I don't know about anyone else, but if someone tells me 'you can say [insert term here], you'll offend people' then I have an almost overwhelming urge to use said offensive term for the rest of the day.

You *do* realize that your name is now considered offensive, yes?

The booklet also admits that "no gender-neutral term has been successfully proposed" to replace 'waiter' and 'waitress', allowing parliamentarians to use these words in a restaurant or café.

Say What?
Here in America restaurants use the term server as a gender neutral term to describe both male and female waitstaff.

Chairman Obama told business leaders, "I don't like the idea of spending more government money, nor am I interested in expanding government's role."

how can he stand his own lying. We all know NOBODY, left or right, believed that statement. Is there a leftie who thinks that statement by Obama is true?

Every authority that can write rules invariably comes up with a few funny ones. Some are even original.

The headline is a wee-bit misleading though. The guidance is for MEPs only, and with them getting close to a mil a year of tax-free cash from the EU taxpayers, I can see how they are imagining themselves some kind of new nobility, and feel the urge for a more "dignified" language.

Me too.

90% of this PC stuff is only for retards who read waaaaay to far into things.

For example, when I write a generic report about something, using the pronoun 'he', I don't see why that has to be interpreted as "females excluded." There isn't a gender neutral pronoun to use and using 'he or she' is cumbersome.

Words like "waitress" or "hostess" are gender-biased, but are they really offensive? They don't mean anything, they are simply the names of certain professions. There's no reason why those terms should be offensive and if you see sexism in that, you are looking too hard for it.

From my experience it is calling them 'Mr' that offends them, not 'Miss' or 'Mrs'.

Howabout people stop being less offended all the time and we start working on real problems like war, hunger, disease, homelessness and poverty?

Last I checked, a 500-lb bomb didn't stop to check if it called you Ma'am or Sir before it blew your village to smithereens; and AIDS seems to kill you regardless of whether you refer to women as equals or "weapons-grade cumbuckets." (Kudos to whomever came up with that term)

I mean, really, people, what the f*ck is wrong with you dumbasses?

True, but TFA said they aren't supposed to use "Senorita". Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you always supposed to use Senorita because Senora implies she's old??

Because its easier to enact some horseshait PC nonsense than to work on the real problems. I'd say this pretty much typifies the level of competence that we can expect in just about any legislative body anywhere in the world.

ArthGuinness 2009-03-15 10:03:25 PM
If I made my 2 cents, I think we should mostly be looking at people's intent.

When my grandmother called black people negroes or people of color, that was what she learned as a kid and it was a hard habit to break. She was simply describing someone, not insulting.

On the other hand, you've got people like Ann Coulter who calls all Arabic people Camel Jockeys. Everybody knows full well that his intent is to insult people in a bigoted way.

There's a difference.

So maybe if these persons get offended by simple traditional forms of respectful address they are too farking petty and sensitive to be trusted with the responsibility that they have?

Not their fault though, unless they are in fact biatching about it. It could be that Harold is a blithering idiot and the women are making fun of him as much as we are.
