I don't think the author even knows what the word "controversial" means.

What "controversy" did Sid Vicious, or Amy Winehouse spark?

Stay Cool Babylon 2009-03-16 06:41:57 PM
What, no Barry Manilow? Article is worthless.

Seriously though, the Sex Pistols were a boy band. They were picked and groomed like any other boy band, except 'punk' gave it an air of legitimacy.

johnny_vegas [TotalFark] 2009-03-16 06:45:51 PM
to be MOST controverial, I imagine you should have some amount of name recognition from other than the self-styled musical illuminati.

He can laugh all he wants, seeing as how Cooper had Love It To Death out seven years before Biafra has even thought of joining The Dead Kennedys. Seeing as how Cooper (the man and the band) had 11 albums out and were making parents shiat themselves with the stage shows long before The Dead Kennedys came around, Biafra owes the Godfather of Punk some props.

TommyymmoT [TotalFark] 2009-03-16 06:59:27 PM
He's confusing "controversial", with "sensationalist".

1. Sid Vicious
2. Ozzy Osbourne
3. Keith Richards
4. Amy Winehouse
5. Michael Jackson
6. Marilyn Manson
7. Pete Doherty
8. Britney Spears
9. Courtney Love
10. Madonna

These are little more than fascinating train wrecks.

Actually, The Beatles sparked more "controversy", than all of them combined.

And what of Frank Zappa, The Stones, Lou Reed, G.G. Allin, Jerry Lee Lewis, or even Sinead O'conner for that matter?

DeCypher44 [TotalFark] 2009-03-16 07:07:45 PM
I would say Ozzy.

Alice Cooper is the cheesiest "rock star" of all time, and not all that controversial even back in the 70s. An electric chair on stage! How frightening and controversial!

Please...

No

Some Bass Playing Guy [TotalFark] 2009-03-16 07:18:58 PM
Elvis Presley was pretty controversial in his day.

It's just another list that seems to have forgotten that there was music made before some arbitrary dividing line.

galactus5000 2009-03-16 07:20:34 PM
I'll second Yoko.

And, hell, where is Elvis? Where is Jerry Lee Lewis? The (rest of the) Stones?

And, as stated above - Barry Manilow is more controversial than the trainwrecks listed. Hell, Madonna is only on that list because she's a freaking mediawhore tryhard.

Roblmw241 2009-03-16 07:25:00 PM

My hero. Jello not you, sorry. I dont agree with what he has to say all the time but I love that he says it. By far my favorite front man of all time. I love every project he is a part of.

How about Zappa? I am not sure but he said some racy stuff and I remember seeing that clip of him on Meet the Press.

MisterLoki 2009-03-16 07:36:34 PM
Wasn't their a Scandinavian death metal band that made stew out of their singer's brain after he had blown his head off, or something? Because that would be pretty controversial.

Eventually, rumors surfaced that Euronymous made a stew with pieces of Dead's brain, and made necklaces with fragments of Dead's skull. The band later stated that the former rumor was false, but the latter was true.[7] Additionally, Euronymous claimed to have given these necklaces to musicians he deemed worthy.

Mayhem (new window)

GungFu 2009-03-16 07:45:52 PM
I dunno, chaps.

Being charged with the murder of your g/f and then ODing is pretty controversial, given that people think he's innocent, and some think him guilty to this day.

GG Allin comes close, but he never did kill himself on stage though, did he? I can't say he was ever a 'rock star' either.

Speaking of the KLF. Here's another missed nominee:
Controversial cos he's a convicted pedo and yet still gets royalties from adverts and plays in US sports arenas.

I'd like to know how he is considered a 'Rock Star' though?

Bill Haley was controversial in his day. So was Elvis. And Jerry Lee Lewis - the one who married his cousin.

GG Allin, performance artist.

Good call.

I'd also add Genesis P. Orridge. He (um, well, whatever he is now)was kicked out of England supposedly for some videos Pedobear would be interested in. Also the "performance art" he did was on GG Allin's level. His "Coum Transmission" period. Then there's that whole Throbbing Gristle thing.

Side notes include Zoviet France. They specialized in mayhem and confusion. Personal favorite of mine.

Skinny Puppy were pretty controversial in their day, with their onstage videos showing inhumane animal torture and Ogre "killing" a fake dog onstage.

Even Reznor got into a little fuss with that video he did with that masochist whose name I forget.

There was the whole thing about Current 93, Sol Invictus, Coil, Death In June controversy where they were all claimed to be gay Nazis intent on destroying our nations' children.

Glitchwerks 2009-03-16 08:17:57 PM
Erm, none of those are rock stars though. They were just pretty controversial.

Elvis? (for his hips while young, and his weight/diet when old)

And gotta give some credit to WASP and the other filthy fifteen for pushing Tipper Gore over the edge and making everyone put warning labels all over everything:

Controversial? Try Desecration. When they attempted to release their first album, Gore and Perversion, police deemed it to offensive, confiscated and destroyed almost all copies of it, including the masters, and arrested the band members and threw them in jail.

One of them had to take his case to the US Supreme Court to protect free speech.

One of them wore a snake and eyeliner.

You lose.
