It's still Frank's world. We just live in it.

One of my major regrets is never being able to see Frank live. I'm 22 and never really had a chance.

I grew up in an heavily-Italian town and heard him all the time, but never paid much attention to him; by the time I could appreciate him (mid 80's) the man and legend were alive but the voice was just a shell of its former self.

There are some good dvds of his concerts-secondspin has a good number of them:

Same here man. I'm 28 and didn't really get into him until I went to Vegas when I was around 17. Feel the Same way about Dean Martin.

Saw him once, many hears ago for $25 from about the 15th row.

Buddy Rich was touring with him.

This song/music is one of the touch stones of human culture, and yeah, I'm being serious.

The stuff that I listen to all the time - blues, reggae, ambient, brazillian jazz and bossa nova - really just doesn't compare to this (although the brazillian stuff comes close).

If you get the chance see Tony Bennett before he stops touring or Frank, Jr.

Holy shiat, fark - that's not even the best rendition of that song that was recorded that night!

At that same show, Sammy Davis Jr did the same number in such a superior fashion that ONLY Frank Sinatra would have the balls to come out and perform it again.

Granted - Sammy didn't utilize that amazing orchestra, singing with only a percussive accompaniment, but man - you wanna hear some singing, that's the version to check out.

I'm a huge Sinatra fan, but FAS was off his game that night.

AND you have to see Sammy's version of "One for my Baby (and one more for the road)" from that same show, done in the style of every major singer of the era. It's hilarious and beautiful.

For those of you who regret not paying attention to the music your parents liked, definitely give this a listen:

It always gets me when the orchestra comes in.

I've a recording from a different night on that tour, always enjoyed it. The earlier threads with Sam & Dave backed by Booker T & The MGs, and Armstrong/Teagarden made me think of this one again--pairings of greats.

Look, I understand the importance of this music, but can we start submitting/can the mods start greenlighting some contemporary jazz? I think the reason a lot of people dislike jazz is that they confuse it with smooth jazz (barf!) or think it's just all louie armstrong and frank sinatra (not barf!). I think a lot of people could be turned on to jazz if they listened to contemporary jazz musicians like courtney pine, joshua redman, john zorn, cuong vu, tribal tech (and the solo acts of all the members). Music that resonates closer to them and what they already listen to, instead of just saying "you don't appreciate good music." Like I said, I don't have a problem with louie armstrong and frank sinatra, they're ok in my book.

1) So, submit some. If it's good it will out, sooner or later. Or why not post some links in this thread? I, for one, would take a recommendation seriously, given the good luck I've had following Farkers' recommendations to date.

2) You have to be able to appreciate Reubens in order to get van Gogh. I suspect the same type of thing is true with jazz. Again, it would be helpful to have some recommendations and a bit of a guide, perhaps by way of some of the more accessible pieces.

Jazz - retard music. It's scientific fact

Sinatra and Basie went together like ham and eggs. My ex-wife married me because on our first date I did my usual rant on why Frank Sinatra was important. Turned out she was a huge fan.

While Sinatra certainly performed with jazz artists he was not a jazz singer, a common belief. He was a straight-up pop singer. Bing Crosby was far more jazzy and had better swing in his voice, which Sinatra acknowledged.

I liked the part in the video when Sinatra sat down during the break, harkening back to his big band days when the singer was just another instrument in the band and did sit except while singing. Artists like Sinatra and the incomparable Doris Day ended that era and made the singer the star of the show.

I have the Sinatra Live at the Sands 1966 double CD. Quincy Jones arranged and conducted the Count Basie Orchestra and the music and singing is sublime but I find the inter-song patter and the "Sinatra monologues" hilariously UNcool and of such a different style and era than other popular music from 1966.

Love the voice and the delivery but the persona doesn't work for me.

Red Hot + Blue was a pretty good compliation. I loved the Debbie Harry/Iggy Pop "Well did you Evah?" and David Byrne's "Don't Fence Me In." k.d. Lang's "So In Love" is absolutely epic.
