London-based Survival International said in a statement the film is "faked, that the earth covering the children's faces is actually chocolate cake, and that the film's claim that infanticide among Brazilian Indians is widespread is false."

WTF!? bibblibblibble

MMMMMMMM...chocolate death

penthesilea [TotalFark] 2009-03-21 01:20:28 PM
It was cake....not death.

I'm sorry.

I cannot stand for the abuses against chocolate cake.

Ever notice how for people following a religion with "Thou shalt not bear false witness" as one of its basic tenets, fundamentalists seem to have real issues with honesty?

jake_lex: Ever notice how for people following a religion with "Thou shalt not bear false witness" as one of its basic tenets, fundamentalists seem to have real issues with honesty?

That's because their (fundamentalists) belief system is logically incoherent. How can they be expected to be honest, when honestly fails to support their beliefs?

taurusowner 2009-03-21 02:47:30 PM
Well if I could understand them on the tech support line, maybe there wouldn't be so much hatred.

Except that they acknowledge that it's a re-enactment.

And there's also this quote from the guy who's attacking them:

"The infanticide is not being explained; it's being taken out of context."

Reeeeeally, now? How the hell do you take infanticide out of farking context???? In which "context" is burying kids alive okay?

Perhaps it is burying them alive which is the context. Perhaps they are dying children being given euthanasia and saving hundreds of man-hours of pain, suffering, and mourning and conserving scarce resources.

But not that, because that would, well -- make sense, wouldn't it?

You have no food and allowing the kids to live will result in the death of more than just the kid?

No need to stir up my hatred of the Indians. I'm a White Sox fan!

Oops, wrong indians.

spectrek 2009-03-21 02:54:01 PM
This was something I heard about forty years ago, in Anthropology class: I'd thought those Amazonians would have quit the practice by now.

ElLoco 2009-03-21 02:54:54 PM
I was hoping this would be about some new war on useless tech support. I could really get behind that.

/disappointed

PersistantRash 2009-03-21 02:55:37 PM
nobody would ever waste THAT much chocolate cake when you can pretend to bury children in real dirt just as easily

kyoryu [TotalFark] 2009-03-21 02:57:27 PM
FTFA (and not a quote from the folks that made the film).

Infanticide is practiced by some tribes in the Amazon region, sometimes on disabled children, often based on the belief that children who take their last breath above land will come back to haunt a community. But Survival says it is rare and becoming rarer as healthcare access improves.

enjoi 2009-03-21 02:57:42 PM
the video is a fake, it's purported to be real, that's what it's being presented as, but it is a "reenactment", and there is no documentation that the incident actually took place.

indigenous rights are a necessity, and christian organizations are doing more harm than good in the lives of those they are trying to help.

atomicmask 2009-03-21 02:57:56 PM
I despise missionaries, they are lying scum who only ruin cultures and people and spread a horde of stupidity around the globe. Missionaries should be shot on sight.

Saying that, some cultures are just not worth saving either. Most of these back jungle savages have the most horrible beliefs and practices on the planet and deserve to be wiped out.

Socialized medicine will destroy the classic Amazonian family tradition of burying unwanted children alive.

Yeah.....I'm at a complete loss at how to even begin to addresses that statement.

So, fake but accurate.

I don't see where the entirety of the United States is said to be represented in the headline, unless you read it such a way. One could easily read this to say that a group comprised of Americans are stirring hatred. Hasty generalizations are fallacies but so are false equivocations.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the final solution.

The missionary group could have handled this better (perhaps identifying the video as fiction at the beginning), but let's not vilify them for them message that they're trying to get out. This sort of infanticide is still happening and needs to stop. What's worse: the infanticide by the native tribes, or the poor P.R. from the Christian group?

I suspect to many farkers, it's always the Christians that are worse than anything else, of course.

Subby wrote "Americans said to be "stirring up hatred against the Indians." This is not a repeat from the 1800s."

Not a "group of Americans" or "some Americans". Just Americans as a whole. Which is why it fits in with his/her "This is not a repeat from the 1800s" reference.

Farkers consider that a joke. And of course I mean "some" farkers, or "a group of" farkers, because inevitably there are "other" farkers who are hopeless, humorless literalists.

Smoked for about 4 hours, using apple wood.... mesquite easily overpowers the delicate flavor of the baby.

taurusowner: Well if I could understand them on the tech support line, maybe there wouldn't be so much hatred.

That's one of my pet peeves - calling some company's tech support line and getting some guy with a heavy Indian accent starting the conversation off with "Hi, my name is Biff, how can I assist you?"

Come on, *you* know you're Indian, and *I* know you're Indian - don't embarrass us both by using some American name and pretending you're not sitting at a phone bank in New Delhi.

Why is it ok for indians to walk around nude, but when I do it I always get arrested?
