Didn't this band also cover Blue Monday by Orgy?

"Love will tear us apart again" didn't put New Order on the map. It was a hit for the pre-new order band Joy Division. And as to whether
the song put Joy Division on the map, that's debatable (many would say JD was big before the song).

GOOD STUFF!

They'd performed some JD stuff live their last go round, was sorry to miss them, at Coachella as it now appears they are gone for good.

They've been gone for good once or twice before, so don't give up just yet.

I don't know. NIN did a decent cover of Dead Souls for The Crow soundtrack.

OK, going through breakup of very long-term relationship.
Can't watch or listen to this song.

Is there a more inappropriately named band than Joy Division?

apeiron242 2009-03-20 09:34:51 AM
My favorite version. (new window) Few covers capture the sadness of the song as well as this.

The New Order version is almost... fun. This is NOT a fun song. This is, "I'm cheating on you, I don't want to leave you or stay with you, I'm going to hang myself now".

Check out Control, the movie about Ian from the formation of JD to his death. Watch it with a friend, esp. if you have any history of depression.

Unless you're english, in which case it is a requirement.

From 'pedia:
"Love Will Tear Us Apart" has been covered by many artists including New Order, Nerina Pallot, Hawksley Workman, Calexico, The Cure, Swans, Unbroken, Nouvelle Vague, Heavens, Fall Out Boy, Worm is Green, José González, Red Mecca, Yat-Kha, Stanton Miranda, U2, Arcade Fire, Squarepusher, Honeyroot, Chris Edwards, Susanna and the Magical Orchestra, Moonspell, The Blood Divine, Simple Minds, Oysterband with June Tabor, Paul Young, Jamie Cullum, Nick Cave, Michelle Darkness feat. Hanna Pakarinen and Evelyn Evelyn. The song "Let's Dance to Joy Division" by UK act The Wombats was inspired by "Love Will Tear Us Apart," as is obvious from the parodied cover of The Wombat's single.

nopokerface: Is there a more inappropriately named band than Joy Division?

They were named after the Jewish women forced to work as prostitutes in Nazi concentration camps.

So, that's kind of depressing.

It's amazing how they can do the worst cover of a song they originally did...The Cure did a great cover of the song as did The Swans. Ok, maybe Fallout Boy and Paul Young did the worst covers of this song but I never have liked Bernard Sumner singing it.

I 100% disagree. This is the most meaningful version of the song. It surpasses the JD version in that I can actually hear the farking lyric, which is the major failing of most JD stuff. (Muddy mixing, mumbling.). Add the emotional factor that it has to be a bit gut-wrenching for Sumner to sing this, and the rest of the band to play it, and you've got a great track. The Cure version is weaksauce.

The version that was linked upthread was. in a word. craptacular.
The lead. singer. takes. very annoying. pauses.

Terribly phrased.

Youve got to hold and give but do it at the right time. You can be slow or fast, but you must get to the line. They'll always hit you and hurt you, defend and attack. There's only one way to beat them, get round the back. Catch me if you can, 'cos I'm the England man, and what you're looking at is the master plan. We ain't no hooligans. This ain't a football song, three lions on my chest, I know we cant go wrong.

Yes sir!! :-)

Sorry, I just couldn't help myself. Every time I hear that song, I always end up singing the Giggs version.

I saw Richard Buckner do an awesome version backed by members of The Butthole Surfers at SXSW 4 or 5 years ago. Sadly, I have never been able to find a recording.

I've always be partial to the Cure's cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" though by no means is it as powerful as JD's. The Swans version is a little, I dunno, breathy? Just dosen't work for me. Squarepusher's version makes me kinda stabby.

Except when they're covering Sisters Of Mercy or Bauhaus.

Nouvelle Vague - Love Will Tear Us Apart (new window)

HAHAHAHHA -- ya, if you're gay (NTTAWWT)

Don't get me wrong, I like some jazz like Koop, Nicola Conte etc, but a jazzy "muzak version" is only pissing on the grave of a legend.

And I do agree with the other remark earlier against my post that Joy Division SHOULD NOT be covered .. Ian Curtis is just that good. But I stand by my remark that the Swans cover did it the song justice. And is the ONLY cover that has done the song justice so far.

spellacopter 2009-03-21 01:16:01 AM
If we're talking previously-recorded-with-Ian-songs, I'd have to go with Ceremony as the most gut-wrenching by far.

Seen it before. It's terrible and too upbeat. The Fallout Boy version is godawful. That guy's as much of a Wentz as Wentz is.

Gestalt 2009-03-21 04:45:51 PM
I like Sumner's voice for this song more than Ian Curtis's. It was always one of my least favorite Joy Division songs as it doesn't reconcile well, it's bittersweet and has a certain amount of brightness with those keys but most of their stuff is ascerbic or flat-out somber.

Pretty much. The only one I personally think comes close is the Cure's version.
