Say what you like about these morbid mo-fo's... they're huge in their hometown. They pack stadiums (there and only there)!

;)

The new album is SICK. Like the good kind of sick.

I like the Decemberists, and await their new album with glee.

I really like their debut,
I've heard parts of "Picaresque" [mostly on amazon clip and youtube] and what i heard was really great.... i have to get that album one of these days [stupid future shop $20 my ass]
I like "the crane wife"... even though there's so many different styles, it flows very well ... one or two not good songs though ["summer song" seems like it was written and thrown onto it in 5 minutes]

oh and i'm sure the rest of you guys/gals know this, but there's a song on "picaresque" [spelling? sorry] that sounds very very similar to "losing my religion" by R.E.M. I looked up the chords to both songs, and the Decemeberists song it the exact opposite chord progression [same two chords, just switched] in the verses, that's what makes it sound so similar, oh and the strings. and the tempo.
if satriani can get pissed at Coldplay for similarness,
i wonder why R.E.M. didn't @ decemberists?
oh wait. maybe because they a) don't care b) aren't douchebags.
nvm.

p.s. do any of you know if some of those songs released on those EP's are going to be on the album? or were those totally seperate?

Chord progressions aren't protected. I believe you missed that as a possible choice.

/off to listen to said song

Now having listened, I see the vague similarity and also the lack of any melodic sameness.

I like it, nonetheless. Now I can't say that I've never heard a Decemberists' song.

The Beatles and Jethro Tull have a much bigger case than REM.

The article missed the Holocaust in Odalisque. That's worth one or two deaths, right?

I take it that the only two bands Farkers are allowed to like are The Decemberists and Super Furry Animals. Which i'm totally alright with because both bands are awesome.

Wait until you see a Duran Duran thread.

Say what you want Colin Meloy is one of the most literate songwriters working right now (maybe at times self indulgently so).

The new album is awesome from beginning to end. The song about killing kids is probably the best.

I must've heard it ten times before I listened close enough to realize what it was about.

Sometimes I have to pull out the dictionary when listening to Decemberists. I hadn't ever heard the story of Vavilov either.

I say your uncle was crooked french canadian! And he was gutshot running gin! Oh, how his guts were all suspended in his fingers, and how he held them, how he held them, held them in.

Oh and I'm fairly certain that the cannibal deaths in "16 Military Wives" are metaphoric, not literal.

/unlike the five soldiers, that's literal.

Either that's the first decemberist song that isn't 100% literal or you're very dumb.

MikeyistheDevil 2009-03-17 07:12:26 PM
I was waiting for my autographed copy to arrive in the mail today, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Seriously though, the cannibalism deaths (as previously mentioned)...totally figurative.
