(Starpulse) Spiffy Iron Maiden cancel plans to call it quits after next album; say they're having too much fun making music that pales in comparison to that of their heyday in the 80s and plan to stick around into their own 80s   (starpulse.com) divider line 44

I dunno, subby. I haven't heard any of their real recent stuff, but Dickinson had some good solo albums.

/And let's face it--they did Powerslave.
//'Nuff said.

Hell, Bruce Dickinson can't keep flying 757s forever, so he has to have something to fall back on. Unless the UK raises the mandatory retirement age, Bruce has about ten years of commercial flying left. On the other hand, you can rock as long as you live. Just ask Keith Richards.

Still love the Dianno years more. Good guitar up to Powerslave, but after that, they got so wrapped into the grande theatre of Metal vaudeville, it just got silly. Somewhere on Tour was a real let-down of a concert. NOTHING from Killers or Piece of Mind (not even The Trooper for crying out loud)

I've been a IM fan for almost four decades now, and while I could care less if the release new material, I'd hate to see them stop touring. The later stuff is ok, the same old IM formula that you can rely on year after year, but the tours are where it's at for me in my old age. Nothing is better than kicking it at Pine Knob during the summer (Blossom Music Theater last year), and watching a kick ass IM show.

ReverendMediocre 2009-03-17 07:23:10 AM
Anyone who says that the new Maiden material is sticking to the old formula of the holy trinity of Maiden albums (Beast, Mind, Slave) is either an idiot with feet for ears or a troll. The new albums are very, very prog-rock. There was certainly progressive elements of their Golden-age albums, but there is hardly even a trademark Maiden minor-third harmonized riff to be found on Brave New World, Dance Of Death, or A Matter Of Life And Death.. they are fresh new works from a band that is yes, old.. but can still rock the old material like they were 20 and write complex new material for mature ears.

Or, in simpler terms, Up The Irons.

I don't know why people talk shiat on bands who keep playing into old age. I saw the Stones a couple years ago and they kicked ass. I saw Dick Dale ten years ago on his 60th birthday tour and he shredded my face. Just because they're not releasing new material on par with their greatest works of the past doesn't mean the live show won't be great.

Ewww, their old and stuff! Yuck, I wanna see Good Charlotte or Blink 182!

I get that all the time from people who know me, and everyone who knows me knows that I love Maiden, especially new Maiden. Now if they were continually touring without putting out new good material, then you might have a point, like Poison or Styx. But Maiden keep coming with the good stuff. I would like to mention here that I cannot stand Jannick Gers. I am embaressed when I see them live with him. What a wankfest!

Paschendale is my favorite Maiden song.

The thing is, the Stones haven't released a great album since Tatoo You. Maiden's last three albums are as good or better than most of their older stuff, and on par with (but different than) the unholy trinity of the 80's. And Bruce Dickinson on stage makes Mick Jagger look like a lazy slacker -- And I'm not dissing Jagger's showmanship.

The Rock in Rio DVD on my big-screen with my surround sound system is a fantastic experience. The performance of Sign of the Cross brings tears to my eyes.

Iron Maiden absolutely rules - A Matter of Life and Death is a great album with some amazing material that shames modern metal bands.

Can't wait to see the documentary when it comes out!

Oh, when I saw IM at Merriweather last year, someone at the soundboard inadvertently pushed a button during "Number of the Beast" and Bruce Dickinson was singing when he wasn't singing. He was visibly surprised. Best case scenario they had a reference vocal track for soundchecking so Bruce didn't have to be there, worse case..well..you know.

Nothing wrong with the music they make today. The music scene has just changed...that's all.

It absolutely poured! Pretty severe lightning and thunder too. I'm really surprised they didn't call the show. It had slowed by the time they did Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner and helped give it an even more eerie effect. Luckily my six year old son handled the storm like a "Trooper."

That's funny - I was at that show and don't remember that.

I think it's great news that they'll keep making new albums after the upcoming #15. As others have stated, A Matter of Life and Death is indeed a great album. There's no denying that they're the one of the best live bands out there and their playing is as good as it ever was.

Fearofablankplanet, I have since come around to appreciating Janick's ability. His contributions to AMOLAD (especially The Legacy...holy crap) are excellent and when I saw him at that excellent Merriwhether show last year, he had really toned down the "clown" act. His guitar playing was really, really good.

The Matter of Life and Death tour, where they played the entire new record in order, po'd a lot of folks who showed up just wanting to hear "the hits," but I thought it showed actual interest on IM's part. They were great.
/saw them on the hits tour that followed, too
//also great

as long as they can think up more bass intros I'm sure they'll continue putting albums of them out.

When I first heard "Number Of The Beast" on the radio, I immediately ran out and shoplifted the cassette tape. Wore that out, and got it on LP. Now it's in my CD collection, next to Piece of Mind, Powerslave, and Somewhere in Time.

My sons, both around 20 y.o., would rather listen to Maiden than today's music. The older one chose "Flash Of The Blade" as his personal anthem.

"Aces High" is my choice of music on the way to work in rush hour traffic.

I've been sort of so-so on classic Maiden, but they inspired a lot of my favorite bands. So I'm going to have to investigate these newer albums that you're talking about.

swaxhog 2009-03-18 09:01:25 AM
There's too much money to be made. I'm sure they were robbed pretty good by their managers while touring. These days they would have much greater control over the finances and see just how much money is flowing in. It's hard to turn off a tap when millions are flowing in.

puddleonfire 2009-03-18 05:18:41 PM
As long as they don't make the same mistake as the Scorpions made....
Making an album right after coming off tour.

"Crazy World."
