Unfortunately this and the tax for medium/large businesses that don't offer health plans are the only correlated revenue streams I can think of. It's a shame, because even if you are covered it's still quite expensive if there's anything wrong with you at all.

It's a tough decision, but the right one. I think he was wrong to condemn the tax before, though right in condemning the health care credit. I hope he's man enough to swallow his words and make a difficult but correct choice. I'm pretty sure he is.

"So far, administration officials have been careful not to endorse the idea, which Obama blasted as a major tax increase last year after Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) made it the centerpiece of his presidential campaign's health plan. But the president hasn't slammed the door on it, either.

This week, White House budget director Peter Orszag said taxing employer benefits was among several ideas that "most firmly should remain on the table." White House economic adviser Jason Furman called for an end to the so-called "employer exclusion" before he joined the administration. Meanwhile, some congressional Democrats say the White House has signaled that Obama would accept a tax on employer benefits as long as he didn't have to propose it himself.

Why not just wait the 4 months until a plan for universal healthcare coverage is passed through the legislature and biatch when he signs it then? It seems silly to knock him for something that has been proposed by someone else when the White House has said nothing about the plan one way or the other.

If it ends up being part of a plan that gets widespread congressional support...then Obama will more than likely sign it.

Just makes people seem like tards biatching about it before anything happens.

So something that someone has said that someone else might do if they do it first is the same as saying "I will do it?" Your view of reality is so twisted, it is actually sprained. You will bend over backwards as long as you can even get close to making a Democrat look bad and will work just as hard to put anything a Repub does in a good light. Try doing something useful for a change instead of throwing bricks from your glass house.

Fizpez [TotalFark] 2009-03-15 01:05:15 PM
So, if I am reading this right:

Your employer provides health care - the company or more likely, the employee will be taxed on the "Value" of this health care - so the government can take the money and give health care to someone else.

Seriously, did I miss something?

So in effect, if your job HAS health care you lose some income, if your job doesnt have health care you will gain health care, supposedly funded by taxing the health care of non-gov't provided health care.

I may be wrong but if I wanted to essentially force companies to stop offering health care and force everyone onto gov't health care this would be a the way to do it. A company not offering benefits like health care could offer a high hourly salary - and its employees would still be covered - being now at an economic disadvantage the company which originally offered health care says "fark it" raises its hourly and drops health care. Very soon few companies offer private health care insurance and the tax dries up, forcing the gov't to go fishing elsewhere for the money. Of course private health care is all but gone now - so we are all together, under the gov't umbrella. Nice.

One thing i really like about Obama is that he keeps his mind open and never believes he has the all knowing answer. there is always a healthy amount of doubt. i wish bush had had the same. bush, for a while, had all the answers and was unwilling to budge/change his mind. i guess because God told him.

And your point is...?

Politics necessarily involves compromise, and the structure of American government dictates that the President doesn't always get his way and Congress sometimes plays a role in setting policy (to Dick Cheney's eternal torment). To say that the White House would accept the plan if it were passed by Congress is not at all the same thing as saying that Obama personally supports the plan, or even thinks it's an especially good idea - just that it's not important enough to justify spending political capital fighting against it.

helix400 2009-03-15 01:14:48 PM
Fizpez: I may be wrong but if I wanted to essentially force companies to stop offering health care and force everyone onto gov't health care this would be a the way to do it.

I'm a fan of taxing it for two reasons:

1) I want people to realize they are getting raises, but that their raises are getting eaten by massive health care costs. Take health care off pre-tax benefits that nobody reads, and put it into their paycheck, then ask the employee to hand back a certain amount for health care. Perhaps this outrage over their money disappearing will help force change sooner.

2) Employer based plans are almost as bad as government sponsored plans. It removes the consumer from the product, and encourages an entitlement society where personal responsibility suffers. If you have a nice employer sponsored health care plan, you go get procedures done not caring how much it actually costs. There's no incentive for the consumer to shop around and no incentive for the provider to offer cheap prices. Get people off employer plans and start forcing them to make their own decisions.

It seems Congressional Democrats (and Obama behind the scenes), want a different reason

3) Tax those making money and getting employer health care, and give it to those who aren't.

from TFA you failed to mention.

"Everybody's got to share together in the solution. And this might be one component to sharing," Baucus said in an interview. But "it's early," he said. All the tax proposals will be analyzed before his committee tackles the funding question in May.

Pure speculation rather than a definitive answer.
