Testament pretty much farking rocks. Good call, subby.

BigSnatch [TotalFark] 2009-03-15 12:16:43 PM
When I saw these guys in July, they just looked awkward entering the stage. Chuck Billy is huge now and Skolnick just looked like he really didn't belong there.

Then they rocked the walls off the venue. I'm happy to see them get a green.

Anyway, I am going to recommend some Irish bands in honor of Saint Patrick's day:

Cruachan - Death of a Gael (new window)

Waylander - Born to the Fight (new window)

Primordial - As Rome Burns (new window)

That was decent, although I've never really been a fan of Testament. It also reminded me of Metallica.

/I saw that it was 1:00, and we had no SHMHC, so I just submited Acid Bath (new window).

Here's another one:
Thin Lizzy - Emerald

Testament is one of my favorite old-school thrash bands, some metal heads dont give them the same props as the bigger groups, but they had a few great albums.. 90's output not so much but the 80's stuff rocks. The live album they put out a couple years ago is great too.

Sherjo311 2009-03-15 02:39:36 PM
never heard testament before, only heard of them. it was ok. but they're on nuclear blast records europe? they have some of the most original sounding bands on the label and subby chose testament? hmm...

i grabbed these from the same youtube profile -

Scar Symmetry - Morphogenesis (new window)

Darkane - Innocence Gone (new window)

Soilwork - As We Speak (new window)

Hey SPna15 I'm seriously digging Mirrorthrone and Windir (though Arntor is definately their best album that I've heard so far) thanks for the suggestions.

Sherjo311 2009-03-15 02:44:26 PM
also, this one made me laugh quite a bit!

Meshuggah - New Millenium Cyanide Christ (new window)

your welcome, and thanks for the Summoning advice. I'm liking Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame.

/You may like Arcas. Instrumental prog, celtic... I'm not sure how to classify them. But you can get their album for free of their Myspace.

satanicsantoku: thrash rules, and the throwback thrash thing going on right now is kinda cool, but unhealthily widespread... blame it on Municipal Waste.

Municipal Waste - Sadistic Magician. note dave witte drumming.

Sacred Reich - Surf Nicaragua

check out Bones Brigade and this canadian outfit DFA (not the dance collective or whatever the hell they are) that's been reincarnated as Poser Disposer, total wasteoid skate thrash...

I like thrash but it almost all sounds the same to me, of course most 'mono-genre' bands do. Good to hear thrash isn't dead though.

Got-damn that singer is a fat fark now!

Testament was absolutely amazing back in the 80's.. especially when this style of music was new. Go back and listen to their first couple of albums, and it is just awesome.

I don't think they've lost any of that, however some of it is masked a little bit by how much better, technically, they are now, than they were when they were kids. They recently re-recorded a bunch of songs off their first two albums, and I don't like them anywhere near as much as the actual songs from the first two albums ..

Testament kicks ass!

Same here. I didn't know what to expect, and Chuck Billy's appearance made me think we were in for a round of cookie monster nonsense. But they really cranked it up and were pretty good, except for lackluster sound.

Kinda weird seeing Skolnick without a tuxedo though :)

Some people say Chuck Billy got fat due to effects of the chemo-therapy. I'm no expert on that field, so I wouldn't know, point is..he rules.

Good call on this one. The new Testament kicks massive amounts of ass. It's easily better than Death Magnetic, and yet that one got all the accolades in the press. If only the press really paid attention instead of drooling over Metallica.

/Testament is probably my third favorite thrash band, behind Kreator and Megadeth.

Am I the only one who thought the new album was awful? I listened to it once then threw it on the pile, where it remains. I guess it's kinda hard to top The Gathering though.

A song about 9/11? Seriously?

Tomas Haake is hands down one of the best drummers in Metal. Who else is gonna use hi-hat and ride in 4/4 + snare and double bass in 23/16

Complex Polyrhythms and rotating time signatures FTW!

Bleed (new window)is a better song and video though.

justoneznot 2009-03-15 08:47:01 PM
I actually prefer newer testament (90s+). I downloaded some stuff from the 80s and while it sounded like good metal, it was pretty boring. Not enough hooks.

to be honest, bleed is what turned me on to them (via SHMHC a month or so ago, no less) but what i've really been impressed with is Future Breed Machine and Stengah (new window). The albums both those tracks start off from have been seeing consistent rotation in my playlist lately.

Ya know, I hate to be That Guy but all this obscure shiat is losing people. I mean, "Viking metal"? how bout some Priest next week, or sabbath, or even something recent, yet more mainstream?

THIS

Testament is anything but obscure for metalheads. I'm not saying "real" metalheads, but it's beyond me how a metalhead isn't familiar with Testament's work.

//love them or hate them

Meshuggah fans... do yourself a favor:

Textures - Millstone (new window)

Octopus from Chile (Myspace.. but thier whole 4 song EP is there.)

BrutalCellist's Future Breed Machine with stuffed dolls.

satanicsantoku thx for that Municipal Waste video. i listen to Art of Partying a bit... tight stuff. Dave Whitte's a monster. (Melt Banana!)
never liked DRI though... sorry.

SPna15: Hey Kliffoth, Tell me what you think of this song (new window).

Absolutely incredible. Thanks again. My iPod is getting a long needed injection of new stuff.

I've been downloading these albums because apart from Mirrorthrone it'd cost me $30 a disc to import the CDs. It kind of sucks because I like having the disc and giving the band my well-deserved money.

Madbassist1: Ya know, I hate to be That Guy but all this obscure shiat is losing people. I mean, "Viking metal"? how bout some Priest next week, or sabbath, or even something recent, yet more mainstream?

Why would we want to post a bunch of mainstream stuff everyone has heard already? The awesome thing about these threads if people are hearing new stuff. And Testament is NOT obscure!

We already had a Judas Priest SHMHC, we don't need another for a long time.

OMG Viking Metal? Yeah Viking Metal, Scandinavia is a hotbed for heavy metal. Vikings are part of their history, what's the problem?

satanicsantoku: oh, you must have missed the slipknot thread.

No he didn't he was there and said he liked it. Maybe that shines some perspective on things. Like SK all you want, fine, but don't come into a metal thread telling real metalheads what's what after praising Slipknot.

Who are we losing by the way? You? Don't let the door hit ya...

Check out emusic. I pay $20 a month for 75 songs. Depending on my mood, that's 8-11 albums a month. I still shell out for actual cd copies of must-have albums, but it's nice to be able to sample so much music so cheaply. It has greatly broadened my metal horizons. And it's legal.

That Thurisaz album (thanks SPna15 - I'll be picking that one up) is on emusic, as well as tons of other shiat. Mostly small to mid-sized record labels. Imports don't cost any extra, either.

But enough about that.

I am looking all-goddamn-over for 'Misologie' but can't find it anywhere. However Unholy Matrimony is coming out with a new album in may. You can pre-order it from their US distributor here.

Hopefully they'll re-release the old ones too.

Madbassist1: or even something recent, yet more mainstream?

What do think Mastodon is? and Slipknot? and... hang on, let me check what we've had in the past few weeks... Megadeth? (not recent, but about as mainstream as you can get without being Metallica) Killswitch Engage (I feel dirty for typing that).

The only "obscure" band we've had in the past weeks has been Einherjer, and if you're into black metal at all, you'd have most likely run into them at least once.

do you wait for every sunday to come around and troll the SHMHC thread just to annoy us? every single time, all you do is complain about the submitted video.

if you don't like the selected song, be a sport and link to some songs you would suggest for the day. your opinions are becoming tiresome.
