Just like Disney. You show up and the rides you were looking foward to are closed for maintenance.

Did the Iraqis throw roses at their feet and ask them to thank Lockheed Martin for giving their house a sunroof?

I'd also like to add, thank God the first tourists aren't american. Then again, I didn't rtfa. (all the way through.)

Worn torn countries are fun to visit. 3 Years ago I drove through the Krajina region of Croatia, where the fighting took place in the early 90s. Mind you, I normally just stay on the coast and never travel inland. There are towns where every house is burnt to the ground and mine field signs are everywhere. It shows you what war is really like. Every America should have to go through a war torn country. Then maybe they wouldn't bomb other places without thinking about what they're actually doing.

When the American people finally have some interest in culture of Iraq the war won't seem so disingenuous.

right we'll just ake those cultural aspects steal them and portray them as our own. It's the american way

Your dig to the Americans who did their best to prevent war in the Balkans, masked as faux concern about war in general, might seem a bit less ridiculous if it had been the Americans that bombed Croatia.

There's a special place in Hell for the likes of you.

This. They should also have to go through a real (say Indian or Brazilian) slum to learn what real poverty and deprivation looks like. For that matter, they should just have a walk around an arbitrary Indian or Chinese city (not the tourist areas, and not with a tour group) to see how most of the world lives.

It really helps put the whole pop-culture "you're not successful unless you live in Manhattan or own a 5000-square-foot suburban mansion" mentality in perspective.

FTFA: "But I think maybe a few more of the sites need to be open to tourists because if tourists are going to come to Iraq, there has got to be things for them to see when they get here."

I hate that kind of tourist. I don't go to see some monument, which will always be underwhelming, I go to check out the atmosphere and the living culture of a place. Listening to Iraqis tell their stories, if you could get across the language barrier, would be way more interesting than seeing some tacky Saddam-era monument or some looted ruins from some third-rate dynasty.

Who the hell says that? Succeess is an extrememly relative term. You don't have to live in India to be poor, and you don't have to have a seven digit checking account to be rich. Someone with a loving wife and healthy kids who's happy to go to chuch on Sunday is richer than Bernie Madoff.

Most of the world lives in perpetual torment because of a lack of either Christianity or Democracy. Neither this religion nor this system of government has much room for suffering or mistreatment.

All the problems with starvation and genocide and war come from either moslems, or atheists operating under the banner of socialism.

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say here. FYI, Americans bombed parts of Croatia, but it was to assist the Croatian Army. I certainly don't blame America for the war in the Balkans. I think they handled it fairly well for something that had nothing to do with them.

My dig was at the fact that most Americans think war is a glorious venture where metal music plays to pump you up as you kill evil. In reality it's a pretty horrifying experience.

I walked around Kingston, that was so depressing. One thing I noticed is that people weren't sitting around moping. Despite not having much they were out living some sort of life.

Most interesting trip over that way...Oman. Spent some time surfing with some friends from Dubai, it was apparent that they'd not see a lot of yanks. Had fun, people were nice.

That admission says less about your location or vocation, and more about your personal preferences. I've always found the prostitutes in Indiana to be the top of society. Or the daughters of those at the top, at least.
