People also jump off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, with about the same amount of newsworthiness.

Japanese kill themselves when they lose their jobs

Americans look for someone else to blame.

Somewhere in the middle lies rationality.

then again, the planet is grossly overpopulated...

Walked through the Jukai with an old friend of mine a few years back. Here's a video he took another time:
Link (pops)

The place is generally creepy - low level hum wherever we went, wierd honeycombed volcanic rock covered by dirt and leaves, looking very much like Fangorn from Lord of the Rings, stillness as soon as you entered the place... A lot of the signs had fallen into misuse, locals (while friendly) weren't really forthcoming about how to enter the forest (we eventually found an entrance behind a sports oval). Didn't see any shoes or other stuff like that, but I could really imagine people going off the track (especially during autumn when it's literally covered with leaves) breaking a leg in a whole and just dying of exposure.
Overall, A+++ would be freaked out again.

I've just added Suicide Forest to my 'Places to avoid in Japan' list along with "Animation writer studio" and "Crazy 88's Dance Club".

Why don't they visit 'Get a job Valley' or 'The Prairie of Free Cheese and Welfare Checks" instead?

And if any anime, it reminds me of some episode right out of Mushi-shi.

itazurakko: People also jump off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, with about the same amount of newsworthiness.

Not news, FARK etc.

As far as I understand it (and I refuse to go looking on Wikipedia to check), the forest only became a popular site for suicides after a emo/romantic novel about star-crossed lovers who travel there to kill themsleves.
The Japanese aren't any crazier than you or me (generally speaking - YMMV), but they sure do love doing whatever it is everyone else is doing.

This, but let's amend this, shall we?

1. CEOs that give themselves HUGE bonuses;
2. Congress who vote FOR giving themselves raises (if it's NOT inflation adjustment);
3. ??? May need to have somebody to grab the baton here...

Anyone ever catch a show called Paranoia Agent? I'm not a big fan of anime, but it's a tremendous show. Had a very odd episode featuring a trio who connect online and seek out ways to kill themselves, only to be thwarted almost until the end.

/Got nothin' else.
//Yeah, the story is disturbing, but goddamn... it's Japan.

Oh, great, another Japan thread. I don't know about my fellow JP Farkers, but this country is nothing like what I was prepared for it to be by the Western press. If the press cares so much about the country, why is every story couched in 'LOL they believe in 'honor' LOL,' or 'LOL tentacle rape LOL'?

Tachikoma [TotalFark] 2009-03-20 03:48:10 AM
Wiki: On some occasions human remains can be found in the distant reaches of the forest, but these are usually more than a few years old and consist of scattered bones and incomplete skeletons suggesting the presence of scavenging animals.

That would have to be the creepiest nature hike ever.

/yeah, 'Versus' popped to my mind immediately as well

It's the trees! They're releasing a toxin that causes people to kill themselves in various, elaborate ways such as starting up a riding mower and lying down in its path.

Its true. I watched a documentary about it

My heart goes out to anyone who feels that low, lonely and alone in their life. That's gotta be a dark place, man.

Question though, the article said something about his "company apartment." Is this common in Japan, where you get housing with your job? So then you loose your job, you automatically loose your home?

Yes to both, especially among younger workers who haven't saved up to buy their own place.
