Good. I hope that a legislature passing this bill will mean that people won't be as hard core against the action.

I've always been for gay marraige, as long as it was passed either by reforendum or by a vote in the legislature. I have only opposed the courts getting involved.

ruthlessliberal 2009-03-20 07:53:19 PM
Sweet. Hopefully Maine will be next. We've got a bill that will pass both houses, and we have a Democratic Governor. He has said he opposes same-sex marriage, but hasn't ruled out signing the bill and has been supportive of other gay rights in the past.

/The Northern New England gay-marriage race is on!

No, a human being ashamed of America. Its a very good thing. Shame begins positive change. If everybody was blindly proud of ever frkked up thing America did, we'd still have slaves you dumbass.

Kill yourself.

Not so fast, Subby. It still has to be approved by the full state Senate and signed by a governor who has stated he opposes it and is giving mixed signals on whether or not he will veto the bill.

I'd like to see full marriage in Vermont, but the stakes aren't quite as high, since it has had civil unions for nearly a decade now and is kind of a unique political culture in America that tends to be ignored a little more other states, like California. Even though Vermont is pretty much equally awesome, though smaller in size. I love Vermont.

/hope the governor considers the impact of gay tourism and competing gay marriage destinations close by in deciding on vetoing this bill - Vermont could get some of the gay tourism dollars currently going to Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, and of course, Canada.

Why else would one oppose it?

John turned to Larry, sliding the cigarette between his lips to his fingers while feeling the stubble of his chin collect the heated dew of the moment.

"Will I see you again do you think?" he quipped.

"I doubt it," said Larry "We'll always have the Minneapolis Airport's men's room" After a moment, "You are beautiful you know."

John glanced up at the florescent lights and gave a coy yet warming smile before departing.

Had Larry's career in government been worth anything at all? A Senator, and yet, he can't stop thinking of man like John - how wonderful it would be to settle down in a cabin in Vermont. But it wasn't to be.

Idaho was so cold this time of year. His flight was leaving soon.

There are SOME opposed to gay marriage, mind you, it's a very small percentage, negligible in public forum, who believe gay couples should have the same rights as heterosexuals, but without the name marriage for any number of reasons, that really just boil down to calling a violin a fiddle because it's application is slightly different.

I'm horrible with metaphor, just go with it.

I feel sorry for you: In this vast world with infinite subtle nuance and a billion shades in every color, you mindlessly demand that everything be black and white. It hurts me to think how much suffering your brand of willful ignorance causes.

That's a reasonable position and i'm glad that you are pro gay marriage but dont you think that it's the courts responsibility to strike down laws that are unconstitutional and don't give every one the same rights?

FTFA:
Campbell said marriage is an improvement over civil unions both substantively and as a matter of wording.

On the first score, he said, marriage is more widely legally recognized than civil unions. If a couple from Vermont got into an accident in Kansas, a spouse likely would have a stronger claim to hospital visitation rights if they were married than if they were in a civil union, he said.

Semantically, Campbell argued that if there were no difference, opponents of same-sex marriage would not be so vehement that the term marriage should apply only to heterosexual unions. "Children should be able to say to their friends that their parents are married, and not have to explain what a civil union is," he added.

Sir Daniel Fortesque: Wonderful, now can Vermont officially be a part of Canada?

We'd take 'em. And their delicious ice cream and cheese. But I don't think they'd agree to give up their guns or get along well with the whole monarchy concept, because in the end they are too American to really be Canadian, even if a quarter of them are French-Canadians originally. They have been inextricably altered by American republican political philosophy. Being Canadian probably sounds nice to the liberals of Vermont but the political culture they've been steeped in all of their lives is still totally different.

Also they might resist draconian Canadian rules on pronouncing place-names like Montpelier properly, because we would totally enact some. For the love of jebus it's Mon-pell-ee-yay, not Mawnt-pee-lee-er. ARG! Every single Canadian who speaks French is immediately going to lose their sh*t when they encounter the Vermont pronunciations of originally French words, and try to get them to change it to the proper way. It would be war, and Vermont would just re-secede back to America to be done with it.

I'll make a prediction: Assuming the feds stay out of the issue, by 2020, at least 30 (maybe 35) of these Yoo-nited States will allow gay marriage, "or the equivalent." The holdouts will be essentially those states that went Republican in the recent election. The Deep South and the Ignorant West. Those states will then lose most of their homosexual population, which will probably please the preachers, . . . but not the politicians when the 2020 census is enumerated.

Hmm... separate but equal. Sounds okay to me.

Wait a minute...

To say that there is any legitimate argument against gay marriage is, in and of itself, homophobic. It is NEVER okay to deny rights to the minority simply because the majority has enough votes.

IronTony 2009-03-20 08:55:29 PM
Sirsky

I never said these particular people wanted to deny the rights of gays. You could liken them more to grammar nazis. Annoying little nitpicking buggers, but not ignorant or even hateful. Alliteration and assonance are basically the same thing, but these nuisances would scream and shout and stamp "YOU'RE WRONG!".

I do see your point, and agree with the parallels between the gay rights movement and civil rights movement, but I was simply saying that SOME of these people aren't homophobic.

jpo2269 2009-03-20 09:04:09 PM
I think some here are a little confused by the idea of "the majority rules, with minority rights."

If Vermont wants to pass a law allowing same sex marriage, well, that is Vermont's right to do. Unfortunately, that will lead to jane and joy doe moving to a different state and trying to sue for the same recognition as they had in Vermont.

Well, I have no problem for you to do what is fine in Vermont, but you have no right to spread that to states that don't share your view.
