I grew up in Detroit in the late 60s and early 70s, I was at the Grande many times, and I never heard of these guys. Anyone else?

Righteously Indignant [TotalFark] 2009-03-16 09:44:33 PM
I grew up in rural Texas in the 80s and 90s, I've never been to the Grande, and I've also never heard of these guys. Weird.

I've also never heard of these guys, but a very interesting article.

Punk goes back to the 1600's in England.

I was sure it was going to be another fluff piece about The Clash or god damned Sex Pistols. I've never heard of these guys either but this is a cool article. Thanks Subbs!

Don't miss the Mp3 of Politicians in My Eyes in the sidebar. It's a pretty badass tune.

punk before punk? Wasn't that basically The Stooges and MC5?

bigtotoro 2009-03-17 01:17:39 AM
Does that mean that The Stooges are the band that was punk before punk was punk was punk?

Gunny Highway 2009-03-17 01:21:47 AM
Cool article and real good tune. Thanks subs.

Now I got some new stuff to look for. I love it when an article can provide 2 or 3 new groups to check out. Rock on Fark.

picturescrazy 2009-03-17 01:37:39 AM
Don't get me wrong, I do like the song they had posted, but it also sounds kind of 70s to me.

Sounds great. Very clean recording.

senorpogo 2009-03-17 01:46:50 AM
I picked up the album. Great stuff all around.

"Keep on Knocking" and "Let the World Turn" are my definite favourites.

TheCharmerUnderMe [TotalFark] 2009-03-17 01:47:14 AM
Really like that tune. I would have loved to have seen these guys live.

HereComesTheScience 2009-03-17 01:50:16 AM
I was never really a punk fan, but I loved that song.

Global Citizen 2009-03-17 02:01:50 AM

RIP Chuck

Holy Crap! This is like the holy grail of Detroit music. Back in my punk days in Michigan they were kind of known but nobody ever had heard a song. I can't f'n believe this!

hey, that album is fantastic

seek it out if you can

I Like Bread 2009-03-17 04:39:28 AM
Huh? This isn't the Kinks.

Vertoule 2009-03-17 04:48:47 AM
I found these guys a week or two ago when I was looking for Death (as in the metal band) albums on Amazon. Their album was shown as a new release and I was slightly confused at the time, so I checked em out. Needless to say, I hopped down to my record store and put in an order today... Which is neat since this article happens to appeared today (well, the day after, technically). :D

I have to say, they're pretty badass and I'm glad that they've managed to get a bit more exposure (especially now on fark), as it's long deserved. Shame I didn't hear of them sooner, not that I'd have been able to find any of their music.

unyon [TotalFark] 2009-03-17 05:01:55 AM
Just downloaded from iTunes. I never heard of them before, but they're pretty tight. Good band.

NakedReporta [TotalFark] 2009-03-17 05:03:02 AM
I'm something of an obscuro music fan, and I have to admit that I'd never heard of these guys either. Although, strangely, having gone to college with a bunch of pothead New Englanders in the late '80s/early '90s, I HAD heard of Lambsbread, the reggae band two of the brothers later founded. Lambsbread was mildly more enjoyable than the usual jam-band fare most of the potheads in my dorm would blast from their speakers at 3 a.m. But not by much.

This, however, is one bad-ass album. Between this and Rodriguez's "Cold Fact," it's been a good year for unearthing lost gems from the Motor City.

Weigard 2009-03-17 05:40:25 AM
I liked these guys a few years ago but now that you all know them they suck.

cabritosaurio 2009-03-17 06:19:37 AM
Weigard: I liked these guys a few years ago but now that you all know them they suck.

This

I found another obscure band yesterday which only 3 other people know of (including the bandmembers), there's still room for about 5 more people before they start to suck. Hurry up, let's go!

jnoel 2009-03-17 06:43:09 AM
pfft...Monks were punk 10 years before these guys...

Tresser [TotalFark] 2009-03-17 07:28:18 AM
-1 for not coming up with your own headline. and since the article is 5 days old, you've had plenty of time to make up a good one.

d web 2009-03-17 08:15:27 AM
Awesome story and cool tune.

DjangoStonereaver [TotalFark] 2009-03-17 08:20:09 AM
OK, I am confused:

If NOBODY ever heard of these guys, who could they have been an
influence on the Ramones et al?

Not that they weren't ahead of their time, it sounds to me like
'alternative music' snobbery taken to its logical conclusion:
extolling the genius of a band that was literally unknown to anyone
outside of their own small circle?

carmody 2009-03-17 08:21:43 AM
I've seen the band's name in print in some seriously geeky indie music press...but that's about the extent of it.

irockalot 2009-03-17 08:30:04 AM
Death and Groovesville parted ways in 1976.

I was hoping they would have played above 1979.

Glitchwerks 2009-03-17 08:52:38 AM
Very cool submission. I'd love to see more stuff like this, rather than the usual Amy Winehouse self destruction update or Britney Spears showing her crotch to the world update.

Stupid Floppy Clownshoes 2009-03-17 09:05:41 AM
Best article on the Music tab in a while. Another kudos to subby.

jweedy 2009-03-17 09:15:28 AM
No, the Stranglers were punk before punk was punk. Link (new window)

Ok, they both started the same year.

/odd coincidence.
//convergent evolution?

OurManFlint1 [TotalFark] 2009-03-17 09:23:07 AM
Great song. Pretty edgy stuff for 1974

Awesome.

Just. Plain. Awesome.

chaoslovescompany 2009-03-17 09:32:45 AM
Can't listen at work but ordered the cd. If they're half as good as what I've heard from this thread and the reviews it's a no brain buy. I love finding good music.

Dorf11 2009-03-17 09:37:46 AM
Yeah, awesome is the word. Thanks, subby.

Wow, that's a pretty awesome song. Thanks subby!

kruppz 2009-03-17 10:08:38 AM
Thx for schooling me. Interesting.
I consider this Rock though... definately not as wild as MC5.

jweedy: No, the Stranglers were punk new wave before punk was punk hardcore.

FTFY

duncangonuts 2009-03-17 10:18:45 AM
Just gonna jump on this bandwagon here and say I digged the song and will check out the album.

GibbyTheMole 2009-03-17 10:24:40 AM
Loved it... Bought it. Excellent stuff! Too bad that's the only album they recorded, tho.

TheRaven77 2009-03-17 10:36:22 AM
nice - listening to "keep on knocking" as I clicked that link. awesome.

chopit 2009-03-17 11:02:51 AM
CD bought. Thanks, Fark! This is the third awesome band I've learned about because of you ridiculous assholes.

mistervague 2009-03-17 11:47:27 AM
I'm actually very surprised how good that song is..

mfaby 2009-03-17 12:02:32 PM
Read 'This' as 'The' and thought it was gonna be another BJ piece
on the wonder that is Robbie Robertson - well known song stealer.
