Don't worry, they are being copied to NTSC VHS just as fast as the interns can do it.

You'd think that they'd have someone bright enough to run out and buy a region-free DVD player from a local electronics store

"Although he mournfully had to put the popcorn away, he is unlikely to jeopardise the special relationship"

I guess that means he's still Obama's PAL.

Bored Horde: You'd think that they'd have someone bright enough to run out and buy a region-free DVD player from a local electronics store

You'd think someone was smart enough to check the region encoding.

I know if a British friend of mine gave me a DVD, the first think I'd do is check to see if I could take it home.

He should just email Obama, and ask for a link to a torrent.

WhackingDay 2009-03-19 03:53:51 PM
Haha.. he should send them a region 1 DVD player.

/probably forget the adapter plug though

Fortunately, I'm operating behind a number of proxies so they'll never be able to find me.

So are we allowed to send him a North American DVD player too, or is that not allowed? Because I have an extra one in the basement that I'm not using. I won't even charge him for shipping.

The fact that you even have to consider these things just goes to show how idiotic the law is.

barneyfifesbullet 2009-03-19 04:02:33 PM
The next time the UK PM stops by here, I will give him some of the choice picks from my bootleg collection. Some Zep, some Sab, some Who.

He should be able to relate to that much better than some lame DVDs an Obama staff secretary got off of Amazon. Way to get someone a thoughtful gift, Barry. I guess the teleprompter told you AMAZON.

The_Sponge [TotalFark] 2009-03-19 04:03:47 PM
It could have been worse....like giving HD DVDs to the PM.

Atleast you can play those in a blu ray.. The only problem is the blu ray player would still be booting up.

FALE

Along with this (new window), it's pretty obvious foreign policy is not going to be the strong suit of the administration. Sure, things like this may seem stupid, but they cause the leaders to lose respect for the leaders, and respect is key if something big happens.

Lt. Cheese Weasel 2009-03-19 04:05:52 PM
This is so utterly pathetic and embarrassing. I'm not even going to stick around for the roasting of the Obots defending this moron.

The farking DVDs were the wrong region. So not only was the gift so farking cheap, it was beyond cheap and was completely without forethought.

After awhile, shooting ducks in a barrel gets boring.

What an embarrassment.

optional 2009-03-19 04:06:29 PM
This was a very Bush-esque move on Obama's part.

Send him a TV while you are at it because I'm sure your DVD player is NSTC and not PAL. Also pack in two power converters, 110 power supplies don't like 220 course through them.

Nabb1: Good Lord, the DVDs weren't even the right region?

You know, I support Obama, but a box of DVD's is the f*cking lamest gift to a foreign dignitary. Particularly when that dignitary gives you a pen made from the wood of an anti slave ship whose sister ship was used to make the resolute desk in your office.

Well, that sentence was confusing.

I don't think O likes the British much. First he removes the bust of Winston Churchill then this.

I think our relationship is going to sour.

BlueMidget 2009-03-19 04:07:59 PM
Yes, our President and his entire staff are all farking morons.

One of the first things out of my mouth when I heard he gave out farkin' DVD's to the leader of a foreign country was... "Did anyone think to make sure they weren't region 1?" Apparently not. Welcome to America Jack.

Maybe they thought that because they were "Obama-fied" that meant that they were no longer normal DVD's. But, something special that was capable of doing more than they originally were capable. You know, like most of the crap he's been pushing since he started trying to get elected.

Either that or the walking Teleprompter of the United States thought that the Prime Minister wouldn't ever bother to watch American cinematic masterpieces. (like Crush Groove and Breakin' Two, Electric Boogaloo)

3_Butt_Cheeks 2009-03-19 04:08:03 PM
This has to be a right wing conspiracy.

Or..maybe, just maybe, the teleprompter is trying to destabilize Obama's credibility in an evil attempt for the machines to take over! It snuck those DVD's in there. It purposely changed the speeches when the Irish PM was speaking, then did it to Obama next. I see a pattern developing.

Was the teleprompter vetted?

Cat Food Sandwiches: Can't wait until he entertains some world leaders that have cultures that are actually different than ours.

I think he'll be OK with Indonesia and Kenya, for two. Heck, the German lady president would be delighted not to have her shoulders fondled by some creep.

A NTSC dvd will work on a PAL TV if I recall correctly.

theguyinthe$4000suit 2009-03-19 04:09:28 PM
The real story is the gift that Gordon Brown gave to Obama. It was a pen carved from the wood of a british anti-slavery ship. The ship was the sister ship to another famous anti-slavery patrol boat. Part of that ship was made into the desk in the oval office.

And Obama gave him some DVD's he can't play.

netcentric 2009-03-19 04:09:33 PM
You know they are going to tell the lowest paid WH secretary to run to Walmart over lunch...buy a DVD player and fed-ex it to GB.

Then when she submits an expense report...they'll turn it down saying "during these tough times we are cutting back on supplies".

REQUEST DENIED!
