Irish punk music is a smidgen above Christian ska in terms of music genres.

A friend got me into Flogging Molly. I feel like I need to dance around like a maniac with a beer in my hand when listening to it.

Mong.
Haven't heard that word in a VERY long time.
Thank you so much for that.

/Used to use it as a verb.

I'm considering starting an Irish punk band, if I could only think of a good name...

Dropkick Murphys? I'll take a big f**kin' pass.

I'd rather listen to smooth jazz.

Just incorporate something that revolves around consuming alcohol in large amounts, and slap a shamrock on your band logo.

"They're technically Scotch-Canadian, not Irish at all-but after a few rounds of whiskey, who can tell the difference?"

A: My Scottish grandfather, who explained to me when I was about 8 why he would strongly prefer that I not wear green on St. Patrick's Day (orange would be okay, as he had Irish protestants in his ancestry).

I like Pogues but most 'Irish Punk' bands annoy me. They're incredibly cliche. OI I LIKE TO DRINK AND FIGHT!

I went to a Pogues concert in Chicago and The Tossers were handing out free samples of their music. I took one listen to about :30 of the first song and threw the CD away. Terrible.

Weigard 2009-03-16 03:11:14 PM
Easy, Dropkick Murphys like shiatty baseball teams.

I bought a New Dubliners cd once.
It sounded exactly like Dave Matthews, so I threw it away.

I'm very plesed with the inclusion of Flatfoot 56. I met the guys several times, and they're real down to earth.

Scotland was just as Catholic as Ireland until the English forced them out. And too, the Scottish Protestants got along just fine with the Irish Catholics in Ireland. It wasn't until the discriminatory English laws and governance that they were driven apart.
I don't know your grandfather's reasoning, but supporting the orange because your Scottish wouldn't be accurate.

Rulers using religious "differences" to incite hatred among the commoners to their own ends: oldest trick in the book.

/Didn't know about the "orange" thing until the Simpsons' "St. Patty's Day" episode

The best way to enjoy celtic punk is with a beer in each hand, in a moshpit, punching skinheads in the face.

Real McKenzies were at the only punk show I've ever been to, at the Whiskey Jar no less.

They were crazy, and a lot of fun. Easily the best band of the bunch, which were: The Mad Caddies (the band the people I was with wanted to see), Rise Against (second best in my opinion, have to support the hometown band!), and The Real McKenzies.

Just want to mention the Saw Doctors, even though they're not very punk.

(Although they did play a bit of "Blitzkrieg Bop" in the middle of "Hay Wrap" during their show in NYC this past Friday night.)

ToddMU03 2009-03-16 04:34:19 PM
I saw the Murphys in Wisconsin a few weeks ago and Flogging Molly this past weekend. Both were great shows.

I liked the 'Do or Die' album. Havent heard anything else by DM, anything by FM, or any of those other bands. I likes me some punk and am 100% Irish so I guess Ill check them out.

I listened to that band you like but it sucked so I defecated on the CD and threw it out.

Leaving work right now and heading to the Flogging Molly show in Chicago. Friggin sweet.

Speakers 2009-03-16 05:51:03 PM
Why are the Street Dogs on this list? As far as I know the only connection they have with "celtic punk" is that their lead singer was once in the Dropkick Murphys. Although I haven't listened to their most recent cd, so I guess that could have some kind of celtic influence.

Haven't seen Flogging Molly live in about two years. I guess I'm overdue. (Next time will be #7)

I guess they're doing well enough financially, seeing as they can afford to buy homes (in some cases, multiple) now.

Exactly my point, Ireland is a classic divide and (almost) conquer scenario. Allowing ourselves play into their schemes just gives them more power and control.

Came here to give props to Flatfoot 56 and was beaten to the punch, awesome!!! They've not quite hit the big time yet but their day will come!!

Did someone try to dis Christian Ska too? OC Supertones one of the greatest bands of the last 20 years as well IMO.
