Behold the stupid director choosing the one shot --from John Wetton's side-- that has David Cross blocking our view of Robert Fripp. Bastard.

What a drummer Bill Bruford was/is and what an incredible band this version of King Crimson was.

Robert Fripp looks amazingly like Eric Clapton

DrZiffle: Behold the mighty King Crimson doing an improvisation noodling in 1973.

...and far from their finest noodling, at that. Always been a fan, but live performances were a lot more exciting with Belew in the band, regardless of whether you like the stuff he did with them or not. I don't have an opinion on anything they've done live after the Three of a Perfect Pair Tour, though. Haven't seen them since then. And when the hell was that, anyway? '86 or '87? Damn, I'm old.

John Wetton is still going strong! This Link is John's official website. John's voice and killer Bass playing are STILL a sight to see and listen to. He has great interaction with his fans on his guestbook. His name is Johan there......

That was the period where (according to Fripp) they could shred wallpaper at 100 paces. But not their best example of improv. Still fun to watch, especially for Bill B in the back, engaged in the moment.

And not much of a view of Fripp and you couldn't hear Wetton until about 3 minutes in. I want my money back!

/Thanks, really

Yeah, how could you not lose hearing from just being in the audience? Fripp is a great musician, but that tone is farking terrible. I know even Zappa had his moments with ear-splitting guitar noise, but after a certain point that shiat is just painful and not enjoyable. Still a cool jam though.

I like King Crimson but that sounded like a cat going through a bandsaw.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2009-03-19 12:34:38 PM
yay it got greenlit!
subby here!

I chose this one because it was "high quality". it's true tho....
it was less "murky" and "muddy" and "dull" sounding than the other one...

and yeah, it may not be their greatest Improv ever ["the Great Deceiver" box set contains about 7 great improvs]
but it's one of the few actually filmed things of that era KC, besides Part 1 [easy money] and that "Larks Part 1" with Muir, on youtube.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2009-03-19 12:38:15 PM
lol...."Clueless and Slightly Slack"

/ seriously tho, if you haven't heard or picked up the "Great Deceiver" box set, and are a fan of Wetton Bruford Era KC, i strongly recommend it. it was in print then out of print then in print again. should be able to find it on ebay or something.
i found mine at the local library, borrowed it, and copied it. and returned it of course.

phartnocker 2009-03-19 12:41:47 PM
I thought it was good until I realized that the bassist was wearing the shirt of his own band. Then I thought it sucked. And plus, any time it sounds like all members of the band are playing a totally different song all at the same time and Frank Zappa is not on the stage, you suck.

why do I get the impression that all Frank Zappa fans are like that Scottish Mike Meyers SNL character, except they say "if it's not Frank Zappa, IT'S CRAP!"?

Good post, Eno. Put some Magma on next, it's sort of an aural colon-blow. Love the Wetton-Bruford rythymn section.

There are a hell of a lot of excellent recordings from the 72-73 tour season. HIGHLY recommend the "great deciever" box set. Amazing version 2.0 of King Crimson - sort of silly to try to compare any of the editions or line ups.

2and4: No.

Might as well be The White Sripes.

thanks dude!
i saw some magma vids on youtube a few months ago, they were kinda weird and even a little boring. that drum solo by that drummer / Magma leader was also weird / unconventional / etc.
hell, i listen to Gong, and The Residents, and Soft Machine, and stuff, i'm not sure even *i* could 'get into them'. lol

i saw their second album [?] [double lp] for sale in my fav. record store about 2 years ago. it was $40. i think it might've even been "new" [in its original packaging] i said F*** it. lol. [ i wasn't going to lay down $40 for something i've never heard of ---- heard the name, never actually heard them....
and not to mention pay that much $$$ for something i couldn't listen to --- since it was "new" ---]

You can get Magma Live for $3.99 or Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh for $5.99 on iTunes, if you're into iTunes at all. Highly recommended for fans of heavy prog, but not for the faint of heart.

lerxst2112 [TotalFark] 2009-03-19 03:20:19 PM
Magma's debut Kobaia is pretty good jazz fusion. Also I hear that their second album 1001° Centigrade is in the same vein as Kobaia. However after that they went heavy with the opera style vocals in later albums, which I am not keen to. Great music, but the style they went for in their later albums turned me off.

i love king crimson but i must be the only fan to like the studio albums way better(except for the nightwatch which is a better mix than SABB). ive had the great deceiver box since it came out and all the boots, but ive always thought their improvisations completely suck. am i alone on this?

the only one i kinda like is asbury park from usa.

they are not for the attention span challenged like me though. aside from the real early stuff, the songs are VERY repetitive and pretty much do the same thing for 5 hours. if youre expecting yes or king crimson, its not like that at all. i can see why people like magma, i just dont.

Try some of the videos of De Futura and anything off of the Bobino 81 dvd where Vander and Co. wear Battlestar Galactica costumes. Great guitar from future Tri Yann member Jean-Luc Chevalier. Double bass guitars as well. It'll scare the cats and probably wife as well.

Another strong strong recommendation for Great Deceiver and the other live set The Night Watch.

Brilliant, including a definitive Starless that will bring grown men to their knees.

That was garbage.

Give my two kids (2 year-old and a 6 year-old) the same instruments and they'll give you something that sounds remarkably similar to that piece of shiat I just listened to.

Completely suck is strong, but I agree that their live improv can be lacking. Fripp's ego might the problem, but I just don't hear them playing off each other very well.

And for farks sake - what a horrible guitar tone! I can honestly say that I am a Crimson fan, but I never ever want to hear that shiat again.

Hexenmeister 2009-03-19 10:26:25 PM
For any Crim fans out there, I highly recommend Bill Bruford's newly released autobiography. He has some very candid things to say about working with Robert Fripp.

I recently read somewhere that Wetton was kind of disappointed with "Larks Tongues" album... he said it was kind of weak, performance/sound wise, in that it lacked the power and fury of their live performances. so therefore i'm thinking "SABB" and "red" were more to his liking.

well... i'd say 70% of their improvs are fair/good.
15% have tresendantly awesome parts sprinkled in them
the rest have horrible atonal stuff in them.

i remember reading somewhere that if the audience was not behaving at the beginning of the show, not appreciating them, having hecklers and whatnot, they'd beat the audience over the head with their music [most likely improvs i suppose] until some calmed down or were more quiet, or liked it or went away, etc.

things i like:
when cross and wetton or wetton and fripp or fripp and crosshiat magical harmonious notes together.
the [unfortunetly all too rare] mellotron duets.
the interplay and psychic sync-ing between wetton and bruford.

mahavishnunj 2009-03-20 01:29:16 AM
Third_Uncle_Eno: the [unfortunetly all too rare] mellotron duets.

this.i totally forgot about 'trio' which everyone has to agree is by FAR the best kc improv.

that i just dont see. i always thought larks tongues 1 was the better of the two, and there has absolutely NEVER been a live version even close to the badassedness of the studio version. larks tongues 2 is always pretty much exactly as it is on the record.

I would say probably all of the live versions of Exiles that I've heard sounded better live than the album version. Possibly the same for Easy Money. I like the studio version of Easy Money, but the sound effects/voices make it sound a little over-produced and kind of like a poor-man's Pink Floyd.

mahavishnunj 2009-03-20 04:26:55 PM

B'boom, leading into Thrak, from the album Thrak around 1994. If you're an old fan and you haven't heard it, you owe it to yourself.

"Trio", from S&BB.
Fripp: mellotron, Cross: violin, Wetton: bass

I can't think of a more beautiful piece of improvised music.
