"It felt like the time is right We are completely desperate for programming ideas," said Jeff Olde, VH1 executive vp original programming.

TMLO will be featured, however wearing a phantom of the opera style mask, to keep the mystique.

Yeah, they haven't done most of the country stars, and none of the Gospel music, Opera music and Classical music stars. Not to mention most of the stars of yesteryear.

And this is a genre whose stock in trade has always been "how low will we go". I reckon we're fixing to find out.

Outside the US, this show is only known for the Simpsons parody. Were they all like this?

They should call the show Behind the Artist, since it's about everything but the music itself.

SynthLord: They should call the show Behind the Artist, since it's about everything but the music itself.

To be fair, it's Behind The Music, not The Music. As in, hey, look behind that music over there. Oh, it's a couple of guys overdosing, getting arrested for public lewdness and bickering with each other over where the "bad horsie" guitar squeal goes. Huh, couldn't see that with the music in the way.

wpmulligan 2009-03-19 08:40:30 AM
It promises a fresh, new take on cleaning and polishing mixing boards.

I always liked the show in general, especially when it focused on an interesting artist...but if they're starting with Li'l Wayne, they're getting off on the wrong foot.

Um, have you seen some of the "artists" they feature? Not all of them actually have music.

I liked that show at first until you realize its

Step 1) Get famous
step 2) get on drugs and loose your money
step 3) Get sober and famous again.

Then, after that the show is pretty boring.

The humor of which is only eclipsed by Tommy Shaw's genuine belief that Styx was a heavy metal band.

It was an era where heavy metal bands sang about magical rivers and tiny hobbits...

Before we had to cut back on our cable selection I watched the hell out of VH1 Classic. I think I gave up on VH1 when "I Love the __s" was shown ad nauseum and then became nothing but shiatty reality shows.

Yup. As fun as it is, it's the same story every episode. A bright young man/woman/child shows interest in music/drugs/preening and starts a band/solo act/modeling career. Band gets noticed and makes it big only to have sex/drugs/egos get in the way. The band's music starts to suck/blow and they quit with everyone hating each other. But today, after an encounter with God/Co-dependent Wife/Absinthe they're making plans for a comeback.

The Weird Al one was the only major difference, mostly because he really is a clean-cut, nice, low-maintenance guy in real life.

The best piss-take on this formula was from Weird Al's episode:

"And then my 6th album only went Gold, and I had to buy the medium-sized jacuzzi."

mattharvest [TotalFark] 2009-03-19 10:00:46 AM
Has Weird Al ever had a 'down' period? I mean, he seems to have been uniformly popular since Fat.

Lil Wayne? Do we really need a Lil Wayne Behind the Music?

csi_yellowknife 2009-03-19 10:07:19 AM
I think it was Al who said it, or maybe a band mate I forget, but the show really tried to make UHF's failure at the Box Office look like a crushing blow to his career.

I loved those two as well especially The List. I would email my brother my version of the list and then we would commence to argue over whose was right. (mine always was.)

The problem with Behind the Music was it became a launchpad for an artists new record. It would all be about "now so and so is ready to hit the road with a new lead singer and a new album out." It will probably happen again.

Scurvy Dog 2009-03-19 10:45:21 AM
I would watch a Talking Heads episode. As far as I can tell, they've never done that (not according to what I could find on Google, anyway), and that would be pretty interesting - especially if they tried to get Byrne and Weymouth into the same room.

White Zombie would be great! Also a Smashing Pumpkins episode would be epic, can you imagine James Iha & D'arcy talking about how much of an ass Billy Corgan is?

My favorite part of that episode was when they had Mark Mothersbaugh comment on the Devo style-parody "Dare to be Stupid." He said something like, "They got the perfect synthesizer sound on that track, and I hated them for it."

I think it was even more than that, he said something to the effect of "it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard, and... (long pause) ...I hated him for it."

God what a dork.

BTM is crack television. I could watch the shiat out of that show. Yeah, the stories are similar for the most part, but it's entertaining as hell.

The cable network is ordering about 10 new episodes of "Music," bringing back the iconic documentary program

People sure throw the term iconic around these days.

They must have found 10 new acts with death, drugs, depravity and couldn't resist. The documentary triple DDD.

You should've watched the Genesis BTM episode. Man, did they ever try to build up some drama... but they really had nothing to work with. The only difference was where most bands plug their reunion tour/album at the end, Tony had the gall to say they might quit for good.

SplitGuy 2009-03-19 11:42:11 AM
Would love to see one on the Replacements- drunkeness, despair, flirting w/ stardom, unfulfilled commercial potential but hugely influential, death, etc.
All the elements are there, but you know they'd never cooperate.

I concur.

There should also be some kind of age limit or minimum level of success before you get a show, like, at least a decade of experience... or something.

As a bit of a music geek, I am more partial to the similar show (Classic Albums or something?) where they would take the master recordings and play the unmixed versions of songs, then isolate and bring up obscure little bits.

"And here is the bass line being doubled on french horn. We buried that in the final mix because we realized it was totally gay. And here, in the bridge, you can hear the bassist being fellated. While subtle in the final mix, this really adds to the overall ambiance of the song."

Bill: Probably order a pizza and watch Behind the Music.

Bill: Who cares? Someone's gonna get fat, someone's gonna go broke, and someone's gonna find God... I love that show.

They ought to look into getting Ross Halfin to be a regular interviewee, regardless of who the artist is. His bluntness made quite a few of the episodes into high comedy.

"Poison were a girls' band! I never met any guys who were Poison fans, and if I did, they were sad!"

This is why I'm calling Shenanigans. Oh sure, they'll go with music to begin with, but what this really is, is an excuse to have "Behind the Reality: Flavor of Love".

The Bon Jovi one was supremely boring. Since they didn't get all farked up on drugs, the only thing they could come up with was..

Dear Behind the Music: the stories of the following bands would make for far better shows than Lil Wayne:
Husker Du
The Replacements
The Cure
The Gin Blossoms
XTC

Thank you, that is all.

I read this in the library and look like an idiot trying to stifle my laughter (still). Though I've never heard of the show, I definitely want to hunt down some copies, especially since their album list looks pretty good on wikipedia.

Any ones I should check out immediately?

I disagree. I had always wondered why Alec was gone and I'd never heard why.
