Gray noted this in her pointed response: "I have grave concerns on your ability to pass the AIMS language test," she wrote.

Sometimes I think elected officials are the dumbest people on the frickin' planet. At least the kid has a point - poor writing skills in a litter complaining about cuts in education funding rather makes the point. But the Senator? weapons grade stupid.

Bildo [TotalFark] 2009-03-20 01:41:33 PM
Special needs? Sorry, but that term is meaningless. We all have "special needs." (Mine involves blonds and beer, but I digress).

Is the child mentally retarded, ADD, ADHD, or just ugly? Is he/she learning disabled? If so, in what way?

P.C. language is pathetic, and all who use it should die in a fire.

Aaaaand gutterball.

SchlingFocker [TotalFark] 2009-03-20 01:54:11 PM
"Special needs" lost its meaning around the time that the special needs class in school went from three members (a Downer, a kid with palsy, and a kid who sat there drooling and flicking his groin) to a class of thirty that's comprised mostly of kids who just have shiatty parents and don't feel like doing any work.

Most of the time nowadays, picking on a special needs kid doesn't mean you're picking on a retard.

You're just picking on a stupid person, which needs to happen more often, IMO.

"By your poorly written e-mail, your example tells me that all the money we have spent on your education shows a lack of learning on your part."

The money shows a lack of learning? What does that even mean? The student isn't the only one needing more education.

The student did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

When reached the next day, the student responded, "Ice Cream!"

Uchiha_Cycliste [TotalFark] 2009-03-20 02:07:57 PM
The senator eagerly seized the opportunity to show that (after a lifetime of waiting) here was someone she was smarter than. To hell with the message, It was time to look down on someone. I'll bet after she wrote the response she had a glass of champagne.

The senator's email: "Why didn't you take to (sic) time to write an e-mail with the proper punctuation? By your poorly written e-mail, your example tells me that all the money we have spent on your education shows a lack of learning on your part."

Fabulous. Looks like the senator could paid a bit more attention in school herself. The first sentence has the obvious error in it, but the construction of the second is so atrocious, I don't even know where to start...

Well that's kind of the point - if you don't know, it's the catch-all term. Special Needs can fit any non-mainstreamed student, from MR students all the way to children in gifted programs. It's a useful sum-up word.

One thing I got out of my Education program in college: Labels are not good. Why do you need to know if the kid is MR, ADD or what ever? To know how to respond? How to treat them? A student is a student, and they all deserve the same dignity and respect, regardless of their abilities or their challenges. I do my damnedest to be that way with all people.

That's like a fire victim going to her and oozing all over her carpet from the wounds because she had cut the budget for the fire department and complaining that if the victim knew how to take care of themselves this wouldn't be a problem.

what movie was it where the teacher criticized the student's essay and the kid killed herself/himself?

saintstryfe 2009-03-20 02:48:55 PM
BTW, this trend of kids writing in support of their own education, I love it. I want to see kids get engaged actively in the political process and self-advocating. one big problem I have with a lot of education lobbying is it's done by teacher's unions or by people selling products (IE test makers). If the people who have an honest-to-god stake, the students and the parents, got into it, the results would be better.

I don't see party affiliation mentioned anywhere. Well, that almost always means something in particular...let's check.

I understand special needs kids...so I'm getting a kick out of some of these replies....

How you ask... My company put me in charge of handing out the vanilla/choco swirl ice cream cups at the local Special Olympics...three years in a row.
WITH, mind you, the proper associated double ended wooden stick.

So I've got that going for me....which is nice.

If this biatch gets re elected, the FAIL will also be apparent in her constituents.

Another thing. Politicians in general do very, very little to articulate the reasoning behind any policy change as a whole.

There are so many mediums out there... blogs, twitter, An article in the local papers or something.

Her political career needs to crash and burn for this.

I expect at this point to see Republicans try to kick the people who are down at every point they can. Telling a special needs student that his letter wasn't written well enough is a fine, fine example.

I don't blame the senator for losing her cool with the original email. Anytime there is even a hint of education budget reduction, school boards and parents go on the warpath.

In our town, the mayor is calling for wage freezes for all town employees. Not a peep from any other department, but the director of the school district is treating it like an attack on the children.

The senator probably has been inundated with complaints from parents, teachers and kids (who were put up to writing by the parents and teachers).
