to drive.

Good riddance.

GM is on the precipice. Rather than leap off the edge with a 570hp retard-mobile, they need to inch back down by building attractive, reliable cars with superb handling and good fuel economy. This doesn't mean WHAAARGARBL PrIUs VoLt HiPpIEs WHAAARGARBL. It means beating Toyota, Honda and VW at their own game.

$50 million to put "Z" a badge on a car , and people wonder why this company is failing.

Did they spend $50 million to put the Z24 badge on the cavalier?
The SS badge on the Cobolt?

Saturns were junk. Go 25,000 miles and literally start falling apart. The fit and trim was terribly designed and they would go through transmissions like beer through a farker. The windshield seals would start leaking at 30 thou and any electronics under the dashboard would fry out as a result.

I dont know anyone who bought one and kept it past 40,000 miles. They became total rattletraps at 30 thou.

If GM wants to survive as an American automobile manufacturer, they will address the quality of the cars they build, and stop selling pickup trucks with multizone climate control and all the many whistles and bells that rendered them unusable as trucks and completely unaffordable to the people that just need a goddamn pickup truck. Turning a truck into a pimpsled was the most idiotic move they made. Building cars where all the former "luxuries" became standard equipment was their downfall.

Time to go back to the basics: reliability, ease of repair and quality construction. They dominated the market for 50 years on that philosophy. They went to shiat since 1990 or so.

Glitchwerks 2009-03-21 03:40:00 PM
I'm not exactly sure that entrusting 570 HP in a RWD vehicle with typical American car handling is such a brilliant idea anyway.

I'm pretty sure Darwin is awfully disappointed, as Camaros and Mustangs have been his weapon of choice for decades in the preening of American youth for the betterment of our society.

Yes, and yes...

In the race to be the biggest car company, they forgot about being the best car company. The 80's flood of high quality imports were an alarm going off, executives at GM kept hitting the snooze bar and rolling over. Now it is noon and the boss is calling, you better answer the phone because it could mean your job.

I would disagree with this. They certainly had SOME issues, but they aren't as bad as you suggest. My parents have a '97 SC2 with a touch over 150k and an '04 VUE with about 60k on it. Both cars still run fine.

I think that the sub-genre of guido that Fark most often refers to isn't upset about the Camaro. I'm pretty sure that those guys are all driving entry-level BMW and Mercedes sedans, or SUVs.

The cheese dick from Fast Times...that's your Camaro.

The Camaro as a muscle car died a long, long time ago. It's too bad. I had an old Z28 as a kid in the early 90's, and hated it. To me it was synonymous with trashy bullshiat. But I'd kill to have one (a 70's model) now. That is one raunchy, undisciplined, sexy machine. You know, a muscle car.

Only towards the end of the model run. Originally the IROC was a separate model from the Z28; at various points in the production run you could buy an IROC, a Z28, or an IROC-Z28.

You do realize it was the exact same car as the Camaro with a different front end, right?

Plus the 6.6L in those cars was made by Oldsmobile and had about 185 horsepower. It was a total piece of shiat.

fernanernie: The 80's flood of high quality imports were an alarm going off, executives at GM kept hitting the snooze bar and rolling over

Though unrelated, this is also why companies like Circuit City fail. Note to successful interests: Do not rest on your laurels and most definitely do not write off modest successes from competitors as a fluke. In terms of GM...you idiots had decades to shore up your manufacturing to meet the standards of the Japanese. What, did you think that you were going to ride the post-war, buy-American-no-matter-what crowd was a good long term strategy?

The SS will have a V* with about 410hp, the Z28 was supposed to have a de-tuned supercharged V8 with roughly ~545hp (the same engine that's in the Caddy CTS-V, a de-tuned version of the Corvette ZR1 that has over 600hp--the Corvette that lists for over $110,000 IF you could buy one without the dealer mark-up of $40,000, IF you could find one)

now do you understand why people are upset that it died?
