Could happen to anyone. In fact, it has happened to me before.

I'm assuming the screeners didn't know who he was, so why should he be treated differently from the rest of us?

Two of them, it appears. David Vitter yanked open a plane door and Peter DeFazio drew extra attention.

Trifecta now in play.

Members of congress are the little bus riders of the political system. It's hard to find a member of congress with an IQ above 120.

So now they probably won't do screen checks for connecting flight passengers. Which is awesome, cause now all I have to do is hand off a box cutter and some C4 Pert Plus to my Islamic friend who's catching a connecting flight to Washington D.C.

If people would actually RTFA they would know that he is complaining about getting searched TWICE. He had already been on a plane and was making a connecting flight where he was pulled out randomly for another search. What's the point in searching someone that has already been on a plane?

I certainly did not know of this policy but I only fly maybe once or twice a year. If I were him I'd probably make a stink too.

No, they'll do it. Remember, some of the people on the connection are just through screening, rather than coming from another flight. It's happened to me on a connection, and it's really not a big deal.

I wouldn't assume that. DeFazio is very, very well known throughout Oregon. Hell, my kids know who he is and they don't follow politics at all.

I'm glad that the politicians are getting sick of getting pulled out of line for a body cavity search by a group of high school dropout thugs. Maybe we'll start to see a reduction in airport security.

It doesn't matter either way, since the second you protest a TSA action they can do pretty much whatever they want with you. Even if there are rules and regulations against it, judging by their hiring practices they don't feel compelled to follow them.

Nice to see that they don't discriminate based on office held, though.

FTA: "I didn't lose my temper. I was not happy and I told them it was a stupid practice," DeFazio said Tuesday.

You see, people in Congress do have analytic capability. No shiat it's gotten absurdly stupid. I just wish they would apply this level of clear thinking to their actual jobs.

"The context is I was inside the airport and had already completed security screening (in Eugene) and had already flown on an airplane" when he was pulled out of line - apparently at random - and searched by security agents wearing rubber gloves, DeFazio said.

It's called added layers of security, it's done in CBP, DHS, ICE and TSA as well... common practice.

I go out of my way to avoid flying. I believe the post 9/11 security is an unconstitutional breach of my privacy. The 4th amendment specifically states "but upon probable cause". I carry a pocket knife, along with several other items, everywhere I go. Before September 11th I never had a problem taking it on a plane, and I flew numerous times a year while in the USAF. Now I will go to jail if I insist on keeping my knife when I enter the plane, regardless of whether I see it as a tool or a weapon. My assurances that I am sane and peaceful will not prevent them from searching my shoes for bombs or confiscating my shaving cream. And I am paying for the entire mess. So are you, if you pay taxes in the United States.

mctom 2009-03-17 08:56:28 PM
I won't hold my breath, but maybe some of these stupid laws will be relaxed and we can go back to regular old airport security, rather than taking off our shoes, belts, going through the air-blowing security machine and then getting a full search because you were 'randomly selected' (to say nothing of the double search that Difazio experienced)...

Oh, whats that? There's a huge industry built around airport security?

deadapostle: I'm glad that the politicians are getting sick of getting pulled out of line for a body cavity search by a group of high school dropout thugs. Maybe we'll start to see a reduction in airport security.

Wrong.

Body cavity searches are not done by TSA, only law enforcement.
You need a high school degree to enter the TSA.
The TSA has the same average years of college as most federal agencies like ICE and CBP... and it's above most local law enforcements.

But don't let petty things like the truth get in the way with your complaining...

Well, technically, you're entering private property(airplane), which makes your point moot.

About getting checked, I used to work for the TSA and now work for the DHS directly, my security clearance is above any of the people who work there (except for the BAOs, but I guess you guys ignore the people with 15 years of bomb squad experience because it doesn't fit your "dumb thugs" argument)... but I know I have to get checked, nobody is above the security checkpoint... even if the president were to fly commercial he would have to go through standard security.

Now I've worked with Saudi Royal Family, and many heads of state from Central America and the Caribbean and for the most part they know they have to go through security like everyone else... it's humbling experience and I can understand how it can anger the "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM, PEOPLE"...

By the way, I basically think there is NO WAY a brown arab guy is going to do an attack... I guess it's a remote possibility but it's almost surely going to be a white guy from Minnesota who will do the attack... I just wish sometimes you guys could only see what goes on behind the scenes and see that what you see at the checkpoint is only 1% of the operation, and that if you guys could see what I see there would be a lot less snarkiness about this subject.

WAAAAHH!!!

I've twice been singled out and had my carry on and person searched after already going through security. I've also been chosen to have my bag entirely emptied out in front of me as they went through every article inside of my bag and destroyed any kind of order that I had anything put away in. I've been interoggated in a backroom, and also randomly chosen to have my body rubbed with some kind of gunpowder finding paper substance. All on seperate flights.

I'm white with blonde hair blue eyes, have no criminal record and my biggest crime on paper is a 90mph speeding ticket I got in Idaho.

AKA no sympathy for this jerk.

Once again, DeFazio isn't one of the '"DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM PEOPLE..."'.

Someone show me in the article where it states that he thought he was above being checked. Oh that's right, it's not there. He had already been checked and was mad about being checked again, JUST LIKE ANYONE ELSE WOULD BE.

How do you know DeFazio was in favor of those new laws? How do you know he didn't get steamrolled by the opposition that did favor them?

Don't think so. See, we don't deal with the guys with 15 years of bomb squad experience. We deal with the crabby asshats that think they're God of the Terminal, and you will BOW before their omnipresence! Nobody cares about the 99% of what goes on behind the scenes; we just don't want to be treated like criminals for daring to fly in a freakin' airplane on a Tuesday.

Yeah, we get it, there's a real NEED for us to bring less than three ounces on toothpaste on the plane, and it has NOTHING to do with the extra money airlines charge for checking bags.

You want to convince me you're doing your job to "keep America safe"?

Start checking the cargo containers coming into our ports and stop making me take my shoes off.

I doubt that. I don't know if I'm about to take a big old bite of bait, but the TSA is a bunch of rude, slack-jawed numbskulls who provide zero sense of security.

Reminds me of the guy that was creating a scene at the counter at the gate at the airport and yelled out, "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?"

The gate agent picked up her intercom phone and said, "There is a gentleman at my counter who has apparently forgotten who he is. If you know who he is, please come to my counter and claim him."

You obviously have not traveled via commercial air all that often since 9/11. I flew 4 flight segments a few weeks ago. Got singled out for extra screening 2/4 segments. It's a pain in the arse. Yes. It's a "stupid practice". But it's rules/regs/laws that were enacted by idiotic/reactionary politicians.

It's good to see him get to experience what he and his ilk got us. Now, perhaps he'll realize the absurdity of some of this stuff, and perhaps allow a little profiling (gasp! he said it!) to go after the real security threats. And perhaps, if the initial screeners would do their job in the first place, we wouldn't have a need to pull people out for the rubber glove search.

I now do not fly commercial unless the distance is one that I cannot drive in 12 hours, or unless it's an emergency situation. I'd rather drive it. Much less of a pain in the butt, and I get to haul more baggage without a bigger charge.
