Yes, it's a writer from Wonkette. That said, her pigeon meat thing fell a little flat since pigeons are actually quite good to eat if you believe the rest of the world.

Squab is pretty tasty, but it's not quite the same as that feathered rat you see in most urban areas.

Why doesn't Obama support Big Agriculture?

Communists grow their own food. Clearly Obama is an America-hating Communist.

Tomato plants is what I'm aiming to protect so a partial list might include

whiteflys, hornworms, fruitworms, aphids, leafminers, pinworms, stinkbugs, loopers, cutworms...

Then do NOT use tobacco juice...tobacco is a great natural insecticide, but it will kill members of the nightshade family (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, eggplant, etc.).

Limonene, a citrus essential oil, could be a good choice. Just don't go overboard, as excess concentrations will kill the meristem of any plant. Garlic sprays are also quite effective as repellents.

A lot of your insect and mammal problems can be solved by planting partner crops that will repel the pests. Any member of the allium family (garlic, onions, leeks) is good. Certain herbs are good repellants (basil comes to mind, and besides, you want some fresh basil to go with those fresh tomatoes, right?). Horseradish works well too.

As an aside, I love strawberry season in Florida...not just for the berries, but also for the fresh onions they use as a border crop to keep the mammals out. Strawberry onions are out of this world.

Am I weird if I'm excited about her garden and angry that I can't use DDT?

Actually I've got the tomato plants potted in the middle of my herb garden (3 basil, 2 oregano, 2 parsley,1 marjoram, 1 mint, 2 rosemary, 1 thyme and 2 datils) so maybe I'll get some positive effects from that.

Incidentally, a quick google under limonene didn't bring up a pasticide per se, are they out there or is it easier to find in another department, like cleaning supplies?

TIA

Bleh. Better living through chemistry, as far as I'm concerned.

If it helps the environment, fine...as long as it's as cheap or cheaper than the chemical alternative.

fair enough. I have no problem with the idea of REDUCING pesticides. And cheap/cheaper than the chemical alternative and works just a well, fine. I mean, there's a lot of things we can learn from more 'natural' methods of doing things.

But frankly, as someone who has gardened, whose family gardens, though admittedly we're NOT farmers by any stretch of the imagination, I CANNOT see how you can possibly grow decent vegetables without SOME modern pesticides and fertilizers UNLESS you spend your entire life babying one little plant. Are you going to pick off the bugs by hand or something?

I don't really see the problem with having an organic garden. Is there something about not using pesticides that bothers you? Perhaps the negative cultural connotations are just overwhelming, what with the "pansy assed yuppie" bit and all.
