There's a quantifiable neurological disorder that's specific to painters. about 40% of retired painters have it. Farked-up short term mrmory, restlessness, other problems.

If he had just discussed the part about his brain being fried from paint fumes, I would have passed him off as just another weirdo customer. The moment he mentioned "guns" it became a whole other kind of situation. To me it seems like he was trying to impress her by threatening to come in shooting up the place. or maybe scare her... who knows. whatever the case, weirdo becomes threat, and the police are called.

/gotta love the weirdos.....

See Children. This is why OSHA is a good thing. When they tell you to wear your respirators when painting in enclosed areas, it's not because they want you to feel stupid.

/This guy fried one too many brain cells with VOCs

FTFA: The employee reported the incident to the manager the day it happened, and she gave him a detailed description of the customer. But nothing was done at the time.

Now, that there's some good managering, Sparky. You're fired.

I work with autobody repair shops. The painters are always just a little off. Old painters are really screwy.

met a twenty something year old fellow on a job about ten years ago, and one day while shooting the bull he said he had sniffed alot of paint, in a later conversation he explained how he would "take care" of people that crossed him by booby trapping the vehicles with chemicals placed in their gas tanks to explode. i tried do always treat him extra nice after that. hi davey!- want some cookies?

Years ago I spent a summer working as a painter's assistant through Hire-A-Student. We were driving to a job site and he told me the story of the hire-a-student he'd hired the year before.

He dropped her off at the job site (the couple who owned the house were on vacation) with everything she needed and told her he'd be back in a couple hours. He came back and she was high as a kite. Dumb biatch had painted with the doors and windows closed.

Sounds like a case of "Please arrest me" to me. However, it reminds me of something that happened to me many years ago. I was in my teens and had taken the train into NYC for a Saturday art class at the Art Students' League. Afterwards I decided to go to the Frick, which is still one of my favorite museums in NY. I got there a little early and was hanging out in front waiting for the doors to open. There was a young guy, an artist, standing there and we started chatting. After a while he started telling me how he had been living on cigarettes and ice cream which had caused one of his teeth to dissolve and he hadn't been in his right mind once the "tooth dust" started circulating through his bloodstream. I started to edge away but just then the museum opened and I went in; he stayed outside, presumably to get better reception on the thoughts the CIA was beaming into his head.

I am a custom vehicle painting hobbyist using hazardous paints and i'm really getting a kick....

Most of the paints I use will kill off your braincells left and right if your not properly geared up, none too good for your kidneys either. But the uro clear-coats...whew buddy, thattl take your organs and grind em up for breakfast over time. I try to use water based paints as much as possible so I can stick to a simple breather mask instead of the full kit.

The water based paint like shiittake (yea not my fault, right?) but they a hellova lot less likely to kill me off.

I don't understand why this guy was suspicious. Kind of creepy, a little loopy from the long-term paint fumes, lacking the social awareness to know when to shut up, but he didn't act threatening or say anything threatening. Was it that he mentioned he had guns? Maybe since I live in Texas that's not a big deal to me, but can people not just SAY they own guns? Is that perceived as a threat now?

Well I own lots of knives and a surly cat. Consider all of yourselves threatened.

if there weren't many customers in the store making it an easy target, wouldn't that tell you that there wouldn't be much money in the store?

I'd prefer my painters fully geared up than making my car peel like a purple Neon.

/never seen a purple Neon with an intact paint job

Breathing auto paint is no joke. I wouldn't paint a car unless I was in a full space suit. I have seen guys, usually in shops run by foreign immigrants from Mexico or Asia, painting cars while only wearing paper dust masks.

Uhm what? And you clearcoat over the top, so unless your the worlds worst clearcoater, its not like it gets wet.

I just hate it because its horrible at detail work, but kills less brain cells than HoK.

To say one is waiting on an event as opposed to for, is common in Scotland, (at least in the lowlands), also common in the US south I believe.
I assume it came over with the Scots-Irish.
