A long time ago, there was a TV commercial being shown regularly for a doggie antidepressant (can't remember the name). The first few side effects mentioned in the fast-talking spiel were nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

I gave my dog a cookie - worked just fine.

Fawkes definitely prefers a set routine: up at 5:10, wet nose in dad's face, back to bed until dad's out of the shower and dressed, out to the barn for breakfast, then back in by 7:00 so he can get to the bedroom window to watch me and the kid leave for work/school. During the day, play with toys and patrol for bunnies, birds and squirrels. Inside after dinner, then to the dogbed at 10 sharp.

He is slightly compulsive, but he seems perfectly happy about it. Sirens vex him mightily, though; he howls very mournfully when he hears them.

Pets that are stressed out will do weird stuff like chewing their hair off, chewing on their paws, scratching themselves until they bleed....no really. It's not that funny if it's your animal doing it, but on the other hand, take your damn dog for a walk. Daily.

OCD occurs naturally in dogs. Cats just use catnip and get mellow.

Unlikely? Bullshiat. Dogs have neurons and psyches. They're prone to neurosis and psychosis like anything else so-equipped.

Saying this is unlikely is like suggesting dogs can't get liver cancer because they're dogs, or go blind because they're dogs. Dogs or not, defects creep up in equipment whether it's meat or metal.

Unlikely subby? My friend has tried all sorts of meds for her dog. He's a great dog but he is so neurotic he has broken ALL of his teeth doing serious damage to door frames and the like. He LOSES IT in thunderstorms or if someone is setting of fireworks. Poor guy.

Years ago I had an absolutely bat-shiat crazy cat that cleaned herself so much she started licking off all her hair. And when she got rid of all that pesky hair, she started licking off all her skin. She looked terrible. I spent a bloody fortune at various vets to have them all tell me she was neurotic and needed kitty Prozac. She was fine once she went on her little-personality-pill and ended up living a long and fruitful life.

I have never owned another cat since her, however, because I am convinced that cats are all crazy.

The basics: Get off your lazy asses and exercise your dogs!! If I kept my blue heeler cattledog in an apartment all day, only let him outside to do his business, and once in awhile walked him around the block, he'd eat a whole thru my mattress, and a door. (which is what a friend got to experience with the brother of my dog)

Dogs need to run. Play. Explore. Expend energy. They get bored, and when they get bored, you get bad habits and weird OCD cases.

sorry, dog whisperer watcher here and this is actually true. dogs that have been bred as work animals can become psychologically distressed when not able to do their "jobs" or get suffucuent exercise.

Kid crying because he doesn't like school? All kids don't like school, who cares! Yeah, OK, he's locked himself in his room for three days and goes into a panic attack at the sound of the bus, but he's a kid! They do that!

Tired all the time? Stressed at work? Everybody is, stop whining, that's life!

What about being so tired you literally forget how to type your name, or getting so stressed at the sound of a fax machine that you break into a sweat? Or for dogs, chewing on their legs until they bleed, or chasing its tail with 10 times the frequency of other dogs, to the point that it's in danger of repetitive stress injury?

I was looking for that photo before I just posted the transcript from SNL. Nice.

You can actually train a dog not to freak out over fireworks, thunder, and gun shot. Takes a bit of dedication to put the dog in the situation to start training, but it's possible.
My previous heeler was the same way. Went MIA on a 600 acre ranch after 12 on New Years Eve... but with work, I was able to cease the "flight" tendencies.

The psychological needs of a dog are relatively simple. They need to have physical activity and mental stimulation (outside play and inside toys, especially the ones that make them think), and they need to know their role in the pack with you as the alpha.

If you are having a hard time fulfilling those needs for your dog, I recommend getting a nice fern instead. All they need is water.

Raised bad as a pup then My oldest dog we went out in thunderstorms, we drove around in cars, hell even exposed her to my brothers idiot family. Its called exposure - early. Saves you a lifetime of headaches.

/does have a problem with fireworks - but thats just because someone farking kid threw an M80 at her when she was one.

Personally I feel if anyone can't raise a fern, then successfully move up to a dog, then they shouldn't be allowed to have kids.

I have a dog that will take her stainless steel food bowl to catch a beam of sunlight to shine on the wall so she can chase it.

