VeryRarely: I thought Florida had alligators.

So did I, but evidently there's a small species of Cuban crocodile found in the gulf.

They should just put that poor beast out of his misery...

It sounds like a bad horror flick: we tried to help it, but now it has decided to go on a vendetta against all humans, trying to find the one who smashed its face to start with - only this time, he's reinforced with metal!

I'm thinking they should have put him on the table for dinner, then on their boots later.

I can't wait for the made-for-TV movie to come out on SciFi!

Every time I see SYFY, I think of Sylvester the Cat trying to pronounce it.

In the lower everglades, between the mainland and the Keys is a bad-assed species of saltwater crocodile. They get big.

trifoldhat 2009-03-21 12:04:20 PM
When reptiles become emaciated, they start loosing bone mass. I wonder what chance of healing this guy has, unless they are force feeding him.

Jeez, let the poor guy go. The rainbow bridge needs things slithering under it, too.

He may be a bad ass croc, but he isn't the "baddest".

That title belongs to Gustave until further notice.

Vets in the Keys do some pretty incredible work. One of my dad's oldest friends replaced a pelican's broken beak with a filed-down toilet seat lid.

Just what we need, a steel-jawed invertebrate, with a deep-seated hate of humanity. They just need to add hydraulics to its jaws, and a computerized brain, and they have an awesome killing machine. This will provide the federal government the necessary opportunity to impose martial law in Florida.

He's opened his mouth for the first time in three months. And true about Keys vets -- they do some incredible healing shiat down here for critters you never even heard of.

camelman, you got it. Alligators are the stoners of the group. Live and let live. Crocs are the tweekers. My theory is that any animal large enough to kill a human will do so. For all of you Caturday lovers, try to pet a Bengal tiger.
Harsh, I know. Cats don't like you, they put up with you.
End of rant, I raise fleas.... and let's not talk about rampaging elephants...

I think it's the only place on earth there are both. Maybe I saw that on a Trivial Pursuit card though.

Well, except for zoos. They'd probably also have both.

Keys dude 2009-03-21 12:49:06 PM
Carniemechanic is correct.

Key Largo, northernmost section of the Keys, is home to the Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge -- created, obviously, for the crocs. They were nearly extinct when it was established.

Keys dude 2009-03-21 12:52:17 PM

My bad -- the subspecies AMERICAN crocodiles, not all crocodiles.

While all members of the order can be termed 'crocodiles' I strongly suspect this is an alligator, which is actually 'native' to Florida. (I can't tell the difference by looking, but the article says it's 'native' and alligators are the only crodilia native to North America.)

Trickinosis 2009-03-21 01:22:48 PM
for some reason, I have this overwhelming sense of empathy for this croc.

Man, it must've been in serious pain telling them that with a broken jaw.

I'm willing to bet they have an esophagostomy tube or something in him for feeding.

In other news, I've met Doug Mader (though probably most exotic vets have) and he's a cool guy so I'm getting a kick out of this article. I wish him luck with Robocroc!

I think your thinking of the Family Crocodilyda(sp?), which does include Alligators, Crocodiles, caiman, etc.....
And as far as crocodiles go, yes there are crocdiles in Florida, they're just a bit smaller.

The American crocodile (new window)

Premature Defenestration 2009-03-21 01:55:44 PM
Robocroc. A reptile barely alive. Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic crocodile. Robocroc will be that crocodile. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.

GimpyNip 2009-03-21 01:57:44 PM
What inspires more fear and would win in a battle given they were roughly the same weight...a croc or an alligator?
