If she had to ditch her committee meeting just to show up to a vote that she did not properly prepare for and/or was not the deciding vote, she's doing it wrong.. FAIL.

Hmmmm, you're absolutely right. The rich and full mention of that incident clearly indicates that she didn't read a single sentence of the presentation of the bill or whatever was on the agenda for that voting session.

And you should never, ever vote to prove a point, and only when you are fairly certain that you'll end up on the winning side.

You know, with your attitude and projection, you could do well in Washington.

That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it!

Whether you agree with her politics or not, she:

1) Represents her very conservative constituents as they would have her do, and

2) She doesn't "phone in the job" by skipping out on votes...in spite of the droves of her peers who do so consistently

I don't agree with her politics, but I very much applaud her work ethic and commitment to public office.

She's over-rated.

She might be god-awful. But I've set the bar pretty low for public servants being considered "good", and the fact that she consistently attempts to do her job is more then I can say for many.

This is akin to a special-ed student getting an award for perfect attendance. It doesn't really matter if you make 4,000 consecutive votes; make 4,000,000 and the situation would still be that you've ruined the state economy, caused an entire generation to leave the state and made those that stay well aware that if they don't live in one of a half-dozen cities or consider your residence a "summer home" then you are a second-class citizen.

I don't disagree that this woman's dedication is impressive, and that Washington DC would be a hell of a lot better if there were more up there like her, but it's a fair point I think. How many meetings has she ducked out of or missed, how many committees has she not been a part of, how many potentially important trips has she not taken just in the interest of being there for a vote? Being a representative is a lot more than just voting on stuff.

I think that's the first time I've heard Collins called "very conservative". She's pretty damn near the center, at least on the national stage.

Though I suppose, for Maine, "very conservative" may still be left-of-center at the national level. Kind of like Madison.

She was instrumental in creating the Department of Homeland Security, wholeheartedly supported the Military Commissions Act, the Patriot Act, Patiot Act II, the Iraq War, and used her position on the Gov't Oversight Committee to prove her Repuplican bona fides to squash any Congressional Oversight of torture, ghost prisons, and domestic surveillance, among other things.

In short, she's a brave 'centrist' that has helped greatly to bring us to where we are today. And she speaks like she's about to start crying any minute and has a ginorous nose. So there.

Reminds me of a girl I knew in grade school. Never missed a day of school ever, was given some special attendance award at high school graduation. I admired her persistence but she came to school many, many times sick as a dog and incapable of performing her work and was still counted as present just for occupying a seat. Teachers would let her sleep at her desk or even better go take a nap on the teacher's lounge sofa. Meanwhile half the class would catch her bug and be out the rest of the week. So not only did she not truly accomplish her personal goal, she brought the school's productivity as a whole down in the attempt.

Style over substance, ladies. It'll get you far in our shallow culture.

I'm as jaded about the general quality of our representatives as the next guy, but I'm still happy that she is making an attempt at being thorough at her job. Yes, this article "doesn't mean" a lot of things, but it is still a laudable step.

I know very little about congressional procedure, but the term "roll call" doesn't seem to relate to the passage of legislation. Not to mention, legislation also has to be written and reviewed which was most likely the reason she was in a meeting.

Doing one aspect of your job perfectly while messing up in other regards doesn't make you a perfect employee (or public servant).

If I misrepresented your position, my apology. However, from my reading of your assertion, I seemed to me you where making a huge presumption that the congress-woman was shirking her duties just to cast a vote. Since the RWNJs of the GOP have now targeted her and the other 2 Repugnant-cons who voted for the Recovery Act for elimination - I just connected the dots...

I'm a bit too touchy these days because the Democrats are looking very dysfunctional and embarrassing the fark out of this progressive...

My point is, there is nothing in this article to imply she's not doing a wonderful job. It's more like she takes her job serious enough to show up and cast her votes. Who's to say the committee run by Lieberman wasn't a complete waste of time... It appears the accepted thought these days is that public servants can only do one thing at a time, which if true, should disqualify them from public service...

Voting for the lessor of the douche-bags.
And I was one of the most moderate Ron Paul voters in my area, the Ron Paul mailing list and whatnot I quickly removed myself from because they were filled with whargabble.

She also (along with Arlen Specter and Olympia Snowe) has been one of the most powerful senators in Congress the last couple months, due to their willingness to cross party lines and work with Obama on the stimulus package, and the resulting changes in the stimulus package forced by their objections.

Collins is conservative, but she does not always follow party lines. I would rather vote for a person that considers both sides of an argument and chooses a side i tend to disagree with than a person who just mindlessly votes with their party. She is a very intelligent woman, and though I often don't agree with how she votes, I voted for her anyway (along with Obama).

Congratulations Senator Collins, may you cast another 4,000.