I can't decide if she's exceptionally smart...

I agree with all of that but my friend's dog got a bit of a rough start in life. Messed him up.

I have to give my pup Valium for her occasional seizures. She's so miserable. I hate that she has to take the pills that I force down her throat. I can tell when the pills are taking effect. Her eyes widen and her head turns to the side. She doesn't want me out of her site. The worse part, if I make any sudden movements, she freezes then falls over to one side. God love her.

My Dobe mix is totally OCD. She chases shadows and reflections and just loves her some laser pointer. Its fun for her. She just runs around the back yard chasing bird shadows and bug shadows. It gets a bit annoying when she's in the house and the suns shining in and happens to catch on a glass or something because she will run straight up the wall to chase it. Its also dangerous at night if she's near a road because Ive caught her about to run after car lights. She's f'n nuts. When she had surgery they gave me doggie downers because she needed to take it easy. Well they didnt work. She was in the backyard trying to chase shadows all loopy and messed up and ran right in to the pole of the swing set.

I also had a cat that would lick around his nipples so much that he would lick all the hair off. He had a fat belly and with the exposed nipples, well, people would always ask me when the kittens were due.

Thats exactly what mine did until she put 2 and 2 together and started making her own reflections to chase.

And i have a cat that does the EXACT same thing with her nipples.

i think if we got her a disco ball we'd have a pretty good chance of getting her head to explode...

Chews her front nails. Not neurotic or anything, seems to do it just out of boredom. When she's done playing with any variety of toys, nail biting is the next pasttime of choice. Also chases the laser pointer to the point of collapse if allowed to. She's quite adept at entertaining herself though, but much like wrayvynn, i'm never sure if she's brilliant, or just brilliantly stupid.

So your dog behaves like a dog?

Most dogs will lose it during thunderstorms and fireworks buddy. Satellites and jets are launched all the time around here, and the dogs still freak out over violent noises like fireworks. Doesn't mean you need to drug them when they hear something they don't understand =)

That said, take care of your damn dog, and do not keep them locked up most of the time. If you don't have reasonable room to roam, do not get a dog. Get a cat and let it go outside.

If Benadryl is alleviating your dog's chewing, then your dog is allergic to something in their environment, which might be ragweed, dust, or those new doggie biscuits you're feeding her. It was the latter in my dog's case.

Sometimes you can't remove the allergen, like ragweed, but you ought to make sure that it's not her food or something that you can cure by changing brands, rather than feed her more meds. This goes for people too- if you're allergic to dust, you'd probably clean your house rather than take Benedryl every day.

My dog's vet prescribes Valium for pets who have "anxiety issues" as well as seizures. Guess I should have mentioned that prior. Oops. Anyway... I'm sure the effects would be the same for any dog taking the pills.

For mine, it's plastic squeaky toys. There's a whole ritual involving hiding the toy, licking the toy, shaking the toy and eventually dismembering the toy. He's developed such an attraction to the red squeaky hammers that I actually have a standing order at our local dollar store.

My doegie needs puppy uppers. She's fat and lazy.

She had a terrible limp for a while. Vet said her hips where going. It was pretty sad. But we changed her dog food from Ol' Roy to something else and it completely cleared up. Do not feed your dog that shiat. It destroys their livers, among other things.

This is not really new; I have seen some severe cases of OCD in dogs... really heartbreaking stuff, it is not unlikely at all. I was unaware of using Zoloft as a treatment, I have seen success with Prozac though, I saw a dog that had to have a softball sized rock in it's mouth 24 hours a day, fail every possible treatment with the exception of a low dose of Prozac

I have a lab that's addicted to her Kong, but I seriously doubt that it's some new found dog OCD problem. The problem is that the breed has been genetically selected for thousands of years to want to bring back shiat to its master unharmed and drop it on the ground... then do it again (for ten hours). It's not a mental abnormality that retrievers to retrieve non-stop for days on end. It's what they want to do all the time because we bred them that way: it's genetic. I'd imagine the same is true of other "OCD" breeds.

It's not "human normal" that my lab cries when I put the toy away, but she can't do anything about it. Her DNA will allow nothing else, unless I overwrite her natural instincts with discipline.
