My roommate is a blues singer/harpist and walking blues encyclopedia, and has never heard of this guy.

Now I have to find a copy of Chicken Fat and see what's up...

RIP, bluesman.

"Honeyboy" is almost 95 and still touring! There is an interview from a few years ago halfway down this page. Better get out and show some respect for these cats while we still can!

Mel was a funky, funky man on the guitar and the organ.
I used to see him play every week down here in Austin at Antone's when it was actually a blues club.

Do yourself a favor and track down some of his solo records.

We just lost Bowling Green John Cephas too, he passed away on March 4.

Wow, this guy played at my cousin's wedding in Kitchener at the end of January, along with Miss Angel. He was lugging around an oxygen tank, but he still sang pretty well. At the time, I didn't even know he was famous, but I did some reading up on him, and now I'm kind of honoured to have been there for it.

Yeah I first heard of him last year through some friends, they pulled me out to the Boathouse in Kitchener where he played every Sunday. He had been on oxygen for years due to chronic emphysema from years of smoking and playing smoke filled clubs.

I ended up finding out about his history and wow, he's been on almost hundreds of records, played with all of the greats.

I was hoping to see him a few weeks ago but he was not playing and now I know it was because he had just gone to the hospital with a collpased lung.

Friendly as anything, and his wife Miss Angel just a great woman.

I feel pretty honored for being able to see him a few times over the past year.

Only got to see him once at the Boathouse, but a friend of mine has talked about seeing him regularly, about 10 years ago now.

"Can we buy you a drink, Mel?"
"No thanks, I roll all my drinks."
